25 August 1974 — Jaipur; then the road to Ranthambore
The idea had come from Sakshi.
Not as a formal proposal. She was not a woman who arrived at things with argument structures and supporting documentation. She made observations — precise, unhurried observations that she delivered in the same tone she used for everything else, so that you sometimes didn't understand what you'd been told until hours later when it was still with you and you realised it hadn't left because it was true.
The observation had come in March.
They had been in Bombay, the Pedder Road offices, and she had come with him for a day of meetings because she occasionally did this — sat in the room and watched without participating, observing what she called the ecosystem of the work. On the drive back to the hotel in the Bombay evening, the city doing what the Bombay evening did, the specific layering of traffic and light and salt air and the sound of a city that never fully stopped, she had been looking out the window and had said, without preamble, without building up to it: "You don't have a place that is only yours."
He had been reading a briefing document.
He lowered it.
"What do you mean?" he said.
"The Gorakhpur villa is the family's home," she said, still looking at the window, her voice with the quality it had when she was saying something she had been thinking about carefully. "Your parents are there. Aditya is there when he's not travelling. Everyone comes and goes and it is the family's house and it is wonderful. The Bombay flat is a sophisticated extension of the office — it has a bed and a kitchen and you sleep there but you don't live there. Delhi is the operational flat." She paused. "I'm not complaining about any of this. I am making an observation. You don't have a place that is only yours. That exists entirely outside what you're building."
He looked at her profile against the window.
"Does that bother you?" he said.
She turned from the window and looked at him directly with the expression she had when she was slightly surprised by the direction a question had taken. "I said it about you," she said. "Not about me."
"You said it about us," he said.
She was quiet for a moment. "Yes," she said. "About us."
"What kind of place?" he said.
She turned back to the window. She was quiet for a while, looking at the Bombay night moving past, the city's specific illuminated geography, the way Bombay's light was different from anywhere else's light because Bombay was built on a peninsula and the water was always somewhere nearby making the light softer, distributing it.
"Somewhere with animals," she said finally. "Real animals. Not a farm. Not managed livestock. Animals that exist as themselves, not in service of something." She paused. "Somewhere large. Somewhere that goes past the horizon you can see. Somewhere—" She stopped.
"Somewhere you can't see the edge of from where you're standing," he finished.
She turned from the window and looked at him.
He had completed her sentence exactly. Not as a guess — as a recognition. The specific recognition of someone who has been paying attention.
"Yes," she said. "That."
He said nothing else in the car.
But in June, when Ranjit Kumar brought him the file on available land parcels in Rajasthan in connection with the Barmer petroleum expansion, Karan had gone through the file carefully and at the back — unrelated to any petroleum question, included because Ranjit Kumar was thorough and included information that might be useful regardless of its immediate relevance — there was a section on Sawai Madhopur district.
Land adjacent to the Ranthambore forest area.
Agricultural land being sold by a family who had farmed it for three generations. Twelve thousand acres. Dry farming, marginal productivity, the children of the family had moved to Delhi and Bombay and did not want to farm. The eastern boundary of the parcel was adjacent to the Ranthambore reserve for approximately three kilometres.
He had read the section three times.
Then he had called Ranjit Kumar.
"The Ranthambore parcel," he said. "The Singhania family land."
"Yes, sir," Ranjit Kumar said.
"How close to the tiger territory?"
"The eastern boundary is the reserve boundary, sir. The tigers range freely across it. The Ranthambore reserve has no perimeter fence — it's too large for fencing. The tigers go where they go."
He had been quiet for a moment, thinking about Sakshi standing in the Bombay car's window reflection, thinking about the sentence she had finished for herself and he had finished differently.
Somewhere with animals. Somewhere large. Somewhere you can't see the edge of from where you're standing.
"Buy it," he said.
"The full parcel, sir? All twelve thousand acres?"
"All twelve thousand acres."
He didn't tell Sakshi.
He wanted the telling to happen at the place rather than about the place. He wanted her to see the land before she heard what it meant, because land was a thing that needed to be felt with your feet rather than described with words, and Sakshi was a person who understood that distinction.
In July he told her he had a meeting in Jaipur in August and that he wanted her to come with him for a few days, just the two of them. She had looked at him with the expression she kept for things that didn't fit her model of how he operated.
"A holiday," she said.
"A trip," he said.
"You don't take holidays," she said. "You take strategic retreats that coincide with factory visits."
"A trip," he said again.
"To Jaipur."
"And Ranthambore," he said.
She was very still for a moment.
"The tiger reserve," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"I need to pack properly," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"For the field or for the city?"
"Both," he said.
She packed both.
They left Gorakhpur at five in the morning on August 24th, drove to Lucknow in the first light of an August morning that was humid and lavender and smelled of the rain that had fallen at two in the morning and already evaporated. The train from Lucknow to Jaipur was the morning express. He had booked the first-class compartment — not the standard first class but the special compartment, the one with the private cabin and the good beds and the window that went floor-to-ceiling and the specific luxury of a journey that was the journey rather than a means to the destination.
Sakshi had stood at the window as the compartment attendant brought the first round of tea — real chai, not the tepid gesture that lesser trains offered — and watched India move past at speed.
"I forgot how much I love train journeys," she said.
"You always say that on trains," he said.
"Because I always forget between them," she said. "The forgetting is part of it. If you remembered it fully you'd spend your entire life on trains."
"There are worse fates," he said.
She turned from the window and looked at him. "You have work in your bag," she said.
"I have work in my bag," he confirmed.
"If you take it out before Ajmer I will put it out the window," she said.
He looked at her.
"The window doesn't open," he said.
"I'll manage," she said.
He looked at his bag.
Then he pushed it under the seat.
She smiled — the specific smile of a victory that was not really about the work, that was about something else, about the transaction of being here and being present and being in this train compartment in the morning light without the machinery of the programmes running between them.
"Good," she said. She turned back to the window.
Outside the window, the UP landscape was moving past — the flat agricultural land, the October harvest fields still months away, the August green of the post-monsoon fields that was the deepest green India produced, a green that was unreasonable in its depth.
She reached across and put her hand over his on the seat between them.
Jaipur arrived in the afternoon.
The Rambagh Palace was not the kind of accommodation Karan normally chose. He was not drawn to luxury for its own sake — he understood it as a category, assessed it functionally, and generally found that a clean room with a good desk served his purposes. But he had chosen the Rambagh Palace for this trip specifically because it was not functional. Because it was the opposite of functional — it was beautiful in the way that things built for Maharajas were beautiful, which was the beauty of resources deployed without constraint in pursuit of a specific aesthetic.
The sandstone facade in the afternoon light. The gardens that were maintained with the specific military precision of Mughal garden geometry. The rooms that were rooms in the way that rooms could only be when ceilings were high enough and proportions were correct and the furniture was the furniture of a place that had always expected to be significant.
Sakshi walked through the suite they had been given and touched things as she walked — her habit with new spaces, the specific tactile assessment of someone who understood that spaces had character that could only be read through touch.
"The tiles," she said. She was looking at the floor. "These are original. These have been here since the palace was built."
"Yes," he said.
"People have walked on these tiles for a hundred years," she said. "All the people who stayed here. The way their weight has polished the high points, slightly, and left the low points with their original texture — you can read the history of the foot traffic in the pattern."
He looked at the floor.
He had not noticed this. He would not have noticed it without her.
"You're right," he said.
"I'm always right about floors," she said. "Come and see the garden."
They stood on the balcony and looked at the garden — the formal Mughal garden in the foreground, the lawns extending past it, the late afternoon Jaipur light on the sandstone that made everything look like it was lit from within.
A peacock was walking across the nearest lawn with the specific unhurried dignity of a peacock, its tail dragging behind it in the folded position, unconcerned by the humans on the balcony.
"I want to know where the peacock is sleeping tonight," Sakshi said. "I want to know which tree."
"Why?" he said.
"Because a peacock that has chosen a tree knows something about the tree that we don't," she said. "The right branch. The right height. The specific position where it's safe from everything below and sheltered from the wind and positioned to see the morning light first." She was watching the peacock. "I want to know how it knows."
He was looking at her profile against the garden.
"I have thought about something," he said.
She didn't turn from the peacock. "Tell me."
"Tomorrow," he said. "We drive to Ranthambore in the morning. Hamid — the driver Ranjit Kumar arranged — knows the land. We have the full day."
