Cherreads

Chapter 11 - On the Edge of Humanity

A single ultraviolet lamp flickered weakly in the corner, casting pale light across the dusty room. Outside, the endless chorus of infected howls rolled through the night like distant thunder. Every sound reminded them that Mirekun City wasn't merely dangerous—it was alive, hungry, and waiting.

Shiori sat against the wall with Leon's machete resting across her lap. Her fingers traced the worn handle as though touching it might somehow bridge the distance between worlds. Across from her, Daichi sat with his back against a boarded window, exhaustion etched into every line of his face. Airi leaned against his shoulder, wrapped in a blanket and still haunted by the horrors she had witnessed. Haruto remained near the door, silently monitoring the biomarker whose warning lights continued to pulse an ominous red.

None of them spoke.

They were simply too tired.

Too broken.

Then it happened.

A piercing scream cut through the darkness outside.

Every head snapped upward.

The sound wasn't close enough to signal immediate danger, but it was near enough to send fresh terror through the room.

Instinctively, everyone moved toward the nearest gap between the wooden boards covering the window.

Shiori pressed her eye against the crack first.

And froze.

Far across the rooftops, illuminated by flashes of distant lightning, a lone figure was running.

No.

Not running.

Flying.

The silhouette vaulted across a gap that looked impossible for any normal human to clear. He landed smoothly on the next rooftop, rolled once, and immediately launched himself forward again. Twenty meters behind him, a pack of Nightmares surged across the buildings in pursuit.

Yet somehow they couldn't catch him.

The stranger moved with a precision that seemed almost supernatural.

One second he was sprinting along a rooftop edge.

The next he was wall-running across the side of a building.

Then he was gone.

Then visible again.

A ghost dancing through a nightmare.

Even the Nightmares struggled to predict his movements.

Shiori felt her heart slam against her chest.

For the first time since arriving in Mirekun City, something other than fear appeared inside her.

Hope.

Beside her, Daichi stared through the gap with wide eyes.

"That's impossible..." he muttered.

Even from this distance, he could tell the man's movements were beyond anything an athlete could accomplish.

Airi slowly lifted her head from her blanket.

For the first time in hours, genuine curiosity replaced the empty shock in her expression.

"Did you see that jump?" she whispered. "No human should be able to do that..."

Haruto narrowed his eyes.

The figure's style.

The rhythm.

The confidence.

It felt familiar.

Not identical.

But familiar.

Another rooftop leap carried the stranger across an impossible gap. The pursuing Nightmares overshot the landing entirely, several crashing into walls while their target disappeared into darkness once more.

Seconds later, the entire pack lost him.

The hunters slowed.

Confused.

Searching.

And eventually scattered.

Silence returned.

Inside the safehouse, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Shiori stood up so quickly that the others nearly jumped.

The hollow despair that had consumed her moments earlier was gone.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough to keep moving.

Enough to keep fighting.

She tightened her grip on the machete and looked toward the dark city beyond the window.

"I don't know who that was," she said quietly, determination returning to her voice, "but nobody survives like that in this city unless they're extraordinary."

Her silver-blue eyes never left the distant rooftops.

"And if someone like that is out there..."

Her hand tightened around the handle.

"...then maybe Leon-kun is too."

For the first time since entering Mirekun City, the group felt something stronger than fear.

Possibility.

And somewhere beyond the endless rooftops, hidden among the darkness and monsters, the mysterious runner had left behind a single spark of hope.

Rain hammered the rooftop as thunder rolled across the ruined skyline of Mirekun City.

For several long seconds after Leon's warning, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sounds were the distant groans of infected and the steady rhythm of water striking concrete.

Leon stood with his back to them, shoulders heavy beneath the storm. Without another word, he began walking toward the far edge of the rooftop.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

As though every step carried a burden none of them could see.

Shiori felt unease crawl through her chest.

"Leon-kun...?"

Her voice barely escaped above the rain.

He didn't answer.

He didn't even look back.

Airi wrapped her arms around herself, watching him disappear deeper into the darkness.

"Something feels wrong," she whispered.

Daichi's eyes narrowed.

For the first time since finding him, his instincts were screaming.

Leon wasn't acting like someone who had finally reunited with friends.

He was acting like someone preparing for something.

Or someone saying goodbye.

Haruto remained silent, studying every movement.

The posture.

The pace.

The tension hidden beneath every step.

Nothing about it felt safe.

Then the sound came.

A low growl echoed somewhere below.

Another followed.

Then another.

And another.

The rooftop vibrated beneath their feet.

Everyone froze.

Far below, movement spread through the streets like a dark tide.

Shadows emerged from alleyways.

Figures climbed over abandoned vehicles.

More appeared from shattered buildings.

Dozens became hundreds.

Hundreds became thousands.

