"Bubble!" Roger opened the laboratory door and called the house-elf's name, unable to keep the excitement out of his voice. His hand still held the test tube, and the silver-blue liquid inside shone like captured moonlight.
"Little master, you finally succeeded! Bubble is so happy for you!" Bubble appeared almost instantly, staring at the dazzling potion with sparkling eyes. The little elf looked even more excited than Roger, as though the success belonged to the entire household.
"Roger, congratulations." Jessica came downstairs after hearing the noise, and her eyes widened when she saw the beautiful Blue Moon Essence in his hand. Disbelief crossed her face first, followed quickly by pure happiness for her son.
"Yes, Mum. I finally did it." Roger threw himself into Jessica's arms and hugged her tightly. He knew she had been frightened again and again by the explosions in the laboratory, and this success felt like an answer to all her silent worry.
"There's still one final step." Roger reluctantly let go and pointed toward the small medical rocking device beside the wall. "Bubble, move that rocking bed to the balcony."
The Blue Moon Essence was technically usable at this stage according to the formula. However, its absorption rate would be very low, reaching less than half its true effect. If it was shaken and allowed to ferment for six hours, the thick fluid would transform back into a smooth silver-blue liquid with far better potency.
"Yes, little master. Bubble will prepare it right away." Bubble carried over the rocking device and the test-tube rack, then followed Roger carefully toward the balcony. The house-elf's steps were light, but his expression was as solemn as if he were escorting a royal treasure.
Roger carefully took out the Blue Moon Essence. Under the bright moonlight, the silver-blue potion shone even more brilliantly, and faint specks of light seemed to drift inside it. He fixed the test tube into the cradle, allowing the gentle vortex-like motion to help the magic fuse properly, and after that, all he could do was wait.
There was one more problem, however. Someone had to watch Yuumi, because the little menace loved interfering with anything that looked shiny, fragile, or forbidden.
As Yuumi grew older, the kitten's magic became stronger by the day. She spent her time running, jumping, and flying around the house, never causing any major disaster but constantly stirring up small trouble. That made her both lovable and deeply annoying.
"Bubble, keep a close eye on her. Don't let Yuumi cause trouble." Roger looked toward the furry shadow lurking near the furniture and felt that the warning was very necessary.
"Don't worry, little master. Bubble will protect Blue Moon Essence with his life." Bubble patted his chest and promised with great seriousness.
"That won't be necessary." Roger glanced at him. "If you die, who will run errands for me?"
"Master is so kind!" Bubble was overjoyed by Roger's shameless exploitation. To a house-elf, having one's usefulness acknowledged by a master was already the most precious praise.
"All right, go rest. I'll watch Yuumi." Jessica gently pushed Roger away from the balcony, then sat down on the sofa and watched the rocking device with quiet focus.
She could easily replace the Muggle machine with a spell that shook the potion automatically. But Jessica knew that Azkaban's torment had nearly stalled her son's magical growth, and that the Blue Moon Essence before her could only provide a temporary way forward. It did not truly heal Roger's body, and his slow magical development would remain a major problem in the future.
That was why she had not stopped Roger from brewing the potion, nor had she told him he could use magic to simplify the process. Jessica hoped these Muggle tools might open a new path for him and allow him to walk farther as a wizard in his own way.
Jessica waved her wand and cast a repelling charm across the balcony. Yuumi, who had been preparing to pounce, was suddenly pushed back by an invisible force.
The kitten shook her head, then began lurking suspiciously outside the balcony. She scratched, bit, and pawed at the barrier, but no matter how hard she tried, she could not get through. Jessica smiled faintly and summoned a cold drink from the refrigerator.
It had been another exhausting week, but the result was good. Roger took a shower, collapsed onto his bed, and fell asleep almost as soon as his head touched the pillow.
He had originally planned to sleep for six hours and then get up to collect the Blue Moon Essence. Unfortunately, his body had very different ideas, and he did not wake when the time came.
"Ah, what time is it?" Roger rubbed his sleepy eyes and hurriedly jumped out of bed. His first thought was the potion, and panic chased away the last traces of sleep.
"Calm down, my dear young man. Look at your result." Jessica shook the test tube in her hand, and the silver-blue liquid inside shimmered with captivating light even in the daytime.
