Chapter 123 - Chapter 123: The Smile Beyond the Sky

The moment the silhouette smiled, something inside Ayan froze.

It wasn't fear.

Not entirely.

Fear was familiar. Fear had accompanied him through monster attacks, dimensional collapses, and the fall of Sector Seven. Fear was something he understood.

This felt different.

Older.

Deeper.

The sensation reminded him of standing at the edge of an ocean and suddenly realizing the water beneath him was far deeper than anyone had imagined.

The world trembled again.

Outside the fortress, terrified screams echoed through the mountains. Refugees rushed through the courtyard while guards attempted to maintain order. Some pointed toward the fractured heavens. Others had fallen to their knees.

Nobody understood what they were seeing.

Ayan wasn't sure he understood either.

The colossal figure remained beyond reality, hidden behind layers of crimson fractures and dimensional distortion. Most of its form remained obscured, but the smile was unmistakable.

And somehow—

That made everything worse.

Because smiles belonged to people.

Monsters bared their teeth.

Predators displayed aggression.

But smiles suggested thought.

Intelligence.

Intent.

The thing beyond the sky wasn't some mindless cosmic force.

It was aware.

Lucien stared upward in silence.

The silver-haired man's expression had become unreadable.

That alone worried Ayan.

Ever since their meeting, Lucien had behaved like someone who already knew the ending of the story. Every crisis seemed predictable to him. Every revelation merely confirmed expectations he already possessed.

Now he looked uncertain.

The sight was deeply unsettling.

For several long moments, nobody spoke.

Then Lucien whispered something.

The words were so quiet that Ayan almost missed them.

"It remembers."

The bridge pulsed violently.

Ayan immediately looked toward him.

"What remembers?"

Lucien didn't answer.

His attention remained fixed on the heavens.

The smile beyond reality slowly widened.

The movement was almost imperceptible.

Yet every person looking upward noticed it.

Because the world reacted.

The crimson fractures stretching across the sky brightened suddenly. Light flooded through the cracks like blood flowing through wounds. The mountains surrounding the fortress shook violently as distant lands echoed with similar tremors.

Ayan felt the bridge becoming increasingly unstable.

Not damaged.

Active.

As though it were responding to a signal.

The realization sent a chill down his spine.

Something was reaching toward him.

Not physically.

Conceptually.

Across realities.

Across dimensions.

Across impossible distances.

Aelira noticed his expression immediately.

She moved beside him and lowered her voice.

"The bridge is reacting again."

Ayan nodded.

He could barely hide it.

Black and crimson patterns spread across his arms before fading again. The energy beneath his skin felt restless.

Hungry.

Searching.

The sensation reminded him of hearing a familiar voice from another room without being able to identify the speaker.

The bridge knew something.

The problem was that Ayan didn't.

The fortress shook again.

This time several windows shattered.

Glass rained across the stone floor while frightened voices echoed through the corridors outside.

Lucien finally looked away from the sky.

His gaze moved toward Ayan.

For the first time since their meeting, he seemed to be making a decision.

A difficult one.

"You need to leave."

The room fell silent.

Nobody expected those words.

Aelira frowned immediately.

"What?"

Lucien ignored her.

His eyes remained fixed on Ayan.

"You need to leave this fortress."

The silver-haired man's voice had become unusually serious.

"The longer you remain here, the worse this becomes."

Ayan folded his arms.

"And why exactly would I trust you?"

A faint smile appeared.

Not the amused smile Lucien usually wore.

A tired one.

"Because I'm trying very hard to prevent history from repeating itself."

The answer created more questions.

Unfortunately, there wasn't time to ask them.

A sudden sound echoed throughout the fortress.

Not an explosion.

Not a tremor.

A bell.

A warning bell.

One of the guards rushed into the chamber moments later.

His face had gone completely pale.

"The eastern wall!"

Everyone turned toward him.

The guard struggled to catch his breath.

"Something appeared."

The room became silent.

Lucien closed his eyes.

The reaction told Ayan everything he needed to know.

Whatever had appeared—

Lucien already knew about it.

Nobody waited for an explanation.

The entire group moved immediately.

They rushed through the fortress corridors while frightened refugees pressed themselves against the walls. Panic spread rapidly through the stronghold. People whispered prayers. Others packed belongings.

Everyone sensed something was wrong.

By the time they reached the eastern wall, hundreds had already gathered there.

The crowd parted as Ayan approached.

Then he saw it.

A crack.

Not in the sky.

In the world.

The fracture stretched vertically across the valley below the fortress. It hovered several meters above the ground, glowing with pale silver light. Unlike the crimson fractures overhead, this one appeared stable.

Deliberate.

Artificial.

The sight immediately reminded Ayan of the crack Lucien had created earlier.

Only this one was far larger.

The valley had fallen silent.

No birds.

No wind.

No movement.

Only the fracture remained.

Waiting.

The bridge reacted instantly.

Ayan felt black and crimson energy surge beneath his skin.

The silver fracture responded.

Light rippled across its surface.

Then slowly—

It opened.

Gasps spread throughout the gathered crowd.

The fracture widened like a door.

A space emerged beyond it.

Not darkness.

Not another dimension.

A city.

The same impossible city.

Ayan recognized it immediately.

The river.

The streets.

The distant towers.

The strange black sky hanging overhead.

The city from Lena's memories.

The city from his vision.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The sight was too impossible.

Too absurd.

An entire city existed beyond the fracture.

A city reality claimed had never existed.

Then someone stepped forward.

A woman.

She emerged from the city slowly.

Unlike Lucien, she appeared completely ordinary.

Dark hair.

Simple clothing.

No visible weapons.

Yet the moment she crossed the threshold, the atmosphere changed.

The bridge exploded with energy.

Ayan nearly stumbled.

The reaction was stronger than anything he had experienced since Sector Seven.

The woman noticed immediately.

Her eyes widened.

Then she smiled.

Not cruelly.

Not maliciously.

Warmly.

As though she had finally found something she had been searching for.

The expression made Ayan uncomfortable.

Because it felt familiar.

Too familiar.

The woman studied him for several seconds.

Then she spoke.

The words echoed clearly across the silent valley.

"We finally found you."

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

The bridge pulsed once.

Twice.

Then harder than ever before.

The woman's smile widened slightly.

And for the first time since Volume Two began—

Ayan realized he might not be the one searching for answers.

Something had been searching for him.
