Chapter 7 - The Escape part 2

3rd Person POV

Once Gale completed his countdown, the two groups went to work and set off to fulfill their roles, with group 1, consisting of eight people, quickly splitting off to the area where they planned to place their charges. They quickly began arming the explosives per Lucas's instructions and moved away to prepare to set them off when the time came.

Clover, leading group 2, armed with pickaxes, quickly ran into the area, and she spotted her target. This slaver was preparing to whip a young boy who looked on the verge of passing out, and as the slaver raised his whip, Clover, in an instant, sped up faster than any normal person could run, and before the slaver even realized it, had the point of a pickaxe buried into his neck.

"Gcckkkk!"

Clover quickly yanked the pickaxe out of the man's neck, causing the man to fall to the ground, attempting to hold his throat and make futile attempts to breathe, but the only thing that came out was the sound of him gargling due to the pool of blood forming in his throat. As soon as the slaver dropped to the floor, Clover grabbed a combat knife that the slaver had on him and a small device that appeared almost as if it were a translucent smartphone and began to move towards her next target, leaving the dying man.

At the same time, Clover attacked her target, the others in her group attacked the other slavers and their grunts using either their pickaxes to bash their heads in, and with others using magic to attack them, with some using fire or electricity to scorch their targets, or using ice to impale their vital points before they even had a chance to react. Once their unsuspecting targets were killed, the other slavers and grunts in the area became alerted to the formerly enslaved people and went to attack, and quickly, the mining area became a small war zone.

As the slavers approached, they began casting their own magic and throwing fireballs at their attackers. Quickly, group 2 took cover and returned the magic in kind. Small explosions of magic began to appear all over the area and while this was happening Clover stealthily and without hesitation began to slit the throats of the distracted slavers who were too preoccupied with casting magic and once they fell it was a matter of cleaning up the grunts who could not cast any magic and were armed with nothing more than whips and knives and were quickly incinerated, impaled or beaten to death by group 2.

Once they finished, Clover looked to all the still captive enslaved people that were being put to work, who had gone off toks when the fighting started, and knew that all the sounds of the attack would cause the patrols to head to their current location. Looking at the enslaved people, she loudly announced, "Everyone!" At this, a few of the enslaved people flinched but looked at Clover as she continued to speak. " I know you're all scared and tired, but today is the day of our liberation! Today, we fight back against our captors and free ourselves from their cruelty and go back home! So I ask you to pick up your pickaxes and fight for your freedom!

Once Clover finished speaking, the enslaved people looked at one another with scared expressions. They were hesitant to fight until the small boy, who was on the verge of fainting, slowly but with resolve lifted his pickaxe and announced: "I- I'm going home!" Hearing the small boy resolve one by one, the group of 30 enslaved people began to raise their pickaxes filled with new life and determination, and were ready to fight against their captors all for the chance to go home. They all rallied in time as the sounds of footsteps began to echo down various tunnels. All the enslaved people and group 2 prepared themselves, and when they saw their enemy, they charged and attacked.

Chaos began as the slavers were not prepared for the riot and were too confident in the fact that the enslaved people could not use magic of any sort, and were beginning to be overwhelmed by the enslaved people. As she saw this, Clover quickly moved away from the battle and towards the tunnel that Gale was in to start the second part of his plan, as the young wolf had asked Clover to bring him the device that the slavers had used to contact Rekka, as it was essential to his plan to lure her down into the mines. As she sprinted through the mines, she eventually found the boy near where he had planted his charge, hunched over, covering his mouth, almost as though he was fighting the urge to vomit.

Gale had completed his task quickly and had begun to move away and to his hiding spot to wait for Clover, but as group 2 began their assault and the bodies began to drop, he dropped to his knees and began to gag. He had smelled blood before with his new senses and even the smell of burning flesh before, but in smaller amounts. This, however, was far more than the wolf had expected, as the thick smell of blood and death had filled his nose unlike any he had smelled before, and the boy fought the urge to vomit and was stuck in place attempting to compose himself and adjust to the smell. As he continued trying to compose himself, he felt a tap on his shoulder, shot up, looked at the one who tapped him, and startled Clover.

"A-are you ok?" Asked Clover, slightly stumbling on her words.

Felling slightly nauseous but slightly more composed, Gale replied, " I'm fine. Did you get what you asked for?"

At this, Clover took out the small device she had taken off the enslaved person's body and attempted to hand it over to Gale, who stopped her and told her to hold on to it as he wasn't sure how the device worked. Gale looked at the device and wondered inwardly how it worked, having seen the slavers use it many times to communicate with Rekka. However, he was still interested in how it worked, since it reminded him of a translucent smartphone, and then quickly shifted his focus back to Clover.

"So what's the second part of the plan?" Asked Clover.

"We are going to call Rekka," Gale responded.

Meanwhile, on the surface

"Are the preparations complete?" Asked Rekka to one of her engineers.

"I-I apologize, Mistress, but w-we're still calibrating the engines a-and checking to make sure all the systems are in working order..." replied the engineer.

For a moment, Rekka stared at the engineer and slowly walked to her, grabbed the woman by her face, and pulled her to her face, speaking, "I believe I told you and your team to have the ship ready by this time. Why is it that you are STILL checking what should have been done hours ago?"

The engineer began to shake, and tears began to form in her eyes, and she did her best to speak, "I-I'm sorry, Mistress, please forgive me. We could finish in time, but there were some minor issues with the ship's navigational systems, and then there was some unknown static coming from the Coms and... and... I'm sorry..."

