"Sir, please keep your voice down!"
Two doctors stepped out of the operating room, their faces etched with deep displeasure as they directed their irritation at Baishui.
"I'm sorry!"
Baishui finally snapped back to reality. He released his frantic grip on Garp's uniform, turning to offer the medical staff a hurried apology.
Garp had been right. The green light flashing above the door hadn't guaranteed Aki was safe; it could have just as easily meant she was in critical condition and beyond saving.
"How is she?"
The moment the lead surgeon responsible for Aki's treatment stepped out, Baishui surged forward, desperate for news.
But before he could even get an answer, the surgeon laid into him.
"You actually let a girl suffer such horrific injuries! If I weren't just a civilian with no fighting skills, I'd beat some sense into you myself right now!"
"Where were you when she was being attacked?!"
Baishui could only bow his head and take the vicious scolding. He had absolutely no excuse.
"Alright, that's enough. Tell the boy about Aki's condition first. Don't leave him hanging in suspense," Garp interjected from the sidelines, halting the doctor's tirade.
"Yes, Vice Admiral Garp!"
Deferring to the legendary Marine, the lead surgeon reined in her temper, though her tone remained clipped.
"Rest assured. After ten grueling hours in surgery, the girl is stable."
"However, due to the sheer severity of her injuries, she will likely remain in a coma for a few years before she wakes up."
"Really? She's alive?"
The news hit Baishui like a tidal wave. Unrestrained joy flooded his face as his hands shot out, gripping the surgeon's shoulders tightly. His entire body trembled with overwhelming relief.
Aki is safe.
It was the greatest news he had heard in his entire life. He never imagined he could worry about another person this much. So, this is what love feels like.
"Hmph. I managed to drag her back from death's door this time," the doctor scoffed, glaring at him. "But if this ever happens again, don't expect me to be so forgiving. Even with Vice Admiral Garp standing right here, I'll thrash you myself!"
The female surgeon stared at Baishui with undisguised contempt. As a woman herself, she harbored a deep disgust for men who completely failed to protect the women they claimed to care about. She knew exactly how pathetic a man who couldn't provide a sense of security truly was.
"Can I... go in and see her?" Baishui asked, rubbing his hands together nervously as he looked at her with pleading eyes.
"Go on," she sighed, waving him off like she was swatting a fly. "But mind yourself. Every movement needs to be incredibly gentle. Otherwise, don't blame me when I throw you out into the street."
She shot him one last warning glare before shooing him out of her sight.
Inside the ward, Baishui sat by the hospital bed.
He reached out to gently stroke Aki's cheek, and without warning, the tears he had been holding back finally fell.
They say a man does not shed tears lightly, but that is only because his heart hasn't truly been broken yet.
His touch was impossibly light—so delicate, as if he feared that even the slightest pressure would cause Aki to crumble into ash and drift away on the wind.
Thanks to the emergency surgery, her face no longer held that terrifying, deathly pallor. Instead, a faint flush of color had returned to her cheeks, carrying the fragile warmth of life.
"Rest now, Aki," Baishui whispered. "I won't let Raan get away with this. He dared to hurt you... I'll make him pay in blood."
At the mere mention of Raan's name, the aura surrounding Baishui spiked violently. The air in the room grew heavy and suffocating, the sheer pressure of his killing intent bleeding through the walls so intensely that even the surgeon waiting out in the hallway shivered.
"I have to go now, Aki."
"I'll come back to see you as soon as I'm done."
Baishui took one last, long look at her, searing the image of her peaceful, sleeping face into his memory.
Then, he turned and strode out of the hospital room.
A monstrous, earth-shattering wave of killing intent was boiling over inside his chest, demanding a release.
He was going out to kill a man.