"The full day," she said.
"All of it," he said. "Not a tiger reserve visit. The land."
She turned from the peacock and looked at him.
"The land," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She held his gaze.
"There is land," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"That we own," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"How much land?" she said.
"Tomorrow," he said.
She looked at him for a long moment with the specific expression of someone who has been handed a gift and is being told they must wait until morning to open it and is assessing whether the waiting is acceptable.
"How many acres?" she said.
"Tomorrow," he said.
"Karan," she said.
"Tomorrow," he said.
She looked at him one more time.
"I hate you a very specific amount right now," she said.
"I know," he said.
"And I love you considerably more than that," she said. "But the hating is real."
"I know that too," he said.
She turned back to the peacock.
The peacock had stopped and appeared to be staring at something in the grass with the complete, unblinking attention of a bird that had found something interesting.
"That peacock is looking at a beetle," she said. "Or possibly a small frog. The angle of its head — it's tracking something that moves intermittently."
"How can you tell the difference between a beetle and a frog from this distance?" he said.
"Beetles don't cause that kind of interest," she said. "Something that moves and stops. Something with unpredictable movement that requires patience." She paused. "Frog."
They stood on the balcony and watched the peacock.
It was a frog.
When it moved, the peacock moved, with the complete focused attention of a bird that had been waiting for exactly this moment.
"There," she said.
He put his arm around her.
She leaned into him slightly — not dramatically, the small lean of a person who has been standing and finds that leaning is better than standing and that the shoulder available is the right shoulder for the leaning.
"Tomorrow," he said. He said it differently from the previous times — not as a deflection but as a promise.
"Tomorrow," she said.
She looked at him across the table with the expression she had when she was both exasperated and fond, which was a combination that appeared regularly in their marriage and that she had come to understand as one of the defining textures of it.
"Tell me something about where we're going," she said. "Since you're clearly thinking about it."
"The dhok forest," he said.
"What about it?"
"The dhok — Anogeissus pendula — is the dominant species of the dry deciduous forests of the Aravallis," he said. "It's a remarkable tree. It grows in conditions that would kill most other species — rocky slopes, minimal soil, minimal rainfall. It's thin-barked and the leaves are small because it's conserving water. It looks bare from a distance. Up close, in the monsoon, the leaves come out and the forest floor is covered in them and the light comes through in fragments."
She was watching him.
"You've been reading about dhok trees," she said.
"I've been reading about everything," he said. He looked at his coffee. "Since March. Everything about that landscape. The trees. The animals. The geology. The seasonal patterns. The specific composition of the bird population at different times of year."
"Since March," she said.
"Since the Bombay car," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"Show me what you've read," she said. "Tonight. When we come back. Show me what you've been reading."
"You've been reading too," he said. "Don't tell me you haven't."
"I've been reading eleven books and seventeen research papers," she said. "Since Ranthambore."
"Since I said Ranthambore," he said.
"Yes," she said.
They looked at each other across the breakfast table.
"We're ridiculous," she said.
"We're well-prepared," he said.
"We've been secretly preparing for a holiday that neither of us knew was the same holiday," she said. "That is the definition of ridiculous."
"Or the definition of compatible," he said.
She looked at him.
"Also that," she said.
She picked up her filter coffee.
"Tell me about the tigers," she said.
The Land Rover arrived at the Rambagh Palace at eight-thirty.
Hamid was a compact man of fifty who had the quality of someone who had spent his adult life driving people through the Ranthambore landscape — a quality that was the quality of a man who had been in the presence of something significant for so long that the significance had become intimate rather than distant. He did not perform his knowledge. He simply had it, in the way that people who had spent decades in a place had it.
Sakshi shook his hand, which was not the standard expectation and which Hamid received with the equanimity of a man accustomed to the unexpected varieties of people who came to Ranthambore.
"Hamid sahab," she said. "How long have you been driving these roads?"
"Thirty-one years, madam," he said. "My father drove before me. My son now also drives."
"How many tigers have you seen?"
"Many hundreds, madam. Each one different."
"What is the most beautiful thing you have seen in Ranthambore?"
He thought about this with the seriousness of a man who understood that the question deserved a serious answer. "A tigress," he said. "Her name — the forest department named her Machali because she was like a fish in the lakes. She crossed the Raj Bagh Talao in the monsoon, swimming, with her three cubs, each one swimming behind her. The monsoon rain was coming down. The lake surface was broken with the rain. The four of them — she and the three cubs — crossing the grey water with the rain coming down." He paused. "I have seen that thing many times in my mind since I saw it. I see it when I sleep."
Sakshi looked at him for a moment.
Then she looked at Karan.
"I want to see something like that today," she said.
"The tigers are there," Hamid said simply. "Whether we see them is their decision."
"An honest answer," she said. She got into the Land Rover. "I respect that."
The road from Jaipur to Sawai Madhopur was three hours of the specific landscape of eastern Rajasthan — not the desert of the west, not the flat agricultural land of the north, but the landscape of the Aravallis and their eastern foothills, which was rocky and undulating and covered in the dry deciduous forest that was the specific ecosystem of this part of India.
Sakshi had her window down from the moment they left the city.
The wind in the window was the August wind of Rajasthan post-monsoon — warm, with the specific smell of wet rock and vegetation that had been baked dry and rained on and was processing both experiences simultaneously. She had her hand out the window in the way that people put their hands in moving air when they want to feel it rather than just be moved through it, the fingers spread, the palm cupped against the flow.
"The smell," she said, to no one specifically.
"Petrichor," he said.
"What?"
"Petrichor. The smell after rain on dry earth. It's a specific compound — geosmin — produced by bacteria in the soil when rain releases it. The reason rain on dry earth smells the way it does."
She turned her head from the window and looked at him.
"Geosmin," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"You know what the smell is called," she said.
"I looked it up in April," he said. "The Ranthambore ecosystem research. The soil biology chapter."
She looked at him for a moment.
"You are the most thorough person I have ever encountered," she said.
"I prefer prepared," he said.
"I know you do," she said. "But in this case I want to use my word." She turned back to the window. "Geosmin." She said it as though testing whether the word did justice to the smell. "It doesn't smell like a word."
"No," he said. "The word is not the thing."
"The word never is," she said. She had her hand back in the wind. "That's the problem with most things. The word organises the experience and in organising it reduces it." She paused. "How do you talk about something without reducing it?"
"You don't," he said. "Or you talk about it in the way that poetry works — not describing the thing but building the conditions in which the thing can be felt."
She turned from the window.
"That's very good," she said.
"I'm quoting someone," he said.
"Who?"
"Tagore," he said. "In a different context, but that's the implication."
She smiled. "We have Tagore in the Land Rover on the way to Ranthambore," she said. "On our holiday."
"Our trip," he said.
"Our trip," she agreed. "Where we are going to see land you bought in June."
"You know it was June now," he said.
"I know many things," she said. "I've been watching you be secretive for five months. The way you have been secretive has been very informative."
"What did my secrecy tell you?" he said.
She thought about this. "That it was something large," she said. "Because you didn't ask me anything — you didn't ask what kind of house I'd like or what landscape I preferred. You made decisions without input. Which means you were working from information you already had. Which means it was something you had already understood about what I wanted before you started."
He said nothing.
"Which means," she said, "it was something that came from things I had already said to you. Not a general project. A specific response to something specific I said."
She turned and looked at him directly.
Outside the window, the landscape had changed — they were deeper into the Aravallis now, the hills closer, the forest denser, the road narrower and more intimate. The dhok forest was everywhere — Karan had described it and now she was seeing it, the pale-barked, small-leaved trees covering the hillsides in the grey-green she had read about in none of his books but that she recognised immediately as the right colour for this landscape.
The gate at the end of the dirt track was iron and old and heavy with the specific weight of something that had been part of a working farm for three generations and had absorbed that history into its hinges and its rust and the specific way it resisted the key before yielding to it.
Karan unlocked it.
He pushed it open.
It swung with a sound — the specific groan-and-clang of old iron moving on old hinges in the morning heat — that was the sound of something beginning.
Sakshi was standing beside him.
She looked at the gate.
She looked at what was on the other side of the gate — the dirt track running into the dhok forest, the specific morning light coming through the trees, the grass long and wet from the August monsoon, a bird singing from somewhere inside the forest that she couldn't identify from the sound alone.
