Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody even dared blink.
The forest had become a prison of silence.
Alex stared at the spot where the glowing red eyes had disappeared.
His heart hammered against his ribs.
Beside him, Charmander's tail flame burned higher than normal.
Not from excitement.
From fear.
Pure fear.
Yellow slowly backed toward Alex.
"Tell me you saw that."
"I saw it."
Damian's voice was unusually quiet.
Yellow looked at him.
"You saw it too?"
Damian nodded.
His hand had already moved to one of his Poké Balls.
For the first time since Alex had met him…
Damian looked genuinely nervous.
That alone was enough to make Alex uneasy.
Because Damian wasn't the type to panic.
Ever.
The forest remained still.
Nothing moved.
Nothing spoke.
Nothing revealed itself.
Yet all three of them knew one thing.
Something was there.
Watching.
Waiting.
The Darkness Watches
Minutes passed.
The group remained frozen.
Then…
Nothing happened.
No attack.
No roar.
No movement.
Just silence.
Eventually Alex exhaled.
Slowly.
"I don't think it's attacking."
Yellow looked at him like he'd lost his mind.
"That's supposed to make me feel better?"
Alex shrugged.
"A little."
"It doesn't."
"Fair."
Damian continued staring into the trees.
His eyes narrowed.
"It's studying us."
Alex looked over.
"What?"
"The way it moved."
Damian pointed toward the darkness.
"If it wanted us dead…"
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.
Everyone understood.
Whatever was out there…
Could have attacked already.
Instead…
It was observing them.
Like a predator deciding whether something was worth hunting.
That thought was somehow worse.
Moving Forward
"We can't stay here."
Alex finally broke the silence.
Yellow immediately agreed.
"Best idea you've had all day."
Damian nodded.
The group slowly continued walking.
Nobody relaxed.
Every snapped twig made them jump.
Every shifting shadow looked suspicious.
The deeper they traveled…
The stranger the forest became.
The trees grew enormous.
Some were hundreds of years old.
Their roots twisted across the ground like giant serpents.
Moss covered everything.
Even the air felt heavier.
Harder to breathe.
Almost like the forest itself didn't want visitors.
Charmander suddenly stopped.
"Char…"
Alex looked down.
"What is it?"
The Fire-type pointed ahead.
Everyone followed its gaze.
Then froze.
More footprints.
But these weren't like the others.
These were fresh.
Very fresh.
The mud around them was still wet.
Something huge had passed through recently.
Extremely recently.
Damian crouched beside one.
His expression darkened.
"It's following us."
Yellow's face went pale.
"What?"
Damian pointed.
"The tracks weren't here before."
Alex immediately understood.
The giant creature wasn't simply living in the forest.
It was moving around them.
Tracking them.
Watching them.
Following them.
Yellow swallowed hard.
"I suddenly miss civilization."
The Abandoned Camp
About thirty minutes later…
The forest suddenly opened.
The group stepped into a clearing.
And immediately stopped.
There was a campsite.
Or at least…
What was left of one.
Torn tents lay scattered everywhere.
Broken equipment littered the ground.
A campfire pit sat abandoned in the center.
The entire area looked like it had been hit by a hurricane.
Alex slowly walked forward.
"Someone was here."
Damian nodded.
"Recently."
Yellow pointed toward the remains of a tent.
"Look."
Everyone followed her gaze.
A large slash cut through the canvas.
Not a tear.
Not damage from weather.
A slash.
Something sharp had done it.
Something very sharp.
Alex felt a chill.
Then he noticed something lying near the fire pit.
A notebook.
Old.
Dirty.
Partially damaged.
He picked it up carefully.
Most of the pages were ruined.
But some entries remained readable.
Alex opened it.
The handwriting was messy.
Rushed.
Panicked.
He began reading aloud.
Day 4
"The tracks are getting larger."
"Professor Hayes believes we've found evidence of an unknown species."
"The others are excited."
"I'm not."
Alex turned the page.
Day 6
"Something is watching us at night."
"I saw red eyes outside my tent."
"Nobody believes me."
Yellow looked uncomfortable.
Alex kept reading.
