"Baby, that hurts." Alex's voice softened noticeably as he slowly lowered his hand.
The sudden change in his tone caught me off guard.
Just moments ago, he had been radiating anger, his entire body tense with fury. Now, there was something almost vulnerable in his expression.
The shock on his face was unmistakable, his brows slowly drew together, forming a deep crease between them as though my words had genuinely wounded him.
As though what I had said hurt far more than any physical blow ever could.
For several seconds, he simply stared at me, his eyes searching my face, almost desperately, as if he were looking for some sign that I didn't mean it.
That I would take the words back and that this was all some misunderstanding.
"You never say such words to me," he added quietly.
The pain in his voice was impossible to miss.
But instead of feeling sympathy, I felt exhaustion.
