Chapter 24 - KING OF THE FOREST

The morning sun hung low over the academy grounds, casting a sharp, pale light across the stone paths of Stormcove. Kyle stood outside his quarters, the stiff fabric of the scarlet uniform scratching slightly against his skin. He smoothed the front of his jacket, letting out a measured breath as the heavy weight of the day settled over his shoulders.

Footsteps crunched against the gravel, and Reo came to a halt beside him, crossing his arms with an expression of dry amusement.

"How long does one take to put on makeup?" Reo drawled, his tone dripping with mock fatigue. "You're already coming late on your first day."

Ignoring the jab, Kyle turned and walked with him toward the main courtyard, where the rest of the group was waiting.

"How long does it take you guys to get ready?" Luke asked, his arms crossed as he tapped his foot impatiently.

"Ask princess over here," Reo replied, jerking his head toward Kyle.

Kyle glanced at Reo, his gaze cold and indifferent, but he didn't bother wasting breath on a response.

"We'll head to class while you go to the principal's office," Silvia said, turning on her heel without waiting for an acknowledgment.

Kyle split off from the group, his boots echoing loudly down the empty corridor leading to the administrative wing. He reached the heavy oak door of the principal's office and knocked twice.

"Wait a sec," Miya's voice called out from behind the wood. The door swung open, and her eyes widened in surprise. "Kyle? What are you doing here?"

"I was told the principal sent for me."

"Come in," a hoarse, commanding voice rumbled from within.

Kyle stepped past Miya and pushed through the secondary side door into the inner office.

"You're late," Duncan said without looking up, his hands methodically sorting a stack of crisp papers across his desk.

"Is this the kid you were talking about?" A middle-aged woman seated in the corner spoke up, her sharp eyes narrowing as they raked over Kyle, analyzing him with thinly veiled skepticism. "He looks pretty normal to me. What's so special about him?"

Duncan finally raised his head, shifting his attention toward her. "Kyle, meet your homeroom teacher, Mrs. Stella." He leaned back slightly, a faint, knowing smirk playing on his lips. "If you think he's normal, then you're in for a surprise."

Mrs. Stella squinted her eyes at Kyle once more, a deep curiosity flickering in her gaze. "Alright, let's get going." She pushed herself up from the chair, rolling her shoulders and stretching her limbs with casual grace.

"Where are we going?" Kyle asked, his voice flat.

"Where else? Class."

Across the campus, the atmosphere in the homeroom was alive with murmurs and idle chatter.

"Hey Maya, do you think that he would be joining us today?" Claire asked, leaning forward over her desk.

Maya didn't look up from her notes. "You actually believe those rumors?"

"I heard a new student was joining us today, and they say he's drop-dead gorgeous," Freya broke in, a playful grin stretching across her face as she rested her chin on her hand.

"Is that seriously all you're interested in?" Maya sighed, rubbing her temples.

"What's wrong with wanting some eye candy?"

The heavy front door suddenly unlatched and swung wide open, sending an immediate wave of silence through the room as the students scrambled back to their seats. Mrs. Stella stepped inside, followed closely by a solemn, dark-haired boy.

"Class, this is your new member," Stella announced, her voice cutting through the quiet. She turned her head slightly toward the boy. "Go settle yourself over there," she instructed, pointing to a vacant desk positioned directly behind Reo.

"Looks like I get to stay right in front of princess," Reo muttered under his breath, flashing a sideways look.

Kyle ignored the remark entirely, walking down the aisle with a measured, silent tread before pulling out his chair and sitting down. There was no need to unpack or organize; his books were already neatly arranged inside his locker, waiting for him.

"Hey, my name is Leo," the boy sitting directly behind him leaned forward, whispering with an eager, friendly smile. Kyle gave no indication that he had even heard him.

The morning bled away into a blur of standard lectures. Throughout the hours, a steady stream of curious students drifted over to introduce themselves, including Diana and Yadel, each trying to gauge the quiet newcomer. But Kyle's mind was elsewhere. Every spare moment he got—every quiet interval between classes—he closed his eyes and tried to delve inward, attempting to develop his burgeoning soul world. Yet, every single attempt ended the same way: a grinding wall of resistance that left him burning with quiet frustration.

And at night, when the rest of the academy slept, Kyle's frustration turned outward. He ventured into the shadowed corners of the grounds, searching tirelessly for the legendary weapon he had been promised—the instrument of power that still remained stubbornly out of reach.

Days bled into weeks. Two weeks after Kyle started attending Stormcove, a palpable shift occurred in the curriculum. Caesar returned from his suspension, his presence casting a sharp, tense shadow over the student body.

Then, two months after Kyle's arrival, the routine of academic life was shattered by a summoning class.

