Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: engagement preparations

"Sorry I'm late" Edith said apologetically as she hurried over to help distribute breakfast.

"It's alright. You are not that late. Besides Agnes and the others are here to help" Joan reassured her.

"This is your breakfast, Mrs feather. If you remember any other foods that upset your stomach, please let me know." Edith said gently as she put the breakfast on a small wooden stand.

"Very well, Thank you" Mrs feather replied cheerfully.

Edith Knew the reason for her cheerfulness without asking, it's about her long awaited youngest son is about to visit, or that what she and Joan heard last time her family visited.

A hopeful spirit often did as much for a patient as medicine ever could, and few things lifted one's spirits more than family.

"Did you get a chance to eat breakfast?" seeing everyone having no problem, Joan asked as she stood beside Edith quite a distance from the patients' beds.

Seeing how late Edith was, she knew there was another emergency with a patient and she might not have breakfast yet.

" Don't worry.I ate earlier today, so i can hold out until lunch"

"I still have a couple of slices of bread here if you would like one" Joan said as she took her notes out.

"Sure, save one for me" Edith also began to scroll through her notes.

With no significant incident happening, the day carried on with the same rhythm, like every other day.

Less than an hour after their shifts ended, the girls gradually arrived at Lily's room, as they already planned.

"How did the family dinner go? And how about your future brother-in-law?"

"It went just fine, everyone was nice and polite. But why are you asking about my brother in law, Lucie?"

"Why do you think I'm asking? Obviously, I want to become your sister in law" Lucie answered with a playful smile. Just as everyone started laughing.

"Heh, surely you jest. Don't even think about it, If you became my sister in law, then who am I supposed to complain to about my in-laws?"

The usual chatter went on until the conversation was stirred to the dresses and makeup.

""I stopped by Mrs. Carter's shop yesterday. She said all the dresses will be ready tomorrow afternoon, So don't forget to ask for leave tomorrow, I don't think Mrs Clarke will mind if it's only for an hour" Helen said from the side after she took a sip of her tea.

"Did you see it? what do you think?"

"Unfortunately, I didn't. It was stored in the back at that moment and I was kind of in a hurry"

"Then it will be a surprise," Joan said as she took a cookie from the plate in front of her.

"You reminded me, Joan. Can I borrow some of your makeup for the engagement party?I really liked the makeup you wore at the New Year's party."

"Sure, we will be changing together anyway, so it's convenient" She wasn't particularly comfortable sharing personal items, but lending them for a special occasion or two didn't bother her much.

"Oh, right! Did you decide where you would reside after marriage?" Elise asked.

"Most likely, here in Manhattan. After all, he will be transferring to a school here also my job is also here"

"So you won't quit after marriage"

"Well, at least until the first baby, then we will see how it goes," Lily replied shyly.

Joan didn't comment on that. She didn't have any extreme ideals, everyone has their own way of living a fulfilling life, and she had no intention of judging anyone else's choices.
