Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: First Safehouse

Morning arrived quietly in the Lower District. Unlike the world above, there was no sunrise. Instead, rows of warm lights slowly brightened across the underground station, signaling the beginning of another day.

People stepped out of converted train cars carrying buckets, tools, and baskets of food. Children gathered near the small underground school. Mechanics returned to the workshop before breakfast. Life continued.

Kai stood outside one of the old train cars, watching the settlement wake up. It was hard to believe monsters and Veil Cracks existed only a few miles away.

Lira walked over carrying two cups of hot tea. She handed one to Kai. "You were awake early."

Kai accepted the cup. "I couldn't sleep."

"Because of the Hunter Mark?"

Kai nodded. "And because of... everything."

Lira understood. Neither of them spoke for a while. The quiet wasn't uncomfortable. It was peaceful.

Finally, Kai broke the silence. "Do you ever get used to living like this?"

Lira looked across the station. "I don't think anyone does. We just learn to keep moving."

Kai lowered his eyes. "I used to worry about missing project deadlines."

A small smile appeared on Lira's face. "I don't know what a project deadline is."

Kai laughed softly. "I almost envy you."

Before Lira could answer, Mira's voice echoed through the station. "There you are!"

She hurried toward them carrying a heavy backpack that clinked with every step.

Kai raised an eyebrow. "What are you carrying?"

"My retirement plan." She unzipped the bag just enough for Kai to see several small Echo Crystals inside.

Kai's eyes widened. "Mira..."

"Relax. I wasn't stealing this time."

Lira crossed her arms. "You traded for them?"

Mira smiled proudly. "I have a reputation."

Kai looked at the crystals again. "What do people use these for?"

"Depends on the buyer." She held up a small crystal glowing with faint blue light. "This one can power equipment for weeks." She picked up another. "This one helps reinforce shelter barriers." Then she held up a cracked crystal. "And this one almost blew my eyebrows off."

Kai stared at her. "You still bought it?"

"It was cheap."

Lira quietly sighed. "You are impossible."

"I've heard that before."

The three of them walked toward a quieter section of the station. Several empty train cars had been converted into temporary rooms for travelers. Mira unlocked one of the doors. "This is where you'll stay."

Kai stepped inside. The room was small. Two bunk beds stood against one wall. A wooden table sat beneath a dim light. There were blankets, bottled water, and neatly folded clothes left behind by previous occupants.

"It isn't much," Mira said. "But it's safe."

Kai looked around. After everything he had experienced since dying, it felt like luxury. He placed his backpack beside one of the beds. "I never thought I'd be happy to see a mattress."

Mira laughed. "Wait until you try the pillow."

Kai smiled. "I've officially lowered my standards."

As Lira looked around the room, her expression slowly changed. She turned toward Kai. "Stand still."

Kai blinked. "What?"

"Just for a moment."

He did as she asked. Lira stepped closer and carefully studied him. Not his face. Not his clothes. Something deeper.

Kai noticed the silver ribbon around her wrist beginning to glow. "You see the threads again?"

She nodded. "They're changing."

Kai's smile faded. "The second one?"

"Yes. It became clearer after we entered the Lower District."

Kai felt his stomach tighten. "What does that mean?"

Lira slowly shook her head. "I still don't know. But something is affecting it."

Before Kai could ask another question, Reginald suddenly spoke. Not inside Kai's mind. Out loud. "Your posture is inefficient."

The room fell silent. Kai's eyes widened. Mira stared at him. Lira slowly lowered her hand.

Kai covered his mouth. He hadn't spoken. So who had?

The room fell into complete silence. Kai slowly lowered his hand. Lira and Mira were both staring at him.

Mira blinked twice. "...Did you just say that?"

Kai shook his head immediately. "I didn't."

Lira remained calm. "But someone did."

Kai's heartbeat quickened. Inside his mind, Reginald sounded just as surprised. "I did not intend to vocalize."

Kai answered silently. "What does that mean?"