She looked at the gate one more time.
Then she walked through it.
She walked through it without waiting for the Land Rover, without waiting for Karan, the way you walked through a door you had been waiting for without knowing you were waiting for it.
He watched her.
She walked ten metres into the land and stopped and stood.
He came to stand beside her.
The morning around them: the bird still singing, closer now, a melodic repetitive call that she recognised after a moment as the Coppersmith Barbet, the bird that hammered its note into the forest air. The smell — geosmin, wet rock, the specific vegetable smell of the forest undergrowth after rain. The light through the dhoks: fragmented, falling in pieces between the leaves, the specific broken-up morning light of a forest that had small leaves and spaces between them.
"How much?" she said.
"Twelve thousand acres," he said.
She was still.
"How far?" she said.
"The furthest boundary is seven kilometres from where we're standing," he said.
She looked at the forest in front of her. At the hills visible between the trees. At the specific quality of the land that extended into the morning in all directions without an edge she could see.
"Seven kilometres," she said.
"In that direction," he said, pointing east, "three kilometres to the Ranthambore reserve boundary. The reserve begins there and the tigers range freely across it."
She turned east.
She looked in the direction he had pointed.
She looked for a long time.
Then she said, very quietly: "Is this ours?"
"Yes," he said.
She turned and looked at him.
Her face had the expression she had when something was too large to be processed immediately, when the processing was happening and the expression was the placeholder for the processing — not quite believing, not disbelieving, in the specific suspended state of someone who has been told something true that they had not known to expect.
"You bought twelve thousand acres," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Adjacent to the tiger reserve," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Because I said something in a Bombay car in March," she said.
"Because you were right," he said. "You were right about what was missing. And I built what was missing."
She looked at him for a long moment.
Then she did something unexpected.
She laughed.
Not the social laugh, not the polite laugh — the real one, the one that came from somewhere genuine and that she almost never produced in company because she was reserved about it, because the real laugh was the private one, the one that appeared when something was genuinely funny or genuinely wonderful or both simultaneously.
"Twelve thousand acres," she said, still laughing. "Karan, most men give their wives flowers. Or jewellery. You gave me twelve thousand acres of Rajasthan."
"You didn't want flowers," he said.
"I didn't ask for anything," she said.
"You said what you wanted," he said. "Precisely. I built it."
She looked at him with the laugh still in her face, the expression of someone who finds a person both infuriating and wonderful in equal measure and has found that the combination is exactly correct.
"Come," she said. She took his hand. "Show me everything."
They walked the first section on foot.
Hamid stayed with the Land Rover, which was correct — this was not a guided tour. This was two people walking through land that was theirs.
The dhok forest had the quality that Karan had described and that she could now confirm from the inside: the trees were not tall, not dense in the way of a tropical forest, but they were present in every direction, their pale bark catching the morning light, their small leaves making a sound in the slight breeze that was softer than the sound of large leaves — a murmur rather than a rustle, the sound of a large number of small things responding to the same air.
A family of spotted deer appeared between the trees.
Not one, not two — a group of seven. A male with his antlers in velvet — the August growth, not yet hardened into the weapon they would become by October — and six females, two of them with calves. They appeared from between the trees and saw the two humans and made the specific assessment of deer: threat or not? They stood absolutely still for approximately four seconds.
Sakshi went completely still.
Karan went completely still beside her.
The deer stared.
Sakshi and Karan stared back.
One of the calves, apparently not having received the message about stillness, took two steps toward them with the specific curiosity of something young enough not to yet understand why its mother had stopped.
Its mother's head swung toward it.
The calf stopped.
The standoff lasted thirty seconds.
Then the male deer made the decision — a slight shift of his weight, a turn of his head, the specific body language of a deer that has assessed and found non-threatening — and the group dissolved back into the trees as quietly as they had appeared, the calves close at their mothers' sides, the male stepping last.
"Chital," Sakshi said. Very quietly. "Seven of them."
"Yes," he said. Also quietly.
"On our land," she said.
"On their land," he said. "That we happen to own."
She looked at him.
"Yes," she said. "That's the correct way to say it." She looked at where the deer had disappeared. "The reserve doesn't begin at the boundary. It begins here. The deer don't know where the boundary is."
"No," he said.
"The tigers will follow the deer," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"The tigers are already coming to this land," she said. "Not because we invited them. Because the deer are here and this is where the tigers hunt."
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the forest.
"We don't need to bring tigers," she said. "We need to make this land good enough for the tigers that are already ranging here."
"That's the programme," he said.
"Tell me the programme," she said.
"All of it?" he said.
"Everything," she said. "Tell me what you've been building since March."
He began to tell her.
They walked east as he talked.
The programme had started with the research — eleven books and seventeen papers on her side, the soil surveys and hydrology assessments and wildlife corridor reports on his — and had become specific as the land acquisition completed in July. He had been working through Ranjit Kumar on the physical side: the survey of the land, the assessment of what was already there, the identification of what needed to be done to make the reserve viable.
He told her about the white tiger cubs as they walked.
She stopped walking.
She stopped completely and turned and looked at him with an expression that was doing too many things simultaneously to parse — the surprise, the disbelief, the specific emotion of someone receiving news they had not known to hope for.
"Say that again," she said.
"The Rewa captive breeding programme," he said. "They have two cubs — born in June — available for placement. One male, one female, from the same litter. The placement requires a site assessment that establishes appropriate habitat. I've been in conversation with the Rewa programme director since April."
"You've been in conversation with the Rewa programme director since April," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"About white tiger cubs," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"While building an aircraft," she said. "And managing an oil programme. And handling the nuclear test data systems. And—"
"The conversations were brief," he said. "Three letters and two phone calls."
She looked at him.
"Three letters," she said.
"The letters required more care," he said.
She was quiet for a long moment.
The forest was quiet around them. A Coppersmith Barbet was still hammering its note somewhere above. From somewhere further away — the distance made it uncertain — there was the sound of something moving through undergrowth. Large. Deliberate. The sound of an animal that was not small.
They both went still.
The sound stopped.
Then it resumed, moving away from them, the specific fading quality of a large animal choosing a different direction.
Sakshi let out a breath.
"What was that?" she said. Very quietly.
"Sambar deer," Hamid said from behind them. He had appeared silently on the track. "Very large sambar. Male. He heard you."
"He was close," Sakshi said.
"Twenty metres," Hamid said. "In the undergrowth to the right. You didn't see him because the light is wrong. He was watching you."
Sakshi turned to where Hamid had indicated.
The undergrowth was thick, the monsoon having produced the specific density of August vegetation. She could see nothing.
"He was watching us," she said.
"Yes," Hamid said.
"And then he left," she said.
"He decided we were not interesting," Hamid said. "Or not dangerous. Either is a compliment."
Sakshi turned to Karan.
"This land," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"It's already full," she said. "We don't have to bring anything. It's already full."
"We bring the white tigers," he said.
"The white tigers," she said.
She looked at the forest where the sambar had been.
Then she said: "Tell me their names."
He looked at her.
"They haven't been named yet," he said. "The Rewa programme leaves naming to the placing facility."
She looked at him.
She looked at the forest.
She looked at the twelve thousand acres around her in all directions, the land that was theirs, the land that was full of spotted deer and sambar and sambar watching from twenty metres and Coppersmith Barbets and peacocks in the road at dawn and the distant sound of the reserve and its tigers ranging freely across a boundary that existed only on paper.
"Arjun and Chandra," she said.
He was still.
"After your parents," she said. "Your father's name. And your mother—"
"Leela," he said.
"Chandra," she said. "The moon. For Leela Devi. Not her name but her quality."
He looked at her.
His mother's quality. The woman who had packed parathas for the product launch. Who had ridden the escalator five times. Who had found the medicine drawer at a dinner table. Who had watched twenty-three women open a refrigerator door and determined that twelve of them found the handle wrong.
"Chandra," he said.
"Yes," she said.
"For Amma," he said.
"For Amma," she said. "She deserves a tiger."
He was very still for a moment.
Then he said: "She deserves more than a tiger."
"She has a lake too," Sakshi said. "We'll get to the lake."
He looked at his wife in the August Rajasthan morning, in the forest on their land, naming white tiger cubs after his parents, and he had the specific experience that arrived rarely and was completely disorienting when it did: the experience of his own life exceeding his capacity to fully comprehend it.
