Chapter 51 - Chapter 51 – The Fear Behind It

Kushina barely slept.

Again.

The hidden seals stayed in her mind long after she returned to the shelter.

Not because they made her angry.

Because they didn't.

That was worse.

Because anger would have been easier.

Anger was simple.

This wasn't.

Morning arrived quietly.

Cold air drifted through the narrow opening of the shelter.

Gray light filtered across stone walls and sleeping gear.

Minato was already awake.

Of course.

Daichi was gone.

Again.

Of course.

Kushina stared at the empty space where he had been.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

"…still thinking about it…"

"…yes…"

"…he's scared…"

"…he should talk then…"

A low rumble answered her.

Not amused this time.

Just observing.

The morning passed slowly.

No attacks.

No hunters.

No explosions.

Just waiting.

Which somehow felt worse.

Kushina sat near the entrance, absentmindedly turning a small stone in her fingers.

Minato sat nearby.

Quiet.

Watching the forest.

Watching everything.

Eventually—

Kushina spoke.

"…how long have you known him?"

Minato glanced sideways.

"…Daichi?"

"Obviously."

A pause.

"…a long time."

That wasn't helpful.

Kushina threw the stone lightly.

"…great answer."

"…you ask vague questions."

"…annoying."

"…you've mentioned that."

She rolled her eyes.

Of course.

Silence settled again.

Then—

"…he wasn't always like this."

Kushina blinked.

That got her attention.

"…what do you mean?"

Minato's gaze remained fixed on the trees.

Thinking.

Remembering.

"…he used to trust people more."

A pause.

"…before Akane."

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

Kushina's stomach tightened.

"…what happened?"

Minato didn't answer right away.

For a moment—

she thought he wouldn't answer at all.

Then—

"She was his student."

A pause.

"The closest thing he ever had to family."

That surprised her.

Daichi never talked about family.

Never talked about anything.

"She was talented."

Another pause.

"Stubborn."

Kushina snorted.

"…sounds familiar."

"…very."

That earned the smallest hint of amusement from him.

Then it vanished again.

Minato looked down briefly.

"…he believed he could protect her."

Silence.

"He couldn't."

The words landed quietly.

But they hit hard.

Kushina looked away.

Toward the forest.

Toward nothing.

Thinking.

"…he blames himself."

It wasn't really a question.

Minato nodded once.

"…yes."

A pause.

"More than anyone else does."

For a long time neither of them spoke.

The wind moved softly through the trees.

Somewhere in the distance, a bird called once.

Then silence returned.

Finally—

Kushina sighed.

"…that doesn't make him right."

"No."

She looked at Minato immediately.

He met her gaze calmly.

Steady.

Certain.

"…but it explains him."

Silence.

That was harder to argue with.

Hours later—

Daichi returned.

Dust on his clothes.

Fresh scratches on one arm.

A tiredness in his eyes most people would never notice.

Most people.

Not Kushina.

Not anymore.

He stepped into the shelter.

Looked at Minato.

Looked at Kushina.

Then immediately started checking supplies.

Avoiding conversation.

Again.

Kushina watched him for several seconds.

Then—

"…you know, most people say hello."

Daichi didn't look up.

"I saw you yesterday."

"…that's not how greetings work."

Silence.

Minato immediately stood.

"…I'm going outside."

Kushina pointed at him.

"Coward."

"…accurate."

Then he left.

Leaving the two of them alone.

Exactly as intended.

The silence that followed felt enormous.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

For several long seconds.

Then—

"You found the seals."

Daichi's voice.

Quiet.

Matter-of-fact.

Kushina blinked.

"…you knew I would."

"Yes."

That irritated her immediately.

"…you seriously set alarms in case I left?"

Daichi finally looked up.

"No."

A pause.

"I set them because I wasn't sure."

Silence.

That answer surprised her.

Because it was honest.

Painfully honest.

Kushina crossed her arms.

"…you really think I'd just disappear."

Daichi held her gaze.

For a moment—

he looked like he wanted to say something else.

Something he normally wouldn't.

Then—

"Yes."

The answer came quietly.

Without accusation.

Without anger.

Just fear.

Kushina froze.

Because suddenly—

she understood.

Not completely.

Not enough.

But more than before.

Daichi looked away first.

Toward the shelter entrance.

Toward the forest.

Toward anywhere except her.

"…Akane left too."

The words were barely above a whisper.

But Kushina heard them.

Every single one.

Silence crashed down between them.

Heavy.

Real.

Painful.

For the first time—

Daichi wasn't talking about strategy.

Or missions.

Or mistakes.

He was talking about loss.

And suddenly—

the argument didn't feel quite the same anymore.

Far away—

hidden beneath stone walls and darkness—

a masked figure lowered its head slightly.

A communication seal flickered.

A voice echoed softly through the chamber.

"The emotional divide is narrowing."

Silence.

Then another voice answered.

"Unfortunate."

A pause.

"Accelerate phase two."

And somewhere deep inside a sealed chamber—

Ren opened his eyes.

This time—

he remembered Kushina's face.