Mrs. Stella, standing at the head of the gathered students, crossed her arms with a definitive look. "Today, you are finally prepared to form a pact," she declared.

With a sweep of her hand, she led them upward, ascending high above the dense cloud layer until their mounts broke through into the blinding sunlight of a floating island suspended in the open sky. This was the council's private sanctuary—a primal forest where rare and ancient mana beasts were kept for arcane research and safekeeping.

The majestic griffin carrying them descended, its massive talons kicking up a cloud of dust as it landed gracefully at the edge of the dense, emerald treeline. Stella alighted from the saddle, resting a reassuring hand against the creature's sharp beak.

"Alright, everyone," Stella called out, her voice carrying over the whistling wind. "You have exactly one hour to venture into the forest, find a beast that resonates with your soul, and form a pact. When you hear the summoning horn blow, return here at once. Understood?"

Silvia stepped forward, shaking her head. "I already have a summon, Mrs. Stella."

"You're exempted from today's class, then," Stella nodded, stroking the griffin's feathers. "The rest of you—your time starts now. Go."

The moment Kyle's boots touched the soil of the island, a sharp, burning tingle shot through the palm of his hand. He looked down and saw that the mysterious mark inscribed upon his skin was glowing with a faint, pulsing crimson light. It wasn't just a guide; it was a physical tug, a persistent beacon urging him deeper into the heart of the woods.

He didn't hesitate. He turned away from the rest of the class, walking alone beneath the thick, suffocating canopy of ancient trees. The deeper he ventured, the more oppressive the atmosphere became. The air grew heavy, saturated with a dense, ancient mana that pressed against his chest with every step. The mark on his hand burned hotter, the light growing blindingly intense as if desperately trying to rip him forward.

Minutes later, he broke through a dense thicket into a hidden clearing at the very heart of the forest.

There, resting upon a flat bed of moss, was the beast.

It was a magnificent, terrifying creature resembling a colossal lion. Thick, interlocking grey scales covered its muscular frame like an impenetrable suit of armor, gleaming with a cold, metallic luster under the filtered sunlight. Massive, razor-sharp fangs protruded from its lower jaw, and a mane of pure, searing white flame danced wildly around its neck and head, casting dancing shadows against the bark. Right between its fierce, unblinking eyes was a distinct mark—an identical twin to the sigil burning on Kyle's hand.

*I thought it would be a sword or something of the sort,* Kyle thought, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in the sheer predatory majesty of the beast.

The creature raised its massive head, its golden eyes locking onto Kyle. Yet, there was no immediate roar, no explosive charge. Instead, the beast simply stared at him for a long, heavy second, before slowly lowering its head back down to the earth and closing its eyes in utter, dismissive contempt.

Far away, in the obsidian halls of a distant realm, a realm that knows not the concept of time. The Dark Lord sat upon his throne of shadow, his voice echoed, causing the mist all around shiver. The mere oppressive presence of the Dark Lord weighed down on Vaygar.

"Go," the Dark Lord commanded, his glowing eyes fixed on the massive beast kneeling before him, "lay low in Stormcove and wait for your new master to claim you."

Vaygar lowered his massive, scaled head against the cold stone floor, a low rumble vibrating in his throat. "Lord... how will I recognize my master among the weaklings?"

"He will bear the same mark as you," the Dark Lord replied, his voice devoid of warmth. "He will be entirely different from the rest of the fools who try to bind you. You will know it is him the moment you see him."

Back in the quiet clearing, the memory of that command burned inside the beast's mind like a smoldering coal.

*I obeyed my creator's command,* Vaygar thought, a surge of bitter, ancient pride welling up within his chest. *I waited thirty long years in this desolate sanctuary to meet my true master—someone worthy of my unmatched strength, someone actually capable of wielding my power. And yet... what is this? This arrogant, painfully weak human stands before me, bearing the mark like a cheap trinket. Who does he think he is to dare claim me? I will never bend my knee to someone weaker than myself. The King of the Forest shall never serve a lesser being.*

Slowly, heavily, the colossal lion-dragon uncoiled its muscles and rose to its feet. The white flames wrapping its mane erupted into a violent, blinding inferno, scorching the surrounding air and turning the grass to ash in an instant.

Kyle didn't flinch. He didn't retreat an inch from the terrifying wall of mana pressure crashing down upon him. His face remained a mask of cold, unbothered arrogance, his dark eyes staring unblinkingly into the creature's blazing gaze.

Vaygar opened his massive jaws, letting loose a tectonic roar that shattered the surrounding silence and shook the very branches from the trees.

"Go away, you insignificant human!" Vaygar roared, his voice vibrating straight into Kyle's bones. "You are not worthy to be my master! I, Vaygar, King of the Forest, shall never submit to a lesser!"