He reached for her hand.
She gave it.
They continued walking.
The land took the whole of the morning to traverse even partially.
They did it in two modes: walking where the terrain permitted, in the Land Rover where the forest was too dense or the rock too rough. The two modes produced different things. Walking produced the close-up — the small animals, the birds in the trees, the specific smell of each different section of the land, the variety of soil and rock and vegetation that twelve thousand acres of Rajasthan contained. The Land Rover produced the panoramic — the view from the rises, the shape of the land as it moved between the hill sections and the open areas, the geography of it.
In the first hour they saw: the spotted deer family. The sambar they heard but did not see. A family of langur monkeys in a cluster of dhok trees — six adults and three infants, the infants moving with the specific uncoordinated energy of young things that had not yet understood that movement required intention. A mongoose running across the track at speed, going somewhere. Four peacocks on the hillside to the north, the males with their tails in the half-open position of peacocks that were not displaying but were considering it.
In the second hour: a crested serpent eagle perched on a dead tree at the top of a rise, watching the grassland below. A pair of Indian rollers — the birds that were the specific Rajasthan blue, the blue that painters tried to capture and did not quite — in the open section of the track. A monitor lizard sunning on a rock, approximately a metre long, that regarded them without moving as the Land Rover passed two metres from it and then resumed its sunning.
"The monitor lizard did not give a single thing about us," Sakshi said.
"No," Karan said.
"I respect that enormously," she said.
"The monitor has been managing this rock probably before we bought the land," he said.
"The monitor has been managing this rock probably since before the Singhania family arrived in 1910," she said. "Monitor lizards live twenty-five years. This one has been doing exactly what it's doing in that same patch of morning sun possibly since before independence."
"And will be doing it after us," he said.
"Continuity," she said. "The monitor is the continuity."
In the third hour they found the rocky outcropping section in the eastern part of the property.
The outcroppings were the specific geology of the Aravallis — pale sandstone boulders that had been pushed through the surface by the geological activity of the range over millions of years, their surfaces worn smooth by centuries of wind and rain, their colours ranging from the pale yellow-pink of the local sandstone to the deep orange of iron-rich sections. They rose in clusters and stacks, some of them head-height, others towering three and four metres above the surrounding land, creating the specific landscape of a rocky hillside that was not mountainous but was structured in a way that gave it vertical dimension.
Sakshi got out of the Land Rover and climbed.
She climbed with the efficiency of someone who had grown up in the hills near Amritsar and for whom rock was familiar territory — finding the footholds, testing the surfaces, moving up the face of a large boulder with the specific body-knowledge of climbing.
Karan watched from below.
"Are you coming?" she called.
"I'm watching you," he called back.
"Come up," she said. "The view is different."
He climbed.
The view from the top of the boulder was different. The land spread below them in the specific way that an elevation change produced — not high enough to see the full twelve thousand acres, but high enough to see the sections they had driven through and the sections they hadn't yet reached, and to understand for the first time the shape of the whole.
"The eastern section is the tiger territory," she said. She was standing on the boulder looking east. "You can see the forest thickening toward the boundary. The dhok gets denser. More shade. More cover."
"Yes," he said.
"And the open section to the north — see the lighter colour? That's the sandy grass. That's the blackbuck habitat."
"Yes," he said.
"And west — the long open section, the grassland."
"The horses," he said.
She turned and looked at him.
"Horses," she said. "Tell me about the horses."
He told her about Harji.
He told her about the Arabian bloodlines in Rajasthan, the lineages that had come with the Mughals and had been maintained in certain Rajput estates, the specific qualities of the Indian Arabian that were different from the Gulf Arabian — adapted to the specific heat and dryness of the Indian landscape while retaining the head carriage and the intelligence and the sensitivity.
He told her about the nucleus herd: twelve horses, six mares, six stallions, four bloodlines. Enough genetic diversity for a sustainable population. The mares from different lineages to prevent inbreeding. The stallions selected for temperament as much as for conformation, because a horse that was beautiful but difficult was a horse that created problems in a mixed herd.
"Twelve horses," she said. She was looking at the western grassland. "In that grassland."
"Yes," he said.
"Running," she said.
"When they've established," he said. "When they know the land."
"How long does it take a horse to know land?" she said.
"A horse that has been handled gently and introduced to a space gradually knows it within a season," he said. "By the following spring, if we bring them in October, they'll know the western section completely. They'll know the water points, the best grass, the shelter in the heat."
She was looking at the western grassland.
"Arabians have a specific way of moving," she said. "They have a high-stepping action. The trot is — there's no other word for it, it's spectacular. Like the horse is deliberately showing you what it can do." She paused. "I watched a Marwari horse — which is related to the Arabian lineage — at a horse fair in Pushkar three years ago. I stood watching it for twenty minutes."
"I didn't know that," he said.
"You can't know everything," she said. She was still looking at the western grassland. "I want to ride them."
"Then we'll build that into the management plan," he said.
"Can I?" she said. "Actually ride them? Not the show-horse thing — actual riding. In that grassland."
"With Harji's supervision while you're learning their temperaments," he said. "And then on your own when you and the horses have established trust."
"How do you establish trust with an Arabian?" she said.
"You spend time with them," he said. "Not purposeful time — not training time. Just time. Being in their space. Learning how they move. Understanding what they're alarmed by and what they're comfortable with. The trust is built before the riding begins."
She looked at him.
"That's good advice for everything," she said.
"Harji told me," he said.
"It's still good advice," she said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"When can we have the first horse here?" she said. "If we start the habitat preparation now."
"October," he said. "Harji wants to come for a full week to assess the land and the grassland management before we bring the horses. After his assessment, the first horses arrive in November."
"I'll come in November," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"I'll come every month," she said.
"I know," he said.
She looked at him. "I said I'll come every month."
"I heard you," he said.
"I mean with you," she said. "Every month, together."
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said. "Every month."
She looked back at the land spread below them from the boulder.
"We should build a watchtower here," she said. "On this rock formation. Not a large structure — something simple. A platform with a railing. You can see in every direction from here."
"The roof terrace will give you the same view from the farmhouse," he said.
"The roof terrace is the farmhouse view," she said. "This is the land view. They're different." She looked at the rock surface under her feet. "Can you build on this rock?"
"With the right anchoring," he said. "The sandstone is solid. The platforms in the Ranthambore reserve — the machaans — are anchored into the rock."
"A machaan," she said. "A machaan on this rock formation." She looked at the view. "At sunset you'd see the tigers moving in the eastern section."
"When the reserve is established," he said.
"When Arjun and Chandra are here," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She was quiet.
Then she said: "I want to be on this machaan at sunset on the day that Arjun and Chandra are released into their territory. When the enclosure gates are opened and they walk out for the first time into the open land."
He looked at her.
"I want to watch that from here," she said.
He said nothing for a moment.
"We'll be here," he said.
She looked at him.
"Promise," she said.
"I promise," he said.
She sat down on the rock.
He sat beside her.
The August morning was fully established now, the heat building toward its midday intensity, but on this elevated rock there was a specific quality of breeze that the lower land didn't have — the air moving through the rock formation in a way that made the heat manageable, that made sitting here in August not uncomfortable. Below them, the land shimmered slightly in the heat haze.
She turned from the east and looked at him.
She looked at him with the full force of whatever she was feeling, and what she was feeling was large and multidimensional and produced in her face the specific expression of someone who is inhabiting the full extent of their own life and finding that the extent is greater than they anticipated.
She put her hands on either side of his face.
She looked at him at close range.
"Do you know what you've done?" she said.
"I bought twelve thousand acres," he said.
"Stop," she said. "Don't make it smaller than it is. Don't make it practical. I'm asking you — do you know what you've done?"
He was quiet.
"You heard one thing I said," she said. "In a car. In March. And you built this." She was holding his face in her hands. "You built a place where tigers are in their territory and horses are in their territory and blackbucks are in their territory and the land is alive in every direction and there is no edge you can see from the middle of it." She paused. "And you named the tigers after your parents."
"You named them," he said.
"You made it possible for them to be named," she said.
They were sitting on the boulder in the August Rajasthan morning and the land extended around them and somewhere in the eastern section a tiger was moving through the dhok forest and the Coppersmith Barbet was hammering its note and the spotted deer had their calves and the monitor lizard was on its rock and the land was full and alive and entirely itself.
