Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 23: THINGS LEFT UNSAID

CHAPTER 23: THINGS LEFT UNSAID

The strange thing about change was that it rarely announced itself.

It didn't knock.

It didn't ask permission.

It simply arrived one day and sat quietly in the corner of your life until someone noticed.

Most people didn't.

Some people did.

The week continued much like every other.

Classes.

Assignments.

Lunch breaks.

Teachers reminding everyone that graduation was approaching.

The usual.

"Four months."

Kai sighed dramatically.

"I'm being hunted by that number."

Mira looked up from her notebook.

"You bring it up more than anyone."

"Because it's terrifying."

"You said that yesterday."

"And I'll say it tomorrow."

Laughter spread around the table.

The friend group's usual lunch spot beneath the courtyard tree buzzed with familiar energy.

Students passed by.

Conversations overlapped.

Life moved on.

Liora listened while absentmindedly stirring her drink.

A vibration came from her phone.

One short buzz.

Her eyes immediately flickered downward.

Instinctive.

Automatic.

Then she stopped herself.

Unfortunately, Mira saw everything.

"There."

Liora groaned.

"What now?"

"The phone thing."

"The phone thing?"

"You have a phone thing."

Kai nodded seriously.

"You definitely have a phone thing."

"I hate this group."

"We know."

Jaden looked exhausted.

"Can we eat in peace for once?"

"No."

Kai and Mira answered together.

The conversation moved on quickly.

Nobody pressed further.

Nobody really cared.

Except someone had noticed.

Not the phone.

Not the message.

The habit.

Evren sat quietly across the table.

Listening.

Watching.

As he always did.

Not suspicious.

Not jealous.

Just noticing.

Liora had always been present.

Even when she was distracted.

Even when she was tired.

Lately...

sometimes she seemed somewhere else.

The thought disappeared as quickly as it came.

Because Kai had started another argument.

This time about whether fish experienced boredom.

Which was somehow worse.

After classes ended, the friend group stayed behind to work on a presentation.

A teacher had made the mistake of assigning them a shared project.

It was going exactly as expected.

"Why is Kai doing the title slide?"

"Because I have artistic vision."

"You used five fonts."

"Exactly."

"That's not a good thing."

"It is if you're brave."

Jaden looked seconds away from giving up on humanity.

Liora laughed.

The room felt warm beneath the golden afternoon sunlight.

The kind of ordinary school memory she'd probably remember years later.

Her phone lit up beside her notebook.

Rowan

surviving?

A small smile appeared before she could stop it.

Liora

barely

The reply came immediately.

Rowan

tragic

For a second, she found herself wanting to tell him about Kai's disaster of a presentation.

The thought felt natural now.

Comfortable.

And that should have felt strange.

But it didn't.

Hours later, the project finally ended.

The classroom slowly emptied.

Mira left first.

Jaden followed.

Liora packed her bag.

"See you tomorrow."

"Bye."

"Don't be late."

"No promises."

The usual.

Then she left too.

Leaving only two people behind.

Kai.

And Evren.

The teacher had asked them to clean up before locking the room.

A task neither of them wanted.

"So."

Kai stacked chairs.

"I'm charging emotional damages."

"For what?"

"This."

He gestured at the classroom.

"The labor."

Evren laughed quietly.

"You moved three chairs."

"It was exhausting."

"You sat down twice."

"I needed breaks."

Kai pointed at him.

"You're unsympathetic."

"You're dramatic."

"Correct."

Silence settled briefly.

Comfortable.

Easy.

The kind that existed between people who'd known each other long enough.

Sunlight streamed through the classroom windows.

The building had grown quieter.

Most students were already gone.

Kai continued stacking chairs.

Then glanced sideways.

"You've been thinking a lot lately."

Evren paused.

"Have I?"

"Yeah."

Kai adjusted another chair.

"It's annoying."

A laugh escaped Evren.

"Sorry."

"Don't apologize."

"Then why mention it?"

Kai shrugged.

"Because you're usually easier to read."

That earned a small smile.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Evren looked down at the papers in his hands.

"Lio's been weird lately."

The words slipped out more easily than he'd expected.

Kai didn't look surprised.

Not even a little.

Instead, he simply nodded.

"Yeah."

Evren glanced up.

"You noticed?"

"Dude."

Kai looked offended.

"I notice everything."

"No, you don't."

"I absolutely do."

"You walked into a glass door last week."

"That was tactical."

"It wasn't."

"It was."

Evren laughed despite himself.

Then the smile faded.

Only slightly.

Kai noticed.

Of course he did.

"She's distracted."

Kai said quietly.

"Sometimes."

Evren nodded.

"Yeah."

Kai sat on top of a desk.

"Smiles at her phone."

"Yeah."

"Zones out."

"Yeah."

"Doesn't hear half of what we're saying."

Evren looked away.

"Yeah."

The classroom grew quieter.

Not uncomfortable.

Just honest.

Finally, Evren sighed.

"You think something's wrong?"

Kai thought about it.

Actually thought about it.

Then shrugged.

"I don't know."

A beat passed.

"Maybe."

Another.

"Maybe not."

Evren waited.

Kai leaned back against the desk.

"People change."

The words were simple.

Yet they landed somewhere deeper than expected.

Outside, the evening sunlight painted the school grounds gold.

Inside, neither spoke for a moment.

Then Kai pointed toward him.

"But if she joins a secret cult, we intervene."

Evren blinked.

"What?"

"I'm serious."

"No, you're not."

"I am."

Kai folded his arms.

"Human sacrifice affects attendance."

The silence shattered.

Evren laughed.

Actually laughed.

The kind that made his shoulders shake.

"There he is."

Kai grinned.

"What?"

"Normal you."

For a moment, neither mentioned Liora again.

They finished cleaning.

Packed their bags.

Turned off the classroom lights.

And walked out together.

As they stepped into the fading evening sunlight, Kai shoved his hands into his pockets.

"Whatever's going on."

Evren looked over.

Kai shrugged.

"I'm sure it'll be fine."

The words were casual.

Almost careless.

Yet somehow they sounded sincere.

Evren smiled faintly.

"Yeah."

Maybe it would.

Neither of them knew how wrong they were.

And somewhere across the city, a notification appeared on Liora's screen.

A familiar name.

A familiar conversation.

A familiar smile.

One she hadn't realized was becoming a habit.
