Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 : Questions in the Dark

The room fell silent.

Not the peaceful kind.

The suffocating kind.

A single lantern hung from the ceiling, its golden light swaying gently with the evening breeze that slipped through the half-open window. Shadows stretched across the walls, dancing softly in the darkness.

Xiaoyu sat quietly.

Across from her, Tianyu remained seated, his posture as straight as ever.

The clean robes he had changed into concealed the wounds he suffered during the attack. His injuries had already been treated, but exhaustion lingered in his eyes.

The events of the day had clearly taken their toll.

Yet despite everything, his gaze remained sharp.

Observant.

Unwavering.

And right now, that gaze was fixed entirely on her.

"Did you notice anything strange today?"

The question lingered in the room.

Simple.

Direct.

Yet to Xiaoyu, it felt like a blade suspended above her neck.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the teacup in her hands.

The tea inside had long since gone cold.

Strange?

What exactly did he mean?

The attack?

The assassins?

Gu Liang's death?

Or...

Her?

A chill crawled up her spine.

Ever since arriving in this world, she had lived with a constant fear.

The fear of making a mistake.

The fear of saying the wrong thing.

The fear that someone would eventually realize she wasn't Yuchen.

That she was merely Xiaoyu.

A stranger trapped inside another person's body.

For a brief moment, panic threatened to surface.

Then she forced it down.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Just as she always did.

"I noticed many things."

The voice that left her mouth sounded calm.

Far calmer than she actually felt.

Tianyu remained silent.

Waiting.

Listening.

Watching.

"The attackers were organized," Xiaoyu continued.

"They knew exactly where to strike."

A pause.

"And they retreated immediately after Elder Gu Liang died."

Tianyu nodded slightly.

His expression did not change.

The answer was reasonable.

Logical.

The sort of observation anyone present could have made.

Yet Xiaoyu had the uncomfortable feeling that it wasn't the answer he wanted.

Several moments passed.

Neither spoke.

The pressure in the room gradually increased.

Then Tianyu finally broke the silence.

"Anything else?"

Xiaoyu's heart skipped a beat.

There it was.

The real question.

The one hidden beneath everything else.

She forced herself to meet his gaze.

"Should there be?"

For the first time that evening, something flickered across Tianyu's face.

Not amusement.

Not quite a smile.

But something close.

"Perhaps."

The answer did little to ease her anxiety.

If anything, it only made her more nervous.

The room fell silent once again.

Outside, faint footsteps echoed from distant corridors as disciples continued moving throughout the residence.

Inside, however, the atmosphere felt unbearably tense.

Then Tianyu spoke again.

"The masked leader."

Immediately, Xiaoyu felt her chest tighten.

"The masked leader looked at you before he left."

The words landed heavily.

For a brief moment, neither moved.

Neither spoke.

So he noticed.

Of course he noticed.

Tianyu noticed everything.

She carefully lowered her teacup.

"I saw."

Tianyu's gaze remained fixed on her.

"And?"

Xiaoyu hesitated.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But even that was enough.

Enough for someone like Tianyu to notice.

"I don't know what it meant."

Fortunately, that much was true.

The memory still lingered vividly in her mind.

The chaos.

The blood.

The retreat.

And before leaving—

The masked leader had looked directly at Yuchen.

Not the zichen.

Not Tianyu.

Not any of the elders.

Yuchen.

The thought unsettled her even now.

Tianyu slowly leaned back into his chair.

His eyes never left hers.

As though he were attempting to see through every answer she gave.

Then, unexpectedly, his expression softened.

"Yuchen."

His voice became quieter.

Gentler.

"Have we become strangers?"

Xiaoyu froze.

The question caught her completely off guard.

For a moment, she forgot how to breathe.

Tianyu lowered his gaze.

The lantern light reflected softly within his eyes.

"When we were younger, you used to follow me everywhere."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Small.

Nostalgic.

"We trained together."

"We skipped lessons together."

"We even got punished together."

His smile widened slightly.

Only for a moment.

Then it disappeared.

"Somewhere along the way..."

His voice grew quieter.

"You stopped talking to me."

The room became still.

Xiaoyu remained silent.

Not because she didn't want to answer.

But because she couldn't.

Those memories didn't belong to her.

They belonged to Yuchen.

To the real Yuchen.

The one whose place she had unknowingly taken.

A strange guilt settled inside her chest.

Not her guilt.

Yet somehow it still hurt.

Tianyu looked toward the window.

Toward the distant lights of the sect beyond.

"The attack today changed many things."

His voice was calm.

But Xiaoyu could hear the weight behind it.

"Elder Gu Liang is dead."

"The sect lost many disciples."

"Fear has already begun spreading."

He paused briefly.

"And I don't think this is over."

Xiaoyu quietly listened.

For the first time since entering the room, Tianyu seemed less like an heir discussing sect affairs.

And more like an older brother burdened by responsibilities he never asked for.

"The people responsible for this attack prepared carefully."

His gaze darkened.

"Too carefully."

"They knew our defenses."

"They knew our routines."

"They knew exactly when to strike."

A dangerous silence followed.

Both of them understood the implication.

Someone may have helped them.

Someone from within the sect.

The thought alone was enough to make Xiaoyu uneasy.

Eventually, Tianyu rose from his seat.

The conversation appeared to be over.

At least for now.

He walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Without turning around, he spoke one final sentence.

"Be careful."

Xiaoyu blinked.

Tianyu's voice lowered.

"There are people within the sect that I no longer trust."

The words lingered in the air.

A moment later, the door opened.

Then closed.

Leaving Xiaoyu alone.

Silence returned once more.

Yet this time it felt heavier.

Much heavier.

She stared at the closed door for a long time.

Unable to move.

Unable to think.

Until one realization slowly surfaced.

Tianyu hadn't come to investigate her.

He hadn't come to accuse her.

He hadn't even come because he was suspicious.

He came because he was worried.

Worried about Yuchen.

His younger brother.

The real Yuchen.

And somehow...

That realization made Xiaoyu feel even worse.

Outside the residence, the night had grown darker.

The moon hung high above the Heng Ming Sect.

Silver light bathed the mountains surrounding the sect grounds.

Everything appeared peaceful.

Quiet.

Normal.

But only on the surface.

Shen Wei stood alone beneath the moonlight.

Motionless.

Like a statue guarding the residence.

His expression remained calm as always.

Yet his eyes were fixed upon the distant mountains.

Toward the direction the assassins had escaped.

For the first time that day, a faint frown appeared on his face.

Because during the battle, he had noticed something.

Something he had not told anyone.

Not Tianyu.

Not the Sect Master.

Not even Yuchen.

The fighting style of one of the masked assassins had felt familiar.

Too familiar.

As if he had seen it before.

Years ago.

His gaze narrowed slightly.

The possibility was troubling.

Because if his suspicion was correct...

Then the enemies of the Heng Ming Sect were not outsiders.

They were already much closer than anyone imagined.

Far closer.

And that made them infinitely more dangerous.

The night continued in silence.

Unaware that the shadows had only just begun to move.
