[This chapter is written in third's person pov]
Together, Wanqing and Anning walked deeper into the servants' quarters.
For Anning, the place was almost unrecognizable.
The paper walls had been burned to crisp, leaving behind black wooden friends that crumbled after a few seconds. The thick smoke in the air made it hard to breathe and see more than a few steps ahead of them.
"A-mei!" Anning shouted, pulling the cloth away from her mouth slightly. "Where are you?!"
The only sound she got in return was the crackling of above them. With each room they walked by, her heart pounded harder against her chest.
"A-mei!"
No response.
She had just taken one small step forward, when...
Crack!
The sound from something snapping came from above. Anning looked up as a burning wooden beam broke loose from the ceiling.
It was falling straight toward her. She was supposed to move, but her body wasn't even responding.
'God damnit! Fucking move, Anning?" She screamed inwardly.
