Aldric had stayed behind in the apartment, promising to make the arrangements for the DNA sample first thing in the morning, his relief at finally sharing the weight of eleven years visible in the way his shoulders had loosened the moment they'd left. Caro had hugged him before they went, an impulse that had surprised both of them, and he'd held himself very still for a moment before returning it, awkwardly, like a man who'd forgotten how.
"We can't do both tonight," Caro said, watching the city slide past the window. "Sera, and Lena. Not safely. Not if Aldric needs three days to arrange the DNA test without raising suspicion."