He reached up and took her hands from his face and held them.
"I built it for you," he said.
"I know," she said.
"Not for a programme. Not for a strategy. For you."
"I know," she said.
"Is it right?" he said.
She looked at him.
"It's right," she said.
"Twelve thousand acres?" he said.
"Twelve thousand acres," she said. "Yes. All of it. Every rock and every dhok tree and every peacock and every sambar we heard and didn't see and the tiger and Arjun and Chandra who are not here yet and the horses who are not here yet and the lake that doesn't exist yet." She paused. "Especially the lake."
"We haven't seen the lake site yet," he said.
"I know," she said. "Show me."
The lake site was in the middle section of the land where the seasonal stream ran through a narrow valley between two low ridges.
They reached it at eleven.
The stream was narrow — the August rain had come but not heavily enough to bring it up to its full monsoon flow, so it ran as a thread of water in a wide rocky channel, its high-water marks visible on the banks as dark stains above the current waterline. The channel was dry for significant stretches, the water appearing and disappearing as the bedrock geology allowed.
At the narrowest point — where two ridges came together and the valley compressed to perhaps twelve metres — the stream ran clear over a flat rock shelf. The water here was a few centimetres deep and very clear and very cold, a cold that was the cold of water from a deep aquifer, the cold that had been held underground through the summer.
Sakshi waded into it.
She walked out into the middle of the stream in her sandals and stood in the ankle-deep water on the flat rock shelf and looked upstream and downstream.
"Cold," she said.
"Yes," he said. He was on the bank.
"This is the dam site," she said.
"Yes," he said. "The natural geometry—"
"I can see the geometry," she said. "The ridges close here. The valley opens behind." She turned and looked upstream at the opening valley. "The lake will fill back there."
"Yes," he said.
"How deep at the deepest point?" he said.
"The hydrological assessment says four to six metres at the deepest point in the valley bottom," he said.
"And wide?"
"Three hundred metres across at the widest," he said. "The shape is roughly oval. The island—" He stopped.
She turned.
"The island?" she said.
He pointed.
In the middle of the valley that would become the lake, visible now as a slight rise in the ground, was a low hill — not dramatic, perhaps two metres higher than the surrounding ground, perhaps thirty metres across. A cluster of trees had established themselves on it: two jamun trees of significant age, their dark glossy leaves visible from here, and a fig tree — Ficus benghalensis — whose roots had already found the bedrock.
"When the lake fills," he said, "that becomes an island."
She looked at the hill that would be an island.
She was quiet for a long moment.
"Cormorants," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"They'll nest in the jamun trees," she said. "The branches that overhang the water are ideal for cormorant nesting. And painted storks — the fig tree is perfect for painted storks." She was looking at the island hill. "The cormorant colony will be visible from the dam. When the lake is full and the colony is established—"
"You'll see it from the machaan on the rocky outcropping," he said.
She turned and looked at him.
"Yes," she said. "You'll be able to see both — the tiger territory to the east and the lake and the island colony to the middle." She paused. "The machaan sees the whole reserve."
"I thought of that," he said.
"When?" she said.
"When I stood on that rock at dawn this morning," he said. "I stood on it and looked at the land and thought about where to put the viewing platform, and it was the obvious site because the line of sight covers the most important sections simultaneously."
She was standing in the stream looking at him on the bank.
"Come in," she said.
"The water—" he started.
"Karan," she said.
He took off his shoes and came into the stream.
The water was cold in the way that was a shock even after you'd heard it described as cold — the specific cold of deep aquifer water that had not been near the surface and the sun and the August heat. He stood beside her on the flat rock shelf.
The water was the specific cold that was the right temperature for a body that had been walking through the August Rajasthan heat all morning. The flat rock under his feet was smooth and certain. The sound of the water moving around the rock shelf was the sound of moving water, which was one of the best sounds.
"Do you hear that?" she said.
"The water?" he said.
"And the kingfisher," she said.
He listened.
From the stream bank upstream — a branch overhanging the water — there was a call. Small, sharp, the specific metallic call of the Common Kingfisher. He looked and found it on the branch: the impossibly vivid combination of orange and blue, the bird sitting with the absolute stillness of a kingfisher waiting for movement below the surface.
"He's been there since we arrived," she said.
"How do you know?" he said.
"He didn't move when we came in," she said. "A kingfisher that doesn't move when people enter his stream has been there long enough to decide we're not a threat." She was watching the bird. "He's watching the same pool we're standing in."
"We're in his fishing pool," Karan said.
"Yes," she said. "Do you think he minds?"
"He hasn't moved," Karan said.
"He minds but he's patient," she said.
They stood in the stream and the kingfisher waited on his branch and the stream moved around them and the August morning was at its full heat above the water while the water itself was cold and perfect and right.
"The name," she said.
"Chandra Tal," he said.
She turned and looked at him.
"You thought of that," she said. Not accusing him of stealing the idea — recognising that they had arrived at the same place independently.
"In the Land Rover," he said.
"I was going to say it at the lake site," she said. "I had it prepared."
"I know," he said. "I know you."
She looked at him.
"Chandra Tal," she said.
"For Amma," he said.
"For Leela Devi," she said. "Who found the medicine drawer at the dinner table. Who watched twenty-three women open a refrigerator and counted the ones who struggled. Who is the most practically observant person I have ever met."
"She is," he said.
"She deserves a lake," Sakshi said. "When the lake is full and the painted storks are on the island and the cormorant colony is established—"
"We bring her," he said.
"We bring all of them," she said. "Your mother and your father and Aditya. We stand on the dam and look at the island and the lake and we say: this is Chandra Tal. Named for Leela Devi."
"She'll say something practical," he said.
"She'll say the dam looks well-built," Sakshi said. "She'll assess the construction quality and say the mortar joints are good or bad and she'll ask how deep the foundation is."
"And then she'll see the painted storks," he said.
"And she'll be very quiet," Sakshi said.
"Yes," he said.
"And your father," she said.
"He'll walk around the edge of the lake," Karan said. "All the way around. He'll walk the whole perimeter without saying anything."
"And at the end he'll say one thing," she said.
"One true thing," he said. "Whatever he's understood from the walking."
"And Aditya," she said.
"Notebook," they said simultaneously.
She laughed.
He laughed.
They were standing in an ankle-deep stream in Rajasthan in August laughing about his family coming to see the lake that would be named for his mother, and the kingfisher was still on the branch, and the land extended in every direction in the morning heat, and it was theirs.
They ate lunch at the farmhouse.
The farmhouse was in the middle section of the property — built on a slight rise, which was why it was there: the Singhania family had positioned their farmhouse on the highest available ground in the middle section, which was the sensible position of people who understood their land, who wanted to see in every direction and who wanted to be seen from every direction, who wanted the wind to flow through rather than be blocked.
The farmhouse itself was everything the brief description in the land file had suggested and more in the specific way that things always were more when you stood in front of them.
Stone walls — the pale sandstone, sixty centimetres thick at the base. The facade was simple and honest: the entrance arch with its keystone, the windows with their deep reveals (because thick walls meant deep reveals, which meant shade inside the window embrasures), the roofline with its parapet. Three generations of the Singhania family had looked out of those windows at this land.
The courtyard was the revelation.
It was not large — fifteen by twelve metres — but it was proportioned with the specific correctness of a space that had been designed by people who understood proportion without knowing the word. The neem tree was old — its trunk was thirty centimetres in diameter, its canopy covering most of the courtyard floor, its leaves making the specific dappled light of a neem tree in August. The well was in the corner, dry but intact, the stone rim worn smooth where a thousand hands had gripped it.
Sakshi stood in the courtyard for a long time without speaking.
Karan stood near the entrance and let her.
She touched the neem tree's trunk. She looked at the well. She walked to the far corner and turned and looked at the entrance arch with the tree in the foreground and the sky above the parapet wall visible beyond.
"The neem tree stays," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Everything else can change," she said. "The rooms can be opened or closed. The windows can be enlarged. The roofline can have the terrace. But the neem tree and the well stay exactly as they are."
"Yes," he said.
"And the stone," she said. "The walls stay exactly as they are. We don't refinish them, we don't repaint them. This stone has been here for at least sixty years and it looks it and I want it to continue looking it."
