Morning came without announcing itself.
No particular moment where the dark became less dark and the grey became more grey — just a slow reluctant shift in the quality of the air, the way seasons change when you're not watching, arriving complete before you noticed it arriving at all. Light found the gaps in the shuttered window and lay across the cabin floor in thin pale lines that carried no warmth.
Muhan had not slept.
He had sat in the chair across from Scarlett's empty one — she had taken the sleeping mat near the hearth at some point in the early hours, her breathing settling into the slow even rhythm of someone who had done this enough times that even the night's particular quality of silence couldn't keep her from it — and he had sat with his hands on the table and his eyes on the covered mirror and his mind somewhere else entirely.
Not here.
Not in this town with its moss-packed walls and its reluctant torches and the thing that moved through it after dark.
In a corridor on Level 7 of the AVC building, the eternal steel buckled beneath him, the grey static at the edges of his vision that hadn't cleared before the cold arrived and took him. Lex's hands on his shoulders. The weight under Lex's fingers thinning the way smoke thins. His brother's voice coming back off the fractured walls.
He sat with that.
He sat with it the way he had sat with Phil's footsteps fading down the corridor — not managing it, not putting it anywhere, just letting it be present in the specific full-weight way of things that had no category and couldn't be made smaller by being organised.
The pale lines of morning light moved across the floor as the angle of whatever grey sky existed above this place shifted.
Scarlett woke without transitioning through drowsiness — one moment her breathing carried sleep and the next she was sitting upright on the mat with her eyes open and her assessment of the room already complete before the rest of her had finished waking.
She looked at him.
At the dark beneath his eyes. At his hands still on the table in the same position they had been in hours ago.
She didn't say anything.
She got up and built the fire back from coals and put water on to heat, and the cabin filled with the ordinary sounds of a morning beginning, and Muhan watched the covered mirror and waited for his mind to come back from the place the Trauma Spell hadn't taken him.

Outside, the village was wrong in daylight.
Not frightening — not the active specific wrongness of the night, the torches burning reluctant, the dark between the trees paying attention. Something quieter. The wrongness of a place that had made its accommodations with fear so long ago that fear had become part of the architecture, visible in daylight the same way rot is visible in old wood — not dramatic, just present, the specific evidence of something that had been happening for a long time before you arrived.
The road in daylight was narrow and cobbled and moss-grown, the same as it had been in the dark, except that now Muhan could see the full length of it and what it connected. Buildings to the left and right, their warped wooden faces carrying the morning light without warming to it, the rusted iron staining their doors the same dark red in daylight as it had been in torchlight. Beyond the main road, smaller paths between structures, the village extending in both directions further than the night had suggested.
People moved through it.
Not many. Not at the pace of people who had things to get to and were getting there. The specific economy of people who had stopped investing in urgency — moving between one place and another because the day required moving and not because the moving held any particular promise. They carried what they needed to carry. They exchanged what needed exchanging. They looked at each other the way people look at each other when looking at each other has stopped being a pleasure and become a kind of inventory — checking, noting, moving on.
Muhan walked beside Scarlett and read the village the way he read everything.
The gaps between buildings where structures had been and weren't anymore — foundations still visible, the outline of walls in the moss, the specific negative space of something removed rather than never built. A well at the road's centre that two women drew from without speaking to each other. A cart standing against one building's wall with one wheel missing, untouched long enough that moss had begun climbing the axle.
And at the far end of the main road, where the cobbles gave way to open ground before the treeline pressed close again — the marketplace.