Day 7
"The noises are getting closer."
"We found another broken collar."
"Whatever destroyed it must possess unbelievable strength."
Damian frowned.
"The collars again."
Alex nodded.
Then turned another page.
The handwriting became shakier.
More desperate.
Day 8
"Professor Hayes is missing."
"We searched for hours."
"Only found his backpack."
The group exchanged nervous glances.
Alex continued.
Day 9
"We were wrong."
"This isn't a Pokémon we've discovered."
"This thing doesn't want to be found."
"If anyone reads this…"
"Leave."
The final page was badly damaged.
Only a few words remained.
"It's behind us."
"RUN—"
The entry ended there.
Yellow slowly lowered her head.
Nobody spoke.
The implications were obvious.
Whoever had written this notebook…
Hadn't finished.
The Roar Returns
Then—
ROOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRR!!
The sound erupted across the forest.
Far louder than before.
The ground shook violently.
Trees swayed.
Birds exploded into the sky.
Yellow nearly fell over.
Alex grabbed her arm.
The roar seemed to come from everywhere at once.
Above.
Below.
Ahead.
Behind.
Every direction.
Charmander covered its ears.
"CHAR!!"
Even Damian looked shaken.
The roar continued.
And continued.
And continued.
Then suddenly stopped.
The silence afterward felt unbearable.
Like the entire world was holding its breath.
The Discovery
Then Alex noticed something.
A cave entrance.
Hidden behind vines.
Halfway up a nearby cliff.
Damian followed his gaze.
His eyes widened.
"Guys…"
Yellow looked.
"What?"
Damian pointed.
"There."
The cave was enormous.
Far too large for any normal Pokémon.
Its entrance looked like the mouth of a sleeping monster.
Dark.
Silent.
Waiting.
Alex stared.
The giant footprints led directly toward it.
Every single one.
His stomach dropped.
Because suddenly…
The mystery wasn't a mystery anymore.
The tracks.
The roars.
The eyes.
Everything led here.
Yellow looked horrified.
"Please tell me we're not going inside."
Alex and Damian looked at each other.
Then back at the cave.
Then at each other again.
Yellow already knew the answer.
"Oh, come on!"
Inside the Cave
A few minutes later…
The three trainers cautiously entered.
Darkness swallowed them immediately.
The air was cold.
Very cold.
Drops of water echoed from somewhere deep inside.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
Charmander's tail became their only source of light.
The deeper they traveled…
The larger the tunnel became.
Soon it was less like a cave…
And more like a gigantic underground cavern.
Then they found bones.
Lots of bones.
Pokémon bones.
Large ones.
Small ones.
Old ones.
Everywhere.
Yellow froze.
"Nope."
Alex swallowed.
"Yeah…"
Damian's face had gone pale.
Then something caught the light.
Metal.
Near one of the walls.
Alex walked over.
His heart sank.
Another collar.
Except this one wasn't broken.
It was melted.
As if something unbelievably hot had destroyed it.
Damian stared.
"What kind of Pokémon can do that?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Then—
THUD.
The sound echoed through the cavern.
Everyone froze.
THUD.
Again.
Louder.
Closer.
THUD.
THUD.
THUD.
Something massive was moving.
Deep within the darkness.
Slowly approaching.
The entire cavern trembled with each step.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Yellow's voice was barely a whisper.
"Alex…"
"I know."
Another step.
THUD.
Then another.
THUD.
A pair of gigantic red eyes opened within the darkness.
Much larger than before.
The eyes alone were nearly the size of a person.
Ancient.
Powerful.
Predatory.
Then a deep voice rumbled from the shadows.
Not a roar.
Not a growl.
A voice.
A real voice.
Ancient and terrifying.
Unknown Creature:
"…Humans."
The three trainers froze.
Their minds struggled to process what they'd heard.
The creature took another step forward.
Its enormous silhouette slowly emerged from the darkness.
And the moment Alex finally saw what was standing before them…
His blood turned to ice.
Because Damian's grandfather had been right.
Ancient Pokémon weren't extinct.
One had been waiting here all along.
And now…
It knew they were here.
