As they stepped out of the Vanguard quarters, the cool morning air hit Aster's face, helping to clear the last of his headache. He followed Sylas down the winding paths leading away from the barracks and into the main village area.
Aster's jaw nearly dropped. Yesterday, he had only seen the training grounds, but today the village was absolutely teeming with life. It wasn't just a normal town; it looked like a massive, global crossroads.
"Wow..." Aster muttered, looking around in awe.
He could see people from literally all over the world. There were mages in elegant, flowing silks that looked like traditional eastern robes, warriors in heavy Nordic-style furs, and traders dressed in vibrant, desert garments. Dozens of different languages mixed in the air, creating a lively, chaotic hum.
Along the sides of the streets, open-air markets were overflowing with bizarre goods. Aster passed a fruit stand filled with spiked, neon-blue fruits that seemed to gently glow, and another vendor hawking strange, glittering meats sizzling on a grill that smelled incredibly savory but looked like nothing he had ever seen in his old world.
Sylas smiled tiredly, enjoying Aster's amazed expression, but he didn't stop walking. They pushed through the bustling crowd, heading toward the very center of the settlement where the paths cleared.
Suddenly, Sylas stopped and gestured forward.
Rising up against the morning sky was a massive, breathtakingly beautiful church. It was built from pure white stone that seemed to catch the sunlight, decorated with intricate, towering stained-glass windows that shimmered in a thousand different colors. The architecture was both ancient and deeply majestic, radiating a quiet, powerful energy that made the air feel heavy.
Sylas turned to Aster, his usual playful smirk replaced by a look of quiet respect.
"We're here," Sylas said softly, pointing toward the grand entrance. "The place that keeps the Heart of God."
Sylas pushed open the heavy wooden doors, and Aster stepped inside.
The interior of the church was massive, with high, vaulted ceilings that seemed to stretch up into infinity. Just like outside, the hall was filled with an incredibly diverse crowd. People of all different nationalities, dressed in armor, robes, and foreign clothing, were scattered throughout the space. Some were kneeling in quiet prayer, their heads bowed, while others walked silently along the walls, studying the giant, intricate paintings that detailed the history of this world and the gods who shaped it.
Among the people, various heart-animals paced or rested quietly beside their partners—some were sleek, glowing panthers, others were majestic birds perched on shoulders, all behaving with a strange, reverent calmness.
But what immediately drew Aster's eyes was the center of the cathedral.
Right in the middle of the grand hall stood a giant, monolithic stone. It was rough and ancient, towering over everyone in the room, but it was far from ordinary. A powerful, pulsating light emanated from deep within the rock, casting a soft, rhythmic glow across the entire church. The air around the stone visibly shimmered with raw, concentrated magical energy.
Aster could feel the vibrations of the stone's pulse beating in sync with his own chest.
"That's it," Sylas whispered beside him, his tired eyes reflecting the glowing light. "The God's Heart. That stone holds the core of this world's power. Step up to it, Aster. It's time to see what's waiting for you."
As Aster and Sylas walked closer to the glowing monolith, the crowd began to gather around the perimeter, forming a wide, respectful circle.
Standing right next to the giant stone was a tall, stern-looking man dressed in formal Vanguard robes. He raised his hands, and the entire cathedral fell into a dead, expectant silence.
"Everyone, please listen!" the man called out, his powerful voice echoing off the high, vaulted ceilings. "I think everyone here already knows why you are here, and where you are right now. As you all know, this is the Heart of God."
He gestured broadly to the pulsing, radiant stone beside him.
"Once you step forward and touch it, God will infuse your soul with magic. You will use that magic to summon your heart-animal. But that animal is not just a companion," he warned, his eyes scanning the crowd of new arrivals. "Your animal can also transform into your weapon. When you fight the monsters out there, you can use normal steel to kill the common beasts. But if you meet an Upper-Rank Monster, normal weapons are useless. You must use your own soul weapon to kill them."
The man stepped closer to the stone, his expression turning deeply serious.
"On your weapon, there will be a gemstone. That stone is your animal's heart, the physical core of your bond. The Upper-Rank monsters cannot be harmed by anything else. And!" He paused, letting his voice ring out with absolute gravity. "The most important thing you must remember is this... your lives are tied. If your animal dies, or if your weapon's gemstone is broken... you will also die. Your souls are one and the same."
Aster stepped forward, his boots clicking softly against the pristine white floor as he left the safety of the crowd. With every step closer to the monolith, the air grew increasingly heavy, thick with an unimaginable pressure.
By the time he stood right in front of the giant stone, he could feel a literal gale of raw, invisible magic blowing outward from it. It ruffled his clothes and blew his hair back, humming with a force so intense it made his skin tingle and his ears ring.
Aster swallowed hard, staring at the pulsing, ancient surface. He raised his hand, his fingers trembling slightly, and gently pressed his palm against the stone.
Instantly, the world around him seemed to vanish into a blinding, pure white light.
A sudden jolt of electricity surged through his fingertips. He gasped as a tidal wave of warm, overwhelming magic flooded into his body. It rushed through his veins like wildfire, expanding outward to his fingertips and toes, before suddenly violently pulling inward—surging directly into his chest.
Aster gripped the stone tighter, his eyes wide. He could feel the magic wrapping tightly around his very heart, sinking deep into his soul and embedding itself there, molding into a shape that was uniquely his. It was a feeling of absolute fullness, like a sleeping part of him had just been forcefully awakened.