An ocean of infected was moving through the city.

All in the same direction.

Toward Leon.

Shiori's heart skipped a beat.

"They're following him..."

The realization left her lips as little more than a whisper.

At the rooftop's edge, Leon finally stopped.

Rain poured down his face.

Behind him, the infected continued gathering.

The streets vanished beneath their numbers.

Buildings crawled with movement.

The city itself seemed drawn toward him.

Airi stared in horror.

"That's not normal..."

Haruto's expression darkened.

"No," he said quietly.

"It isn't."

The infected weren't chasing random prey.

They weren't wandering.

They were responding.

To him.

A cold wind swept across the rooftop.

Leon slowly turned his head.

Not enough to fully face them.

Just enough for his voice to reach them.

"Go back."

The words landed harder than any scream.

Shiori blinked.

"What...?"

"I said go back."

His voice remained calm.

Cold.

Emotionless.

Another wave of infected surged onto nearby rooftops.

Daichi took an angry step forward.

"The hell are you talking about? We crossed worlds to find you!"

Airi's breathing quickened as more creatures climbed the surrounding buildings.

"We can't leave now!"

Haruto kept his eyes fixed on Leon.

"Then explain."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Lightning flashed across the sky.

The white light illuminated half of Leon's face.

His eyes glowed faintly beneath the rain.

Not human.

Not entirely.

And suddenly Haruto understood.

The infected weren't following him.

They were answering him.

Leon lowered his head.

His next words were almost lost beneath the storm.

"Because to them..."

Thunder exploded overhead.

"...I'm not human anymore."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Even the others forgot to breathe.

Shiori shook her head immediately.

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

"No, that's not true."

Leon looked at her.

The glow within his eyes flickered.

"You only saw what I allowed you to see."

Behind him, the horde erupted into a chorus of roars.

The sound rolled across the city like an earthquake.

Airi instinctively stepped backward.

Fear crept into her voice.

"It feels like they're listening to him..."

Daichi clenched his fists.

"Then answer me."

Rain streamed down his face.

"Are you one of them or not?"

Leon closed his eyes.

For the first time, genuine pain appeared across his expression.

Not physical pain.

Something deeper.

Something worse.

When he finally spoke, his voice sounded exhausted.

"...I don't know anymore."

The words shattered something inside Shiori.

Not because she believed them.

Because she knew he did.

She stepped forward.

Then another step.

Ignoring the infected.

Ignoring the danger.

Ignoring every warning.

Tears mixed with rain on her cheeks.

"I don't care."

Leon looked up.

Her voice shook.

But her determination didn't.

"I don't care if you're human."

Another step.

"I don't care if you're infected."

Another.

"I don't care what you've become."

The horde continued climbing behind him.

An endless wall of teeth and claws.

Yet Shiori never looked away from him.

"You came back."

Her voice cracked.

"You protected us."

More tears fell.

"And you still worry about us even now."

Haruto's eyes widened.

Daichi started forward.

Airi grabbed his arm.

Neither of them dared interrupt.

Because this wasn't a conversation anymore.

It was a battle.

Not against the infected.

Against the darkness inside Leon himself.

Shiori stopped only a few meters away.

"You're still Leon-kun."

The words struck harder than any weapon.

For a brief second, the glow in his eyes weakened.

The storm seemed to pause.

The city held its breath.

Then Leon looked past her.

Toward the impossible horde gathering behind him.

Toward the monsters waiting for a signal.

Toward the nightmare that had followed him for years.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely audible.

"Then prove it."

He turned away.

His hand closed around the handle of his machete.

The familiar weapon slid free with a metallic hiss.

The infected roared.

The entire rooftop shook.

Dangerous energy rolled from Leon like a living thing.

Yet he didn't retreat.

He stepped forward.

Directly toward the approaching horde.

"Stay alive."

Those were the only words he gave them.

Then he began walking.

One man.

Against thousands.

Shiori's eyes widened.

"LEON-KUN!"

The horde answered first.

A deafening roar exploded across the rooftop as countless infected charged through the rain.

And Leon Mercer walked forward to meet them.

The rooftop shook beneath the weight of the approaching horde.

Every direction was blocked.

Infected climbed walls, spilled over ledges, and emerged from neighboring rooftops until the entire skyline seemed alive with movement. Their growls merged into a single horrifying chorus that echoed through the rain-soaked ruins of Mirekun City.

Shiori's heart nearly stopped.

"Leon-kun!"

Her voice vanished beneath the roar of the horde.

Behind them, more infected appeared.

Ahead of them, more infected appeared.

There was nowhere left to run.

Daichi slowly backed toward the others, his fists clenched despite knowing they would accomplish nothing against numbers like these.

"We're trapped..."

Airi's breathing became uneven as panic threatened to overwhelm her.

