The Purge Order's military halted its movement. Thousands of soldiers remained immobilised across the dark plains north of Aerindor, while war banners fluttered violently in the storm wind. Subsequently, the ground vibrated once more, experiencing a deep tremor reminiscent of a colossal heartbeat beneath the battlefield. Horses panicked immediately, and several soldiers fell as cracks propagated across the earth beneath them.
"What was that in the name of the gods?" one shouted. No response was given, as no one could determine the cause of the disturbance. At the front of the army, High Commander Varek slowly raised his hand, signalling the entire formation to come to a complete halt. Rain struck his silver armour as his keen eyes scanned the trembling terrain. Despite twenty years of combat experience, he sensed that something was significantly amiss.
An officer nearby swallowed nervously and asked, "Commander, should we withdraw?" Varek's expression hardened immediately. "The Purge Order does not retreat," he responded. Even as he spoke, the words sounded less convincing than usual. Another violent tremor erupted, followed by screams from the rear ranks as the earth split open. Black tendrils erupted from underground, dragging several soldiers beneath the surface before anyone could react. Chaos ensued immediately.
"Form defensive positions!" Rune weapons ignited across the battlefield, and archers fired blindly into the darkness. Nevertheless, the ground continued to shift. Then, something enormous began rising beneath the army—much larger and faster than anticipated.
Within Aerindor, Lyra immediately perceived the disturbance. She instinctively looked toward the northern horizon as her balance marker ignited again. Kael recognised her reaction instantly.
"Do you feel it too?" he inquired. Lyra nodded slowly.
"Something has awakened," she replied. Selene's face paled considerably.
"That cannot be possible," she whispered. The stranger confronted her sharply.
"What?" Her voice trembled as she uttered a single terrifying word: "Titan."
A heavy silence fell over the group. Rylan blinked in disbelief.
"Did you say, Titan?" There was another shake of the earth, instantly shattering windows. Beyond Aerindor's walls, a colossal black hand emerged from beneath the ground. Soldiers screamed in terror as entire siege weapons were flipped into the air like toys. Commander Varek stared upward in disbelief. The creature emerging from beneath the earth appeared ancient; its body was composed of black stone and living shadow, unnaturally fused, with glowing silver fractures across its massive form. Its eyes were vacant—emotionless. The Titan stood taller than the city walls, rendering the Purge Order's army insignificantly small in comparison.
One terrified soldier whispered, "How do we kill that?" Then, the Titan moved. A single step crushed dozens of soldiers immediately, causing chaos throughout the battlefield. Inside the city, alarm bells rang frantically.
The hunter captain stormed into the command hall moments later.
"The northern army is under attack!" he reported. Kael furrowed his brow.
"By what?" he asked. The captain appeared shaken despite attempting to maintain composure.
"A giant," he replied. Rylan rubbed his face.
"Of course, it is a giant. Why would it be anything else?" Selene moved quickly to the map spread across the table.
"If the Titan reaches Aerindor," she warned, "the city will be lost." Lyra looked at her.
"Have you seen one before?" she asked. Selene remained silent, indicating her understanding.
The stranger crossed his arms.
"Caelum deliberately awakened it," she stated. Her voice was quiet but firm.
"No," Selene replied. "He awakened the Core. Her eyes darkened.
"The Core awakened the Titan," she added. This distinction was significant, implying a much greater threat: the system itself was reacting, not merely individuals or anomalies.
Suddenly, Lyra's balance mark flashed violently again, accompanied by new messages:
"PRIMARY BALANCE THREAT DETECTED." Pain shot through her wrist, and images flooded her mind.
Ancient Titans were destroying civilisations, burying entire kingdoms beneath black storms. The system regularly reduced humanity when the imbalance grew too extreme, and above these destructions, the silver-eyed entity beneath the Core observed—watching, calculating, resetting.
Lyra staggered backwards, with Kael catching her immediately.
"What did you see?" he asked.
Lyra's breathing became uneven."
"The Titans," she whispered, "they are not monsters."
Selene looked sharply at her.
"They are corrections," Lyra explained. The room fell silent as everyone understood the implications; the Titans were not invaders but intended to erase the world when deemed unstable by the system.
Rylan whispered, "So, humanity has been failing the same test for centuries." The stranger answered coldly.
"Yes." Outside, the storm above Aerindor intensified, and suddenly the city gates burst open. A wounded Purge Order soldier stumbled inside, covered in blood and mud.
"Help us," he pleaded, collapsing to his knees, trembling violently.
"The army," he said with terror, "is slaughtering everyone."
Beneath the city, Caelum stood silently before the Core. The silver-eyed entity finally addressed him.
"Will you sacrifice humanity to save the future?"
