Under the surprised gazes of the others, Drogon set the cloth bundle on the table and unfolded it, revealing a pile of food, a wineskin, and a clay jug.
The moment Tyrion caught the scent drifting from the jug, he recognized it as strong liquor.
He preferred red wine and rarely let a cup leave his hand when at home. He had tasted spirits before, but he was certain he had never encountered anything like this. Even through the sealed lid, he could smell how potent the liquor was.
Watching Drogon skillfully arrange the food and drink, Tyrion couldn't help feeling uneasy.
Once everything was laid out, Drogon grabbed a piece of horse meat with his left wing and nudged the wineskin with his right.
The meaning was obvious:
Pour the drinks.
Picking up the wineskin, Tyrion immediately recognized the contents as fermented mare's milk. He rinsed a wine goblet with water and poured it half full.
When Drogon saw that Tyrion had only filled the cup halfway, he seemed annoyed. Pointing at the goblet with his wing, he tried to indicate something.
Tyrion looked at the cup and then at Drogon, completely confused.
"Drogon wants you to fill it," Shireen explained from the side. "When he drinks with me, he usually takes several big gulps at once. Half a cup isn't enough."
Although mare's milk wine was made from milk, it could still get a person drunk. Tyrion had already had several cups of red wine, so after a moment of hesitation, he filled the goblet to the brim.
Seeing Tyrion's uneasy expression, Drogon assumed he simply wasn't used to mare's milk wine.
Drogon wanted to say, I'll finish mine; you only need to drink half.
But since he couldn't speak, he picked up the goblet and used his wing to indicate a point halfway down the cup.
Shay, who had been closely observing Drogon, couldn't help asking:
"What does that mean?"
Seeing the astonishment on Tyrion and Shay's faces, Shireen smiled, remembering her own experiences with Drogon.
"He means he'll drink his entire cup, and you only need to drink half of yours."
Tyrion hadn't expected Drogon to be so perceptive.
Feeling slightly embarrassed, he picked up the goblet.
He wasn't afraid of getting drunk. At worst, he would drink another couple cups of mare's milk wine. He certainly wasn't going to lose face over such a thing.
Even if the drink had a strong animal smell, he'd tasted worse. Back when he'd visited the Wall with Jon Snow, he'd drunk the miserable brews made by the Night's Watch.
Raising his goblet, Tyrion clinked it against Drogon's and drained it in one go.
His expression didn't change.
Only then did Drogon realize he'd misunderstood.
After finishing the mare's milk wine, Drogon took a huge bite of horse meat. Noticing Tyrion wasn't eating much, he pointed toward the pile of meat with a wing, encouraging him to eat.
This time Tyrion understood.
He picked up a piece of horse meat and chewed thoughtfully.
After the sour taste of the mare's milk wine, the rich, smoky meat tasted surprisingly delicious.
The more he chewed, the better it became.
Tyrion found himself enjoying the sensation of eating large chunks of meat and drinking deeply.
He poured a little mare's milk wine into another cup and handed it to Shay.
She merely smelled it and recoiled from the pungent odor.
Pushing the cup away, she chose instead to nibble on a small piece of meat.
Tyrion didn't insist.
He filled both cups again, clinked glasses with Drogon, drank, and continued eating.
Seeing Tyrion gradually loosen up, Drogon felt satisfied.
This was how drinking should be.
What fun was it drinking alone?
Sharing drinks with a friend—even if that friend was a human dwarf—was far more enjoyable.
By the time the wineskin was empty, Drogon was only beginning to feel a buzz.
Tyrion, meanwhile, was already pleasantly tipsy.
Tossing aside the empty wineskin, Tyrion reached for the liquor jug.
The moment Shay saw his half-lidded eyes, she knew he was close to drunk.
Another few drinks and he'd likely be completely intoxicated.
Still, she knew better than to stop him.
If she interfered now, Tyrion would only get annoyed.
She glanced at Drogon.
The young dragon was still calmly stuffing meat into his mouth, showing no signs of drunkenness whatsoever.
She looked him up and down.
His body wasn't particularly large.
How could such a small creature possibly consume so much food and alcohol?
Tyrion removed the jug's lid.
A fierce wave of alcoholic vapor burst forth.
Even through his haze, Tyrion instinctively tilted his head away.
Shireen immediately scooted half a meter back.
Shay hurriedly moved farther from the table.
Though slightly drunk, Tyrion understood that this wasn't ordinary liquor.
His pouring hand hesitated.
Drogon knew exactly how powerful the liquor was.
Even the fiercest Dothraki khal wouldn't dare drink an entire wine goblet of it at once.
Only a fire dragon, whose very body contained living flames, could casually gulp down such spirits.
Drogon flew over and stopped Tyrion's hand.
Using his wing, he pointed to a level roughly one-third up the cup.
Only that much?
Tyrion immediately felt insulted.
"Half a cup was one thing. But only filling the bottom? What kind of joke is that?"
Determined to prove himself, he filled the goblet completely.
At worst, he'd simply get spectacularly drunk.
Seeing Tyrion pour himself a full glass, Drogon grinned.
Your choice. Don't blame me later.
Taking a few bites of meat, Drogon lifted his cup and clinked it against Tyrion's.
Then he tilted back his head.
Gulp. Gulp. Gulp.
The entire cup disappeared down his throat.
"Buuurp!"
A loud belch escaped him.
Alcohol fumes mixed with smoke and tiny sparks drifted from his mouth.
Shay jumped in fright.
Even Tyrion, drunk as he was, felt a chill run through him.
This stuff wasn't actually made for dragons, was it?
Will it burn my throat?
But he'd already poured the drink.
Backing down now wasn't an option.
Closing his eyes, he raised the goblet and took a large swallow.
"COUGH! COUGH!"
He barely managed to swallow part of it before violently spraying the remainder all over Shay.
Grabbing his throat, Tyrion doubled over and collapsed against Shay's stomach, coughing uncontrollably.
His face turned crimson.
The veins in his neck bulged.
"Water! Water!"
The moment he could speak, he desperately demanded water.
Ignoring her soaked clothes, Shay quickly poured a cup and handed it over.
Tyrion gulped down several mouthfuls.
Only then did the burning in his throat begin to ease.
His stomach, however, felt as though it were on fire.
Panting heavily, he hoped the cool air might somehow help.
Watching Tyrion's miserable state, Drogon's body trembled with laughter.
His mouth stretched into a huge grin.
The dragon looked positively delighted.
That's what you get for showing off.
Shireen watched Tyrion's frantic attempts to save himself and nearly burst out laughing.
Trying desperately to maintain her composure, she turned away and pretended to read her book.
After several more cups of water, Tyrion finally recovered enough to speak.
"This isn't liquor meant for humans!"
he gasped.
"It must have been specially brewed by the Queen for you, wasn't it?"
Even knowing Drogon couldn't answer, Tyrion couldn't stop himself from asking.
The moment he heard the question, Drogon started laughing again.