"Yes," he said.
"A pale lime wash if anything," she said. "If the stone needs protection. The original colour. Not white."
"Yes," he said.
She came to stand in the centre of the courtyard under the neem tree.
"Sit," she said.
He sat on the stone bench that ran along the east wall of the courtyard — it had been there long enough to have a slight depression where generations of the Singhania family had sat.
She sat beside him.
The neem tree above them. The dappled light. The August heat, but the thick stone walls and the neem's canopy making the courtyard perhaps eight degrees cooler than the land outside the walls. The well in the corner. The three-hundred-year smell of a space that had been lived in — not the smell of neglect but the specific smell of a place that has been inhabited continuously and carries its history in the air.
"Lunch," Sakshi said.
Hamid had arranged for a tiffin from a place in Sawai Madhopur — a family that made home food for people who needed meals on the road. It arrived in stainless steel containers: dal, rice, sabzi, roti, a small container of mango pickle.
They ate in the courtyard under the neem tree.
The food was the food of the region — not elaborate, not restaurant food, the food of a household that cooked every day for people who needed to eat. The dal had the specific quality that dal had when made in a kitchen that had made it every day for years: a depth of flavour that came not from complexity but from consistency, from a tarka that had been executed the same way so many times that the oil remembered what to do.
Sakshi ate three helpings of the dal.
"The fireplace," she said, between the second and third helping.
"In the main bedroom," he said.
"In every bedroom," she said.
"How many bedrooms?" he said.
"Three," she said. "One that is ours. One for family. One for guests." She paused. "Three fireplaces."
"Rajasthan winters are cold," he said.
"I know," she said. "The December nights here are cold in a specific way — dry cold, not damp cold like the UP winter. Clear and cold. The kind of cold that makes the stars very bright." She was eating her dal. "On December nights the fire in the bedroom will be—" She stopped. "And the fire pit in the courtyard."
He looked at the courtyard.
"The fire pit," he said. "Where?"
"Here," she said. She pointed at the centre of the courtyard, a few metres from the neem tree. "Stone surround. Wood fire. In December we sit around it in the courtyard and above us the sky is — Rajasthan has no light pollution here. The sky is complete."
He looked at the centre of the courtyard.
"And the sound from the eastern section," she said.
"The tigers," he said.
"The tigers calling in the night," she said. "From the eastern section. The specific distance — far enough to be sound, close enough to be present. You hear it and you know they're there."
"The right distance," he said.
She looked at him.
"Yes," she said. "That's what I want. The right distance. Close enough to be real, distant enough to be theirs."
He looked at the neem tree.
"The roof terrace," she said.
"On the main roof," he said. "Wide enough for four chairs comfortably. Open on all four sides — no roof, no shade structure. The stars."
"The stars," she said.
"And the land in every direction," he said. "From the roof terrace at the right height you can see the eastern ridge. When the tigers are in the eastern section in the morning light—"
"I'll see them from the terrace," she said.
"If they're in the open," he said.
"They'll be in the open," she said. "In the early morning. Tigers move in the early morning before the heat. In the low light on the eastern grass, with the ridge behind them—" She stopped. "When can we build the terrace?"
"The farmhouse restoration," he said. "March. It will be done by March 1975."
"March 1975," she said.
"The full reserve — the dam, the lake, the tiger territory preparation, the horse paddock, the blackbuck population installation — that's December through February," he said. "The farmhouse is the last element because it needs to be done properly and it needs to wait until the major ground works are complete."
"The first full stay," she said. "April 1975. When everything is established. Before the summer heat."
"April 1975," he said.
"The lake will be full from the monsoon," she said. "The birds will be establishing the colony. Arjun and Chandra will be eight months in their territory. The horses will know their land."
"And the blackbucks will have had one breeding season," he said.
"How many will there be?" she said.
"The initial population is twelve," he said. "If breeding goes well in the first season, twenty to twenty-five by April."
"Twenty blackbucks in the northern grassland," she said.
"In the dawn light," he said.
She was quiet.
He watched her face as she built the picture of the April morning — the lake and the birds and the tigers and the horses and the blackbucks and the fire pit ash cold in the morning courtyard and the roof terrace with the view of the eastern ridge.
"I want a pair of binoculars," she said.
"They're in the Land Rover," he said.
She looked at him.
"You brought binoculars," she said.
"Hamid recommended it," he said.
"For this afternoon?" she said.
"For always," he said. "There will be a pair at the farmhouse permanently. In a specific place, at the specific height of the window in the main bedroom, oriented toward the eastern section."
She was very still.
"There is a specific place," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"That you've thought about," she said.
"Yes," he said. "The window of the main bedroom faces east. It's the correct window. The binoculars on the windowsill, ready, because the morning is when the eastern section is most active and you shouldn't have to look for binoculars in the morning."
She looked at him for a long time.
"You have thought about every detail," she said.
"Not all of them," he said. "You're giving me many of them today."
"I'm giving you the ones about living here," she said. "You gave me the ones about building here. Together—"
"Together it's complete," he said.
She looked at the neem tree.
Then she leaned into him — not slightly, the way she had in the Land Rover, but fully, her shoulder against his, her head tilting toward his shoulder. He put his arm around her.
They sat in the courtyard under the neem tree in the August afternoon, the stone around them sixty years old and holding the cool, the neem above dappling the light, the dal finished and the containers beside them and the Rajasthan afternoon stretching outside the courtyard walls.
From the eastern direction — very far, barely audible — the tiger called once.
Neither of them moved.
"Still there," she said.
"Still there," he said.
She was quiet for a long time.
"Karan," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"I need to say something to you," she said.
"Say it," he said.
She was quiet for a moment. She was choosing words carefully — she always chose words carefully, but this was the more careful kind, the kind that came before something that mattered.
"You build extraordinary things," she said. "I know that. I have watched you build them for four years. The aircraft — which is genuinely extraordinary, whatever I said about it in comparison to the tigers, which I will take back partially. The oil. The LED. The things I don't fully understand — the semiconductor, the computing. The tank. All of it." She paused. "You build extraordinary things and you build them at a speed and a scale that — that no one in this country has built at this speed and this scale. I know this. I have watched it and I know what it means."
She paused.
"And none of it," she said, "none of it has ever made me feel the way that this afternoon has made me feel. Not the aircraft. Not the nuclear test. Not any of it."
He was quiet.
"Because this," she said, "is something you built because you heard me. Not because India needed it. Not because the strategy required it. Because I said one thing in one car and you heard it and you built the exact thing I had described without knowing I was describing it."
She looked at him.
"That is the most extraordinary thing you have ever done," she said. "And I want you to know that I know it."
He held her.
Not with words — there were no words for this that were correct. He held her in the courtyard under the neem tree and the August afternoon continued around them, unhurried, the way August afternoons in Rajasthan continued — with the specific authority of a season that was not going to be rushed.
After a long time, she said: "The blackbucks."
"Yes?" he said.
"Can we see the northern section this afternoon?" she said.
"Yes," he said.
"And the western section — where the horses will be?"
"Yes," he said.
"And the eastern section as close as Hamid is comfortable going?" she said.
"He said he'll take us to within five hundred metres of the reserve boundary," he said.
"Good," she said.
She stood up.
She held her hand out.
He took it.
They walked out of the courtyard into the Rajasthan afternoon.
The afternoon took three hours.
The northern section first. The sandy grassland was exactly what she had identified from the boulder — pale sandy soil, the grass shorter here and drier, the vegetation different from the dhok forest, more open, more exposed. The light was different here too: harder, less filtered, the full afternoon sun without the partial shade of the forest.
Two jackals were there.
A pair, moving through the grass together with the specific loping gait of jackals — not hurried, not running, the specific efficient movement of animals that covered ground at their own pace and knew what they were looking for.
Sakshi watched them from the Land Rover.
"They're hunting," she said.
"Or patrolling," Hamid said. "The jackal pair — they will have a den somewhere in the rocky section. This is their grassland. They come here in the afternoon when the heat has driven the small prey into the open."
"The blackbucks," she said.
"The blackbucks are too fast for the jackals," Hamid said. "The jackals take the chicks of ground-nesting birds. The mice. The young of the small deer sometimes." He paused. "But the blackbuck is safe from jackals."
"What hunts the blackbuck?" she said.