Rekka, while still holding the woman's face, inhaled deeply through her nose. After she exhaled, she spoke, "There is a customer who is currently waiting for me to deliver his product that he is willing to pay MILLIONS for, and is expecting me to be there on time. If I arrive late or delay my arrival, do you suppose he'll pay me? No, he may end up lowering the amount, or worse, ruin my reputation as a respectable businesswoman because you couldn't fix a minor issue ON TIME." Rekkas tone grew harsher and louder and small flames began to flicker off of her coat that she wore and continued to speak "Of all the things that I value most the thing I hold in highest regard is my reputation and if you're the one responsible for tarnishing it then I need to make sure you can never do it again and to set an example for all those who come after you."

Once she had finished speaking, flames starting at Rekka's shoulder slowly engulfed her arm. The engineer began to weep, closed her eyes, and prepared for her death, and her team working on the ship, along with some grunts, looked away in horror and prepared for the screams of anguish. Before the flames reached the engineer's face, however, one of Rekka's personal guards approached Rekka and said, "Madam, there's something that requires your attention."

Stopping the flames at her wrist, she looked back at her guard with a look of anger. "You know I don't like to be interrupted. What could be so important that you felt the need to do something so foolish?" Rekka said while holding onto the engineer.

"Apologies, Madam, but one of the jailers is calling you through the emergency line." Replied the guard holding the translucent device.

Rekka let the engineer go, causing her to fall down and quickly crawl back to her team. Rekka approached the guard, took the device from his hand, and answered, which caused the screen to display a man as she addressed him. "I'm not in a very good mood right now, so this had better be important."

"M-madam, it's the slaves they've escaped and have begun to attack us using magic!" Replied the man on the screen.

"What?!"

Rekka then took notice of the sounds, only explosions and shouting going on in the background, and then took notice of the soot and small blood splatter on the man's face. "How could this happen?! What happened to their shackles? It should have prevented them from doing any magic!"

"I-I don't know, but they've managed to get rid of them and took us by surprise and started killing us all," replied the man, who then pointed the device he was on towards the chaos happening.

Rekka could clearly see the chaos ensuing and the various bodies littering the floor of the jailers she had put in charge and seeing the enslaved people working together to kill their captors with them stabbing their pickaxes again and again into their enemies and, the jailers unable to fight back due to numbers and with some of the enslaved people attacking with various forms of elemental magic preventing any of the jailers from fighting back as well. Rekka knew that none of the jailers were prepared for this, as they had all grown too comfortable and overconfident due to the shackles preventing the enslaved people from attacking with magic, resulting in the jailers becoming lazy in fighting.

"What about the dragon girl?! Where is she?!" Yelled Rekka.

"I don't know, madam, she might have escaped along with the rest of them, but I ran and hid away in the tunnels when I saw it."

Furious Rekka yelled with bright flames beginning to flare from her back, "WHY ARE YOU HIDING AWAY, YOU PATHETIC COWARD! WHAT COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE YOU TO HIDE AWAY LIKE A SNIVELING CHILD!"

"It got out."

In an instant, Rekka froze at the man's words and asked, "What?"

"I-I saw it, Madam, it killed some of the men in an instant, and after that I saw it, I-I ran away, and I called you... please, please help me, Madam, please don't let it get me..." replied the man whose voice began to break.

The man then looked up from the screen and began to yell, "No... No.. NO.... PLEASE NO!!" In an instant, a small body lunged at the man, causing him to drop the device and continue walking away from the camera. After a few seconds, the man's yelling stopped, and, for a moment, Rekka saw a young boy with Wolf ears who hit the device with a pickaxe, cutting the line.

"ALL PERSONNEL TO BATTLE!" Yelled Rekka, who pulled her sword out of its sheath that hung from her waist, and ran into the cave on the surface that led to the tunnels under the island they were on.

At her yell, her entire squad, as well as the jailers that remained on the surface, and their grunts ran into the cave following their mistress. A group of 40 armed people, including Rekka, began to charge through the system, preparing for what could be their final moments. Rekka ran like a madwoman and could feel and hear her heart beating far faster than it ever did on the battlefield during her time in the military.

'How could this have happened?' Rekka thought. 'There shouldn't have been a way to take those shackles off without blowing up their limbs. Did someone grab the key without me noticing? Did it malfunction somehow? Now I have to find a way to kill that wolf, especially if it has awakened its power. As soon as I see it, I'll have to kill it immediately. A quick decapitation should do it, as I can't risk using magic, as it probably might not work on it.'

As she formulated a plan, she ran towards the most current mining area where the jailers had brought the last batch of slaves in with her personnel right behind her. Rekka finally arrived at the mining area, and the scent of blood filled the air as she saw the corpses littering the area of the enslaved people and jailers, with some having what looked like looks of terror on their faces. As she looked around the area, she froze in place as she saw him. He was kneeling near the body of one of the enslaved people with his back facing her. Rekka saw the small wolf boy. The boy stood up, and for a moment, Rekka flinched, and as the boy began to turn around, she surged toward the boy and, in one fell swoop, swung her sword towards the boy's neck and cut his head off... or she had thought.

Rekka knew something was wrong as she felt no resistance at the start of the cut and saw as she completed her swing that there was no visible wound on the boy. She quickly approached the boy, made a motion to touch his head, and saw her hand pass through and around. At that moment, the rest of her men arrived in the area, and when they saw their mistress and approached her, Rekka yelled at them, "It's a trick!"

At that moment the illusion of the boy faded as did the "bodies" of the slaves and a voice yelled out "NOW!" and explosions surrounding the area began to ring out in a circle along with an explosion on the ceiling and soon the entire mining area began to collapse with large boulders falling on top of Rekka and her squad completely burying them under the rubble with the last thing Rekka saw was a small wolf boy running away in one of the tunnels along with a group of slaves.
