Joan headed to the same park entrance she and her friends had used for their picnic. A small shoulder bag rested against her side, while a newly bought novel lay in her hand.
After entering, she headed straight to the lake. She settled onto a bench overlooking the lake. The park was still relatively quiet at that hour.
The moment she sat, Joan started spacing out, mesmerized by the view upon her. As it wasn't her first time here, she was still stunned by the passage of time etched into the landscape. She sat still not doing anything to fill her time, simply watching the changing colors reflected on the water.
Amidst the tranquility, Joan's thoughts began to surface one after another slowly and in line, Like ripples spreading across the lake, one thought led naturally to the next. From her nostalgia to the past to plans for her future, and surprisingly, ended with her current standing point. With her transfer, and what opportunities could open with it, the money from her articles on the side and if she should try to write something friendlier for the audience like a novel or something similar, or should she focus on writing about maternity care, for now? Maybe she should write a more detailed plan another day, she still has multiple things she is still learning like French and accounting, writing articles and exchanging information with doctors and professors. If she doesn't plan soon, her mind is likely to scatter.
–For now I should just enjoy the moment.
She opened the novel and began to immerse herself in the interesting plot. Although she wasn't that impressed by it, perhaps she had simply grown accustomed to the countless twists and cliffhangers of modern web novels.
A couple of hours later, just as Joan's back began to ache, she began to stretch a little, as she decided to take a walk, and maybe buy a birthday cake before heading back. As a present for herself, Joan bought the new shoes she liked last time, they were ivory, with low heels and a simple design. Though Joan didn't have much clothes to match them with white shoes, she will solve that later. Anyway, she won't have the chance to wear it for quite some time.
"Today is your birthday?" Lily confirmed, surprised.
"You should have told us beforehand, we would have prepared something for you?" Helen interjected from the side.
"There is no need for the hassle, I bought a cake and had it divided, everyone will get a piece, offer a birthday wish, and that will be that" Joan answered casually.
"Are you really fine with this? We don't really attach a big thing to our birthdays, but isn't this the first one for you away from your home?" Elise said after a bite of her chicken.
She wondered if anyone in her own time still remembered this date. With this absurd thought, Joan shook her head dispelling the gloomy desire.
"It's fine, and if it bothers you, then how about another outing when your time allows it?"
"That is a wonderful idea, maybe after a while when things settle, we can ask to switch day with other nurses " Jinen
"Sounds good" Joan
The peaceful weekend ended sooner than she wished. By Monday morning, she was back in the maternity ward.
"Get out! Get out right now"
That is what Joan heard the moment she stepped into the maternity ward. Following the raged screams, she found the expectant mother assigned to one of their beds.
"Sally, please don't do this. I said I was sorry " besides the exhausted mother's bed, including Vera and another man, there was a young lady who was hiding behind the so-called husband.
"Brother please tell her"
"Evelyn, later. You should go now, Sally needs to rest before delivery."