"The cheetah used to," Hamid said. "Before the cheetah was gone." He said this with the specific quality of someone noting an absence that was both factual and sorrowful. "Now the tiger takes them. And the leopard."
"There are leopards?" she said.
"There are leopards," Hamid said. "Less visible than tigers. The leopard moves in the night primarily. You see the pugmark more than the leopard."
She turned to Karan.
"Leopards," she said.
"On the land already," he said. "The leopard uses the rocky outcroppings."
"On the same outcroppings," she said.
"The leopard and the tiger have separate territories," he said. "The tiger claims the valley and the forest. The leopard uses the high rocky ground. They avoid each other by occupying different elevations."
"The machaan on the rock formation," she said.
"You might see a leopard from the machaan," he said.
"Of course I might see a leopard from the machaan," she said. "Of course." She was shaking her head slightly at the specific comprehensiveness of what was on this land. "What else is here that you haven't told me?"
He thought.
"Wolves," he said.
"Indian wolves?" she said.
"Yes," he said. "The Ranthambore area has a small wolf population. They range widely. They may use our land — the open sections."
"They're endangered," she said.
"Yes," he said. "The Indian wolf population is — very small now."
"We need to not use this land in ways that drive them out," she said. "The western section — the horse section — will have human presence because of the management. The wolves will avoid that. But the eastern section and the northern section—"
"Minimum human disturbance in those sections," he said.
"We don't manage the northern section for anything," she said. "We let it be what it is. The blackbucks will establish naturally if we don't interfere. The wolves will range through it. The jackals are already there."
"Yes," he said.
"One more thing I want," she said.
"Tell me," he said.
"The sloth bears," she said. "Hamid — are there sloth bears in the Ranthambore reserve?"
"Yes, madam," Hamid said. "The sloth bear comes for the mahua flowers and the termite mounds. The rocky sections are good for the sloth bear."
"Our rocky outcroppings," she said to Karan.
"If we plant mahua trees in the rocky section and leave the termite mounds undisturbed," he said, "the sloth bears will come from the reserve."
"Mahua trees," she said. She turned to Hamid. "How fast does a mahua tree grow?"
"Slow tree, madam," Hamid said. "Ten years before it flowers."
"Plant them now," she said to Karan. "In October. So that by 1984 the sloth bears have a reason to stay."
He looked at her.
"Ten years ahead," he said.
"This is a reserve," she said. "Not a factory. We build for ten years ahead."
"Yes," he said. "Mahua trees in October."
The western section was the open grassland — the largest open section of the land, the long Rajasthan grass that had grown tall in the August rain. The specific quality of long grass in afternoon light: the way it moved in the wind, the collective movement of thousands of stalks in the same direction, the wave that looked like breathing.
Hamid stopped the Land Rover.
Sakshi looked at the grassland.
Then she got out.
She walked into the grass without asking, without explaining — the way she had walked through the gate at the beginning of the day, with the directness of someone responding to something they didn't need to analyse.
The grass was above her waist. She walked into the middle of it and stopped.
She stood with her arms slightly out from her sides, the grass moving around her, the afternoon sun on her face, the land extending in every direction around her.
Karan watched from the Land Rover.
He watched her stand in the grass for a long time.
Then he got out.
He walked into the grass.
He reached her.
They stood together in the middle of the western grassland in the August afternoon, the land in every direction, the horizon not visible from the middle of twelve thousand acres.
"You can't see the edge," she said.
"No," he said.
"From where we're standing," she said.
"No," he said.
She looked at him.
The expression on her face was the one he had been looking for since the Bombay car. The full one. The one that appeared when no one else was watching except the person she wanted to be watching.
He kissed her.
The Rajasthan afternoon was around them and the grass was moving in the slight wind and the land extended in every direction and the tiger had called twice from the eastern section and the kingfisher had been on the branch above the stream and there were leopards on the rocky outcroppings and wolves in the open sections and Arjun and Chandra were in Rewa waiting to be brought here and the Arabian horses were being selected by Harji and the lake didn't exist yet and the farmhouse roof terrace didn't exist yet and none of it was yet except this: the two of them standing in the grass in the afternoon light with the land around them that was theirs.
When she pulled back she looked at him.
"Good," she said.
He looked at her.
"Good?" he said.
"I'm saying good to all of it," she said. "To the land and the lake and the tigers and the horses and the fireplace and the roof terrace and Arjun and Chandra and Chandra Tal and all of it." She paused. "Good."
"Good," he confirmed.
She looked at the grassland.
"The horses will be here by November," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"The first one I want to see in this grass," she said. "The first morning — when the horses have been here one full night and I come out at dawn and see one of them standing in this grass in the early light."
"We'll be here for that," he said.
"In November," she said.
"November," he said.
She looked at the grass one more time.
Then she took his hand and they walked back to the Land Rover through the waist-high August grass, the land around them in every direction, the horizon invisible from where they were standing.
They had dinner on the way back to Sawai Madhopur.
A dhaba on the road — two tables outside, a wood fire, a man who had been making dal baati for twenty years at this specific spot on this specific road and who did not find it remarkable that a Land Rover had stopped and two people were sitting at his table in the August evening.
The dal baati was the best they had eaten all day, which was the specific quality of roadside food prepared by someone who had made the same dish every day for twenty years and for whom every batch was not a performance but a continuation.
Sakshi ate with the appetite of someone who had spent eight hours in the field.
The evening around them was the Rajasthan evening — the specific blue-dark that arrived quickly and completely, the stars appearing in their full complement above the rim of the hills, the wood fire smell of the dhaba's cooking mixing with the petrichor that was still faintly in the air from the morning's rain.
"The wolves," she said.
"Yes?" he said.
"I want to see if there are recent wolf signs on the land," she said. "Next visit. Hamid can track — can he track?"
"He knows the land," he said.
"Pugmarks," she said. "Wolf pugmarks in the sandy sections. If the wolves are ranging through the northern section they'll leave signs in the sand."
"Next visit," he said.
"When?" she said.
"October," he said. "We're back for the dam site preparation and the tiger territory survey. When the Rewa programme conducts the site assessment."
"I'll meet the site assessors," she said.
He looked at her.
"I'm coming for the site assessment," she said. "Arjun and Chandra are — they're going to be ours. I want to meet the people who are evaluating whether we're suitable for them."
"Yes," he said.
"I want them to meet me," she said. "Not as a spouse of the person who bought the land. As—" She paused. "As the person who named them and who is going to be in the machaan the day they're released into their territory."
He held her gaze.
"Yes," he said.
"Good," she said. She returned to her dal baati. "The binoculars you said are in the Land Rover."
"Yes," he said.
"Can we go back?" she said.
He looked at her.
It was eight in the evening. It was the August dark. They were twenty minutes from Sawai Madhopur and the comfort of the night's accommodation.
"Back to the land?" he said.
"To the eastern boundary," she said. "Hamid said the tigers sometimes call at dusk and again at nine when they begin hunting." She looked at him with the expression she had when she had already decided what she wanted to do and was presenting it as a question as a courtesy. "I want to hear it again. From the boundary."
He looked at her.
"Hamid," he said.
"Sahab," Hamid said.
"Back to the eastern boundary," he said.
"Yes, sahab," Hamid said, without any particular inflection — the specific equanimity of a man who had been driving people to the forest boundary at night for thirty-one years and for whom this was entirely within the normal range of requests.
Sakshi looked at Karan.
"Thank you," she said.
"Don't thank me," he said. "It was obvious."
"Nothing is obvious," she said. "You choose everything." She paused. "That's what I mean. The choosing."
The dhaba owner came to clear the plates.
"Is the forest good this year?" Sakshi asked him.
He looked at her.
"The forest is good every year," he said. "The forest doesn't know about good and bad years. The forest is what it is."
She looked at him.
"That's the wisest thing I've heard today," she said.
He took the plates and returned to his fire.
At the eastern boundary of the land, in the Land Rover with the engine off and the windows down, at nine-fifteen at night, they waited.
The dark was the full dark of a place that was not lit by any city. The stars were everything they were in Rajasthan on a clear August night — the complete distribution of them, the Milky Way's specific arc, the stars that were not visible near cities and that existed only in this kind of dark.
Sakshi had the binoculars but there was nothing to see. The dark was complete. What there was to do was listen.
