Chapter 45 - Chapter 45 : The Baron's Wife

Chapter 45 : The Baron's Wife

The bridge at River Crossing was finally complete.

Garrett stood at the center of the span, watching the first merchant caravan cross the structure that had taken six weeks to build. Solid timber, properly braced, capable of supporting loaded wagons through any weather. A connection point that would funnel trade through Cole Territory for years to come.

"Twelve percent toll on all goods passing through," Thomas reported, consulting his ledger. "Solomon's negotiated rates with six regular trading companies. Monthly income projections suggest we'll recoup construction costs within four months."

The mathematics of power, measured in wagon wheels and percentage points. Not dramatic. Not heroic. But essential.

Population had reached one hundred fifteen. The Vanguard numbered thirty-two fighters, with seven now approaching Clipper tier under Darian's relentless training. River Crossing's integration was complete—Harmon served as settlement administrator, his nephew Cal working triple shifts that had become double shifts as his debt neared paid. Vera's forge produced equipment that almost matched captured Clipper quality.

Fourteen weeks since crawling out of a grave. Four months of building, fighting, negotiating, surviving.

The Hollow—Cole Territory now—was becoming something real.

Solomon arrived three days later with news that had nothing to do with trade.

"Quinn's taking a second wife."

They sat in the trade office—a new structure, built to handle the increasing commercial activity that flowed through the settlement. Garrett poured drinks from a bottle of actual whiskey, a luxury that would have been unthinkable months ago.

"Jade," he said. Not a question.

Solomon's eyebrows rose.

"You've heard?"

"Rumors travel." The lie came easily. In truth, he remembered the show—the younger woman who'd caught Quinn's eye, the political complications that followed, the tragedy that eventually consumed them all. Canon events, approaching faster than he'd expected.

"More than rumors now. The wedding's been announced. Baron's celebration next month." Solomon's weathered face creased with something that might have been concern. "His first wife isn't taking it well."

"Lydia."

"You know a lot for someone living in the territories."

"I pay attention." Garrett set down his glass. "What's her situation?"

"Being quietly sidelined. Sent on diplomatic missions to territories Quinn barely cares about—trade negotiations, goodwill visits, the kind of assignments that keep her busy and far from home." Solomon's expression sharpened with the merchant's instinct for opportunity. "She's visiting this region next month. Officially checking trade route security. Unofficially..."

"Being humiliated with minor assignments."

"Exactly."

Garrett's mind raced through implications and possibilities.

Lydia. In the show, she'd been Quinn's stabilizing force—pragmatic where he was passionate, calculating where he was impulsive. When he'd grown obsessed with Jade and begun making increasingly erratic decisions, Lydia had tried to maintain order. Eventually, she'd become a power in her own right.

Or she would. If events unfolded as they should.

But this wasn't the show. This was reality, twisted by his presence, altered by decisions that rippled through the political landscape in ways he couldn't fully predict. Lydia's future was no longer certain.

Which meant it could be shaped.

"I want to meet her."

Solomon studied him with the careful assessment of someone who'd survived decades in the Badlands by reading people accurately.

"That's... ambitious."

"Is it impossible?"

"No. But it's complicated. Lydia's still Quinn's wife, whatever her current status. Meeting with an independent territory lord—especially one who's already arranged terms with Chau and the Widow—could be seen as political maneuvering."

"It is political maneuvering."

"At least you're honest about it." Solomon finished his drink and set the glass aside. "What exactly do you want from this meeting?"

"Connection. Information. The beginning of a relationship that might matter when circumstances change." Garrett met the merchant's gaze directly. "Quinn's dying. You know it, the other Barons know it, everyone with eyes can see it. When he falls, there'll be a power vacuum in his territory. Lydia could fill that vacuum—or she could be destroyed by it."

"And you want to position yourself to benefit either way."

"I want to position myself to benefit if she succeeds. And I want her to remember who reached out when others ignored her."

Solomon was quiet for a long moment, turning his empty glass in his hands.

"I can arrange an introduction. She'll be passing through the eastern trade routes next month—I can suggest that Cole Territory's new bridge is worth inspecting. A trade discussion. Nothing romantic, nothing political. Just business."

"That's all I'm asking."

"For now." Solomon stood, reaching for his coat. "I'll send word when I have confirmation. But Garrett—be careful with this one. Lydia's smart. Smarter than Quinn, smarter than most of the Barons I've met. If she thinks you're trying to manipulate her, she'll cut you off faster than you can blink."

"I'm not trying to manipulate her. I'm trying to help her—in ways that also help us."

"That's the same thing, from a certain angle."

"From a certain angle, everything's manipulation. The question is whether the outcome benefits both parties." Garrett rose and extended his hand. "Thank you, Solomon. For everything you've done."

The merchant shook, his grip firm and weathered.

"Thank me when this doesn't blow up in our faces."

Two weeks passed.

The Widow's war with Quinn intensified. Reports filtered through Solomon's network—battles won and lost, territories changing hands, the slow grinding advance that characterized Baron conflicts. Neither side was winning decisively, but Quinn's forces were being pushed back, his alliances fraying at the edges.

Cole Territory continued building. Population reached one hundred eighteen. The Vanguard completed training exercises that would have been impossible three months ago. Vera produced her tenth Clipper-quality sword, then her twentieth. The settlement's reputation spread through trader gossip and refugee word-of-mouth.

And then Solomon returned with Lydia's answer.

"She'll come. Two weeks hence, official trade inspection." He handed Garrett a sealed letter, the Quinn family crest pressed into the wax. "She was surprised someone in the territories knew proper diplomatic protocol."

Garrett broke the seal and read the brief, formal acceptance.

To Commander Garrett Cole of Cole Territory:

Your invitation to discuss trade arrangements is accepted. I shall arrive on the date specified with minimal escort, as befits an informal commercial visit.

I am curious to meet the man who has attracted such attention in so short a time.

Lady Lydia of Quinn Territory

Curious. That was promising. Curiosity meant interest, and interest could become alliance.

"Anything I should know before she arrives?" Garrett asked.

"She's sharper than she appears. Don't underestimate her because she's being sidelined—that's a temporary situation, and she knows it." Solomon paused at the door. "And whatever you do, don't mention Jade. Even obliquely. That wound's too fresh."

"Understood."

After Solomon left, Garrett read the letter again, committing its careful phrasing to memory.

The man who has attracted such attention in so short a time.

She was already evaluating him. Already calculating his potential usefulness or threat. The meeting would be a test—for both of them.

He set the letter aside and began planning.