"This isn't a horde anymore..."

Haruto's eyes scanned the battlefield one final time before arriving at the same conclusion.

"It's an execution."

Yet Leon stood perfectly still.

Rain streamed down his face.

His head remained lowered.

His breathing grew heavier.

Then his body suddenly jerked.

A violent tremor ran through his arms.

Dark veins spread beneath his skin.

The air itself seemed to tense.

Shiori froze.

Something was changing.

Something she had already seen once before.

Something that terrified her even now.

Leon slowly raised his head.

His eyes glowed crimson.

Not entirely human.

Not entirely monster.

Caught somewhere in between.

His gaze swept across the endless sea of infected.

Then toward his friends.

A distorted growl escaped his throat.

"You wanted proof...?"

Lightning split the sky.

For an instant, his entire figure was illuminated against the storm.

Then he moved.

The rooftop erupted into chaos.

Leon launched himself directly into the advancing horde.

The impact alone sent infected tumbling backward. Bodies crashed into one another as the front ranks collapsed beneath the force of his charge.

Airi gasped.

Daichi stared in disbelief.

Even Haruto's composure cracked.

Leon wasn't fighting like a normal survivor.

He wasn't fighting like a soldier.

He moved like something born from the same nightmare as the creatures surrounding him.

Every motion was impossibly fast.

Every strike created space.

Every second bought the group another chance to survive.

The infected surged toward him from all sides.

Leon met them head-on.

The storm swallowed much of the battle, turning it into flashes of motion illuminated by lightning. One moment he vanished into the mass of bodies. The next he emerged somewhere else entirely, forcing the horde back through sheer aggression and relentless momentum.

Shiori watched with tears forming in her eyes.

Everyone else saw a monster.

She saw something different.

She saw a man destroying himself to keep others alive.

A man fighting a battle he never wanted.

A man who had carried hell inside him for years.

Minutes seemed to pass in seconds.

Gradually the pressure eased.

The endless wave slowed.

Then stopped.

Rain continued to fall.

Silence slowly returned.

The rooftop had become a battlefield of broken concrete and fallen infected.

At the center stood Leon.

Alone.

Breathing heavily.

His entire body trembled.

The crimson glow in his eyes flickered violently.

For one moment they looked human.

The next they burned red again.

Something inside him was losing control.

Something dangerous.

Shiori took a step forward.

Then another.

Ignoring Daichi's warning.

Ignoring Airi's frightened protests.

Ignoring Haruto's concerned expression.

She walked straight toward him.

Toward the thing everyone else feared.

Toward the person she refused to abandon.

"Leon-kun..."

Her voice was soft.

Gentle.

The same voice that had reached him before.

Leon turned toward her.

His clawed hand twitched.

The glow in his eyes pulsed.

For a brief second, recognition appeared.

Then pain.

Then fear.

Not fear of her.

Fear for her.

His entire body shook.

Dark energy rippled beneath his skin.

The storm intensified.

When he finally spoke, his voice sounded broken.

Fragile.

Desperate.

"Run..."

Shiori stopped only a few steps away.

Tears mixed with rain on her cheeks.

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Leon staggered backward.

The glow surged brighter.

"Please..."

His voice cracked.

"Before I..."

He couldn't finish.

Another violent tremor ripped through his body.

Haruto immediately understood.

Whatever Leon was fighting was stronger than before.

And it was winning.

The rooftop fell silent once more.

Shiori stood her ground.

Leon struggled against the darkness consuming him.

And somewhere within those crimson eyes, the last traces of the man she loved were still fighting to remain alive.

The rooftop fell into an uneasy silence after the slaughter. Rain washed over shattered concrete and scattered corpses while blood flowed through cracks like crimson streams. For a few brief seconds, only Leon's heavy breathing could be heard.

Then the night screamed.

One shriek echoed across the skyline.

Then another.

And another.

Soon dozens of terrifying cries were answering each other across the ruined rooftops of Mirekun City.

Haruto's expression changed instantly.

His eyes widened.

"...No," he said quietly. "This is bad."

Daichi turned toward the sound, fists tightening despite the fear gnawing at his chest.

"Don't tell me..."

Dark shapes began appearing on distant rooftops.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Then dozens more.

Red eyes opened throughout the darkness.

Airi's face turned pale.

"Nightmares!! A whole pack!!"

The creatures emerged from every direction, crouching low against rain-soaked rooftops. Their elongated limbs scraped concrete while glowing eyes locked onto the group. Drool dripped from rows of jagged teeth as they slowly formed a circle around the rooftop.

Shiori instinctively stepped back.

Yet her gaze never left Leon.

"...Leon-kun..."

Leon stood motionless in the center of the battlefield.

Blood dripped from his claws.

His head remained lowered.