"I am uncertain."

Mira waved a hand in front of Kai's face. "Are you talking to yourself again?"

Kai forced a smile. "It's... complicated."

"I noticed."

Lira took one step closer. "When you spoke..."

Kai interrupted her. "I wasn't the one speaking."

She studied him carefully. "I believe you."

Mira looked between them. "You two are making this sound much scarier than it already is."

Kai sat on the edge of the lower bunk. "So the Echoes can speak through me now?"

Reginald answered inside his mind. "The synchronization between host and Echo has increased."

Kai frowned. "That doesn't sound like good news."

"It is neither beneficial nor harmful. It is simply a change."

Marcus finally spoke. "It may become dangerous."

Kai sighed. "I was hoping you wouldn't say that."

A gentle knock came from outside the train car. Mira opened the door. An elderly man stood outside carrying a wooden toolbox. "I heard we had newcomers." He smiled warmly. "My name is Owen. I maintain the safehouses."

Kai stood and shook his hand. "I'm Kai."

Owen looked around the room, checking the walls and windows. "Everything looks fine." He tightened a loose bolt near one of the bunk beds. "You'll be comfortable here."

Kai smiled. "Thank you."

Owen nodded. "We all help each other down here. No one survives alone."

After finishing his work, he started toward the door. Then he suddenly stopped. His smile disappeared. "There is one thing."

Kai looked at him. "What is it?"

Owen lowered his voice. "If you hear three bells after midnight, don't open the door."

Kai frowned. "Why?"

Owen looked toward the dark tunnel outside. "Because no one who knocks after the third bell belongs here."

Without another word, he left. The room became quiet again.

Mira slowly closed the door. "I've lived here for months. I still don't know if he's serious or trying to scare people."

Kai laughed softly. "I hope it's the second one."

Lira wasn't smiling. "He wasn't joking."

Kai noticed the expression on her face. "You've heard the bells before?"

She nodded. "Once."

"And?"

"I never opened the door."

Kai decided not to ask any more questions. Some answers could wait.

Later that afternoon, Mira spread several Echo Crystals across the wooden table. She carefully sorted them into small groups.

Kai watched curiously. "You organize them?"

"I have to." She picked up a dull gray crystal. "This one has almost no energy left." She set it aside. Then she held up another with a faint green glow. "This one can stabilize barrier generators."

Kai leaned closer. "So every Echo Crystal is different."

"Exactly. They're valuable because no two are completely alike."

Lira quietly observed Kai while Mira continued explaining the crystals. Something about him had changed. It was subtle. Almost impossible to notice. But every now and then, his posture became straighter. His expression became more confident. For only a second. Then it returned to normal.

Reginald. The Echo's personality was beginning to leave traces behind.

Lira looked away before Kai noticed her watching.

As evening approached, the station slowly grew quieter. Families returned to their rooms. Lanterns replaced the bright work lights. Guards took their positions at every entrance to the Lower District.

Kai stood outside the train car. He looked toward the dark tunnel leading back to the surface. For the first time since dying, he had a place to rest. A place that almost felt safe.

His System quietly appeared.

---

Current Status

Host Stability: 78%

Identity Drift: Increasing

Hunter Activity: Elevated

Recommendation:

Remain Hidden.

---

Kai dismissed the screen. He whispered to himself, "I can do that."

Far above the city, a Hunter scout watched the entrance to the underground tunnels from the roof of a collapsed apartment building. The scout lowered a small viewing device. A faint blue light flashed across its surface. A report appeared.

Hunter Mark Active

Potential Target Remains Within Search Zone

Positive Identification Pending

The scout pressed a button. A calm voice answered. "Report."

"The target has not revealed their identity."

The voice remained silent for a moment. Then it replied, "Continue observation. Do not compromise the operation."

The connection ended. The scout disappeared into the darkness.

Deep below, Kai looked up without knowing why. He had the strange feeling that someone, somewhere, was patiently waiting for him to make a mistake.