It occupied a wide square that the buildings drew back from, their faces turned toward it like an audience that had forgotten why it was watching. Stalls lined the perimeter — some occupied, some not, the ones occupied carrying the modest inventory of a community that traded what it had because trading what it had was what you did rather than because abundance made it worthwhile. Dried goods. Repaired tools. Cloth that had been mended so many times the original fabric was more memory than material.
Between the stalls, on stone plinths that had been here longer than the market had, the statues stood.
Four of them. Stone worn by weather and time into a softness that blurred their details without erasing them — arms, faces, the suggestion of attributes that had once distinguished each from the others and now distinguished them only from the bare plinths beside them, where statues had been and were now absent. They held the specific quality of things that had been important and were no longer, that had been allowed to remain not out of reverence but out of the specific practical indifference of people who had more pressing concerns than removing them.
Dead gods.
Their names worn off the plinths' bases by the same weather that had softened their faces, or carved off — it was difficult to tell which. The stone around the absent lettering was differently weathered in places, suggesting deliberate removal rather than natural erosion.
Muhan looked at them as he and Scarlett moved through the market.
He was still looking when the man started shouting.

He was maybe fifty, thin in the specific way of someone whose body had decided that maintaining mass was a resource it could no longer justify spending, his coat too large for the frame it hung from. He stood at the market's centre and his voice carried across the square in the high carrying register of someone who had stopped worrying about who heard them, which was either bravery or something past it.
"She was here," he was saying. "In the street. I saw her. Three nights past — she was standing in the road outside Maren's house and the light went wrong around her. All of it red. Everything red."
The market continued around him with the practiced inattention of people who had heard this before.
A woman at a nearby stall adjusted her inventory without looking up.
Two men at the well exchanged a glance that carried the weight of a conversation they had already had several times.
"She's here," the man said. "She's been here. We've all seen what she leaves behind but nobody — nobody will say it—"
"Dovan." A heavyset man near the stall looked up with the exhausted patience of someone deploying a specific tone for a specific purpose. "Sit down."
"She was there. I saw—"
"You saw shadows. You see shadows every night, you've been seeing shadows since Pera—" The man stopped. Something moved across his face and departed. "Sit down."
Dovan looked at him with the specific expression of someone who has been told something true in a way designed to silence rather than inform. His mouth closed. He looked at the market around him — the careful inattention, the adjusted inventory, the glance at the well — and something in his face recognised what it was looking at and went somewhere private with the recognition.
He sat down on the plinth of the nearest god-statue.
Muhan watched him sit.
Scarlett's hand found his arm briefly — a direction, gentle, toward the stall she had been moving toward before the shouting started. He went with it.
"Who is he," Muhan said quietly.
"Dovan," she said. "His wife went missing six weeks ago." She kept her voice level. "He hasn't slept properly since."
"And what did he see."
Scarlett looked at the stall's inventory.
"What he said he saw," she said.
She picked up a cloth and examined its weave and set it back down and said nothing else, and Muhan looked at Dovan sitting on the plinth of a dead god with his too-large coat and his carrying voice and his face that had gone somewhere private, and he said nothing else either.

Scarlett introduced him as her brother.
She did it the way she did everything — without preamble, to a woman with sharp eyes and flour on her hands who ran the bread stall and who looked at Muhan the way people look at things that don't quite fit the category they've been placed in.
"Brother," the woman said.
"Junior," Scarlett said.
The woman looked at Muhan's eyes. At his face. Back at Scarlett.
"He doesn't look much like you," she said. Not unkindly. The tone of someone noting a fact that warranted noting without making anything of it.
"Our mother's side," Scarlett said.
The woman accepted this with the specific expression of someone who hadn't accepted it but wasn't going to press it in a market with other things to attend to. She gave Muhan a small nod that acknowledged his existence without committing to anything further and returned to her bread.
Muhan said nothing.
He had been cataloguing the village since they stepped outside and the catalogue had taken up most of what his mind had available to give it, which was less than usual because the part of his mind not cataloguing the village was still in a Level 7 corridor with Lex's hands closing on empty air.
He was not, he recognised, operating at full capacity.
He recognised it the way you recognise a blunt tool — not useless, just requiring more force to do what a sharp one would do with less, and force was also a resource he was currently running low on.