His breathing was slow.

Heavy.

Dangerously unstable.

Then his head slowly tilted toward the approaching Nightmares.

A low growl escaped his throat.

The sound barely resembled a human voice.

Black veins spread beneath his skin.

His entire body trembled.

"...You touch them..."

The rooftop vibrated beneath his feet.

Rain exploded upward from the concrete.

Then Leon raised his head.

His crimson eyes burned like fire.

"And I'll erase you."

The Nightmares answered with shrieks and charged all at once.

The first creature launched itself through the rain.

Leon vanished.

For a split second he disappeared completely from sight.

Then he reappeared in midair.

His clawed hand collided with the Nightmare's face and the impact drove the creature into the rooftop with explosive force. Concrete shattered beneath it as its body disappeared into a crater.

A second Nightmare attacked from behind.

Leon spun.

The creature was hurled across the rooftop and smashed through a rusted ventilation unit.

Daichi's eyes widened.

"He's fighting Nightmares like they're ordinary infected..."

Three more charged together.

Leon met them head-on.

The rooftop erupted into chaos.

Bodies flew through the rain.

Concrete exploded.

Metal twisted.

Every Nightmare that attacked was thrown aside by overwhelming force.

Airi stood frozen.

Her entire body trembled.

"I can't watch this..."

Yet she couldn't look away.

The battle only became more violent.

Nightmares poured onto the rooftop from every direction.

Leon charged directly into them.

His movements became faster.

More savage.

More monstrous.

Less human.

The creatures attacked in coordinated waves.

Leon tore through them like a force of nature.

Blood mixed with rain.

Broken bodies crashed into walls.

The rooftop shook beneath every collision.

Haruto watched in stunned silence.

For the first time he truly understood why Leon had survived where countless others had fallen.

Because Leon wasn't merely surviving the nightmare anymore.

He had become something capable of fighting it.

Meanwhile Shiori never looked away from him.

Everyone else saw a monster.

She saw pain.

Every roar sounded like suffering.

Every movement looked forced.

Every second felt like Leon was fighting himself as much as the creatures surrounding him.

"...Leon-kun..."

Her voice was barely audible.

Then the battle escalated again.

More Nightmares arrived.

Too many.

Far too many.

Leon suddenly stopped moving.

The rooftop trembled.

His body lowered slightly.

Muscles tightened.

Dark energy pulsed around him.

Haruto's eyes widened immediately.

"EVERYONE BACK!"

Before anyone could react, Leon launched himself into the sky.

Lightning split the clouds.

For one brief second his silhouette became visible against the storm.

And the group finally saw the truth.

Not a human.

Not even half-human.

A true nightmare.

His body had become larger and more monstrous. Massive spikes protruded from his back. Sections of exposed bone formed armor across his frame. His claws were longer. Sharper. More unnatural. His entire silhouette resembled the final evolution of the horror he had spent years fighting.

Airi screamed.

"THAT'S NOT HUMAN!"

Daichi stood frozen.

"...That's his real form..."

Even Haruto looked shaken.

"...A true evolved Nightmare..."

Only Shiori stepped forward.

Tears filled her eyes.

Yet a faint smile appeared on her face.

"...Leon-kun."

Then Leon fell.

The impact was catastrophic.

He struck the rooftop like a meteor.

The entire building shook.

A shockwave exploded outward across the battlefield.

Nearby Nightmares were launched across rooftops and smashed into walls. Windows shattered throughout nearby buildings. Cracks raced across the rooftop beneath the force of the collision.

Dust and rain filled the air.

When the cloud finally cleared, the surviving Nightmares were retreating.

Fear.

Actual fear.

The predators feared him.

Silence slowly returned.

Only rain remained.

Leon stood alone in the center of the ruined battlefield.

Blood covered him from head to toe.

His chest rose and fell heavily.

The crimson glow in his eyes flickered.

Normal.

Red.

Normal.

Red again.

His body trembled.

Control slipping.

Returning.

Then slipping again.

The others stood frozen behind him.

Airi could barely breathe.

Daichi was speechless.

Haruto struggled to comprehend what he had witnessed.

But Shiori moved first.

Like she always did.

Ignoring the blood.

Ignoring the corpses.

Ignoring the monster everyone else saw.

She walked through the ruined battlefield toward him.

Step by step.

Until only a few feet separated them.

Leon slowly looked at her.

His claws twitched.

His breathing remained unstable.

Dangerous.

Yet Shiori didn't stop.

Her silver hair swayed gently in the rain.

Her eyes never showed fear.

Only concern.

Only warmth.

Only unwavering trust.

"You protected us again, Leon-kun."

Her voice was soft.

Gentle.

But those words struck harder than any weapon.

The storm continued raging around them.

And for the first time since the battle began—

The monster hesitated.