The forest night was different from the forest day. The day had the Coppersmith Barbet and the distant calls of the larger birds and the occasional crashing movement of large animals through undergrowth. The night had different sounds: the churring of the nightjar — the specific mechanical sound of a nightjar, like a distant engine idling — the occasional bark of the spotted deer that served as alarm calls, the insect chorus that came in layers, each species at its own frequency, building into the composite sound of a forest night.
They sat in the Land Rover and listened.
Twenty minutes of listening.
Then, from the eastern direction, the call came.
Deep. Resonant. Carrying through the night air with the authority of something that used all the available space.
The tiger calling.
It was closer than the morning call. The tiger had moved in the course of the day — had covered its range, as tigers did, and was now in the section closest to the boundary, its call arriving with the clarity of something nearby rather than something distant.
Sakshi reached for his hand.
He took it.
They sat in the Land Rover in the complete dark with the forest around them and the tiger calling at some distance that was close enough to feel real and far enough to leave it in its own world, and neither of them spoke.
The call came twice more.
Then it moved — the direction changed, the call becoming slightly less clear, the tiger moving along some path that was the tiger's path and not theirs.
Then silence.
The nightjar resumed.
The insect chorus continued.
Sakshi let out a slow breath.
"The right distance," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"That's the right distance," she said.
He held her hand in the dark.
"The distance will be like this when Arjun and Chandra are in their territory," he said. "Close enough to hear. Their land, not yours. The right distance."
She was quiet.
"Yes," she said.
They sat for another ten minutes in the dark, listening to the forest night. The nightjar. The deer. The insects. The specific complete sensory reality of being in a place at night when the place was fully alive and you were inside it.
Then she said: "We can go back now."
They drove back through the Rajasthan dark.
At the Sawai Madhopur guesthouse — a small property that was not the Rambagh Palace but that had the quality of a place that understood its function and performed it correctly — they sat on the verandah after dinner with the chai that the guesthouse served and the night around them.
Sakshi had her notebook.
She was writing the development plan.
She had been writing it since before dinner — in the Land Rover, on the way back, the small light of a pocket torch over her notebook, Karan watching her from his seat. She wrote with the speed of someone who had been building this document in her mind since March and was now transferring it to paper.
He watched her write.
"The blackbuck programme," she said, without looking up. "First population — where do we source them? Tal Chhapar has been doing successful population management. The wildlife biology contacts I've made through the Bombay Natural History Society — can Ranjit Kumar arrange an introduction to the Tal Chhapar management?"
"I'll have him do it next week," Karan said.
"And the fig trees for the island," she said. "Ficus benghalensis from where?"
"There's a nursery in Kota," he said. "Ranjit Kumar identified it. They have large specimens — not seedlings. You can buy a fig tree that's already established."
"How large?" she said.
"Three to four metres," he said. "The Island — it needs trees that will create structure for the cormorants within two seasons. Seedlings will take too long."
"Large specimens," she said. "Even if they're expensive."
"They're not particularly expensive," he said.
"Good," she said. She wrote. "And the mahua trees for the rocky section — from the same nursery?"
"Hamid knows a supplier," he said.
"Can Hamid manage the initial planting?" she said. "He knows the land. He knows where the rocky sections are and which specific outcroppings the sloth bears are most likely to use based on his thirty-one years in this area."
"I'll ask him tomorrow morning," Karan said.
She wrote.
Then she stopped writing and looked at him.
"You planned all of this," she said.
"Not all of it," he said. "You planned significant portions of it today."
"You planned the structure," she said. "The land, the tigers, the horses, Harji. You gave me the structure and I gave you the details."
"The details are the house," he said. "The fireplace and the neem tree and the machaan and the roof terrace and the fire pit in the courtyard and the binoculars on the windowsill. Without the details it's a parcel of land with an animal programme."
"With the details it's a home," she said.
"Yes," he said. "With the details it's a home."
She looked at the notebook.
"I want to write the founding document tonight," she said.
"The founding document?" he said.
"The document that says what Shwet Bagh is," she said. "Not the management plan — that's technical. The other document. The one that says why it exists. The land was always theirs. We are giving it back. And everything else that follows from that."
"Write it," he said.
"Help me," she said.
He looked at her.
"I'm not good at documents that aren't technical," he said.
"Yes, you are," she said. "You're good at saying true things clearly. That's what this is." She opened to a fresh page. "Tell me what this place is. In the fewest possible true words."
He thought.
"It's a place where things exist as themselves," he said. "Where the tiger is a tiger and not an exhibit. Where the horse is a horse and not a performance. Where the land is land that has been here for millions of years and will be here for millions more and we are using it for twenty or thirty or fifty years and then returning it."
She was writing.
"More," she said.
"It's the distance that is right," he said. "Not too close, not too far. Close enough to hear the tiger call and far enough to leave it in its own world."
She wrote.
"More," she said.
"It's a home," he said. "Not a destination. Not a resort. Not a conservation programme. A home that happens to have animals as neighbours, the way a house in Gorakhpur has the city as a neighbour. The animals don't know we're here. We know they're here. The knowing is the gift."
She stopped writing.
She read what she had written.
"That's it," she said. "That's the founding document."
He leaned over and looked at the page.
She had written: Shwet Bagh. Where things exist as themselves. The right distance from everything. A home that happens to have animals as neighbours. The knowing is the gift. The land was always theirs. We are giving it back.
He looked at it for a moment.
"Yes," he said. "That's it."
She closed the notebook.
The Sawai Madhopur night was the night of a small town in Rajasthan in August — the specific quiet of a place that was genuinely quiet, not the managed quiet of a retreat or the forced quiet of a place that had suppressed its natural sounds but the actual quiet of a place that was simply not loud at this hour. The stars were visible above the guesthouse roofline. The chai was finished. The night was warm and close but not uncomfortably warm, the August heat having lost its midday edge.
Sakshi said: "When we bring your mother here for the first time."
"Yes?" he said.
"When she sees the peacocks," she said.
"She'll try to feed them," he said. "She'll have something in her bag."
"She always has something in her bag," Sakshi said. "She will produce something — a piece of roti, maybe, or the sweet saunf she carries — and she will put it on the ground near the peacock and the peacock will come and eat it and she will be extremely pleased with herself and tell everyone about it for approximately six months."
He almost laughed.
"Yes," he said.
"And your father will walk the perimeter of Chandra Tal," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"And when he comes back from the walk he'll say one thing," she said. "What will he say?"
Karan thought about it.
"He'll say: it looks like it was always here," he said.
She was quiet.
"That's the highest praise he could give," she said.
"Yes," he said. "He values things that look as though they belong."
"Because they do belong," she said. "The lake will belong to that valley the moment it fills. It was always going to be a lake — the geology was waiting for a dam."
"The geology was waiting for a dam," he said.
"Yes," she said.
He looked at the stars above the guesthouse roofline.
"We need to start the dam in October," he said. "If we start in October, the first rains next July will begin filling it. By August 1975—"
"Full," she said. "By August 1975, Chandra Tal is full."
"And the painted storks are on the island," he said.
"And the cormorant colony is established," she said.
"And Arjun and Chandra are in their territory," he said.
"And the horses know their grassland," she said.
"And the blackbucks have had their first breeding season," he said.
"And the wolf pugmarks are in the sand of the northern section," she said.
"And the machaan on the rocky outcropping is built," he said.
"And the roof terrace on the farmhouse is built," he said.
"And the fire pit is in the courtyard," she said.
"And the binoculars are on the windowsill," he said.
"And the neem tree is exactly as it is tonight," she said.
They looked at each other.
"August 1975," she said. "We come here for a full week."
"A week," he said.
"No programmes," she said. "No factory visits disguised as trips. A week."
"A week," he said.
"You promise," she said.
"I promise," he said.
She looked at the stars.
"We'll bring Arjun and Leela Devi here before then," she said. "For the day when the lake fills. That specific day — not any day, the day the dam gates close and the water begins to rise. I want the whole family there for that."
"We'll be there," he said.
"All of us," she said.
"All of us," he confirmed.
She looked at the notebook.
"The founding document," she said. "We sign it together."
She opened to the page.
She signed it — her signature, the specific fluid script she had been using since school, the signature of a woman who took the act of signing seriously.
She handed him the pen.
He signed it.
Their signatures on the page, below the words they had written together on the verandah of the Sawai Madhopur guesthouse on the evening of the twenty-fifth of August 1974.