The temple ruins were at the village's northern edge, where the main road ended and the treeline pressed closest.
What remained of them was substantial enough to suggest what they had been and not substantial enough to suggest they had been treated with care on the way down. Walls standing to different heights, some to the shoulder, some to the knee, the stone the same dark damp material as everything else in the village except older, carrying the specific quality of something built with a different intention than the buildings around it. Carvings on the remaining wall faces, worn but readable — patterns that suggested language without quite being language, the specific visual grammar of devotion rather than communication.
The man kneeling in the centre of the ruins didn't look up when Muhan and Scarlett reached the edge of them.
He was perhaps forty, dark-haired, his clothes in better condition than most of the village's residents in a way that seemed to come from care rather than means — things mended precisely, worn deliberately, the specific presentation of someone who believed appearance carried meaning. His hands were flat on the stone floor of what had been the temple's interior, his head bowed, his lips moving in something too quiet to carry.
Scarlett stopped at the ruin's edge.
Two women passing behind them exchanged a look that contained an entire conversation — pity shaded with the impatience of people who had spent their pity on larger things and were now operating on the dregs of it.
The man's lips kept moving.
"That's Rey," Scarlett said quietly.
Muhan looked at the carvings on the remaining walls. At the patterned stone the man knelt on. At the specific angle of devotion his body held — not performed, not the posture of someone who wanted to be seen praying but the posture of someone who had forgotten to consider whether they were being seen.
"What god," Muhan said.
Scarlett was quiet for a moment.
"Hyeonsil," she said.
The name landed in Muhan's memory before he had finished hearing it — arriving in the specific way of things encountered before in a different context, pulling with it the texture of the Archive Records, the particular section he had read once and moved past without fully registering, the section on dead gods that the Archive kept as historical record rather than active reference.
God of Reality.
He looked at Rey kneeling in the ruins of a temple to a dead god, his lips still moving, his hands flat on the carved stone floor.
Behind them, at the market, Dovan sat on the plinth of an unnamed statue and looked at nothing.
Muhan looked at the carvings on the walls.
He looked at the treeline beyond the ruins, where the dark forest pressed up against the village's northern edge so close that the outermost branches overhung the ruin's remaining walls, dropping leaves onto the carved stone below.
He looked at the leaves.
They were red.
Not autumn red — not the honest deterioration of leaves at the end of their season. Red in the specific way of something that had been changed rather than aged, the colour too saturated, too uniform, too deliberate.
All of them.
Every leaf that had fallen from the branches overhanging the ruins lay on the carved stone in the same impossible red, and none of the leaves on the branches still attached carried the same colour, and none of the other trees at the treeline showed it, and the stone beneath them was the same dark stone it had always been.
Muhan looked at the red leaves on the temple floor.
He looked at Rey's hands flat on the stone among them.
Rey hadn't moved them away from the red leaves.
He hadn't moved them toward them either.
He knelt among them as though they weren't there, as though their presence on the stone was as ordinary as the stone itself, as though a man who prayed daily in ruins overlung by a forest that dropped red leaves onto the floor of his god's destroyed temple had long ago incorporated that detail into the ordinary texture of his devotion.
Muhan stood at the ruin's edge.
He did not say what he was thinking.
He looked at the treeline instead, at the dark between the trunks that even in daylight held its particular quality of presence, and he thought about the thing that had moved through the town last night and what it left behind in the places it had been, and he thought about a woman who went outside while it was out there and came back with mud on her boots and moisture on her shoulders and said nothing about it.
The red leaves lay on the temple floor.
Rey's lips kept moving.
Above them the grey ceiling pressed close, and the forest held its dark, and somewhere in the village behind them Dovan sat on a dead god's plinth and looked at nothing, and the day continued with the specific quality of a day in a place that had learned to treat its own wrongness as weather — present, expected, neither welcomed nor resisted, simply endured until dark came again.