"Thank you, Mum. Let me see." Roger quickly got dressed and excitedly took the test tube from her. The liquid flowed smoothly in the glass, clean and bright, without the slightest trace of sediment.
"My magic is finally saved." Roger buried his face in Jessica's arms and stayed there for a long time without speaking. For him, this tiny bottle held more than potion; it held the hope that he could catch up with other young wizards.
"Son, although the side effects of Blue Moon Essence are mild, you still have to be careful." Jessica stroked his hair, her voice gentle but serious. "No potion that affects magic should ever be treated lightly."
"Yes, I know. It shouldn't be a big problem." Roger nodded, then carefully divided the Blue Moon Essence into smaller potion bottles.
Adult wizards could drink Blue Moon Essence directly. For beginner wizards, however, a sudden burst of magical power was too dangerous, so it was better to extend the treatment over thirty days.
After each use, the drinker would feel drowsy and hungry. The drowsiness helped sharpen the mind and strengthen magical perception, while food provided the nutrition needed to improve physical condition. Compared with the side effects of other potions, including baldness, uncontrolled hair growth, and worse, these consequences were practically negligible.
The silver-blue potion swayed in the glass bottle, giving off a mesmerising glow. Roger carefully opened it and let a single drop fall into his mouth.
At first, the Blue Moon Essence tasted cool and sweet, like a mouthful of clear spring water. Then a warm current rushed from his throat into his brain, and Roger suddenly felt light as a feather, as if his whole body were floating.
The scenery around him began to twist and distort. The walls and furniture gradually melted away, stretching and bending until everything before his eyes seemed to exist inside a kaleidoscope.
As the potion's effect intensified, countless specks of light darted before Roger's eyes. Suddenly, a beam of light pierced his mind, as though it had opened a door to another world.
In the next instant, a million colours flashed across his vision. Roger felt as if he had entered a magical kingdom, where the air was filled with rainbow-like light and countless strange creatures danced around him, singing beautiful songs.
A deep sleepiness began in his brain and spread down his spine, sinking into every nerve and every cell. Roger felt the moonlight gently caress every inch of his skin, soft as silk and impossible to resist.
"This child is far too impatient." Jessica held her sleeping son in her arms, feeling both amused and helpless. He had only been awake for a few minutes, yet he had already managed to drink the potion and collapse again.
Roger slept soundly until evening before waking up. He rubbed his eyes and stretched lazily, and to be honest, he had slept extraordinarily well.
Yuumi was curled on the blanket beside him, and the little cat seemed to be sleeping even more deeply than he had. When she sensed that her two-legged companion was moving away, she grumbled a few times in dissatisfaction, but Roger had no time to comfort her.
He quickly checked the effects of the Blue Moon Essence. The panel now showed his name as Roger Williams, with Magic Power at 2.8 out of 2.8, Mental Strength at 13, and his talents still listed as Dark Affinity, Strong Will, and Night Vision.
"Great. It increased from 2.3 to 2.8, and my mental strength also rose by one point." Roger nodded in satisfaction. "Being able to increase magic while sleeping is a wonderful way to live."
Based on a thirty-day treatment course, Blue Moon Essence should theoretically increase his magic by fifteen points. Considering that his body would probably develop some resistance later, a conservative estimate of ten points still seemed possible.
Then his stomach growled loudly in protest. Hunger surged through him like a wave, and it seemed the side effects were far more severe than the formula had suggested.
Chef Bubble had already prepared delicious food and served it to Roger one dish at a time. First came a rich onion cream soup, its appetising aroma hitting Roger's nose and making him even hungrier.
Next came a whole roasted chicken, crispy on the outside and tender within. Roger's mouth watered instantly, and he grabbed a chicken leg in each hand before starting to gnaw without the slightest hesitation.
"Mind your manners." Jessica walked over with a frown, scolding her son for eating so improperly. Her eyes were stern, but the corners of her mouth almost betrayed a smile.
"Mum, I'm starving." Roger looked genuinely wronged, and the hunger brought by the potion made even his voice sound pitiful.
"Really?" Jessica took her son's hands, wiped them clean with a handkerchief, and placed the knife and fork into his hands.
