Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The One-Day Trial

The morning sun had barely risen over the northern mountains when Kael and Gohim returned to the cave. The giant wolf was already waiting at the entrance, sitting silently with his piercing blue eyes fixed on them.

"You came back," the wolf said.

"We're here to become strong enough to save the captives," Kael replied.

The wolf nodded.

"Then listen carefully. I will not be joining you."

Gohim looked surprised.

"You're not?"

The wolf shook his head.

"This cave is my home. My duty is to guard its entrance and prevent foolish travelers from wandering inside. If I abandon this place, others may enter and suffer the same fate."

He looked toward the darkness beyond the cave.

"The battle against the Watcher belongs to you."

Kael nodded in understanding.

"We understand."

The wolf turned toward Gohim.

"But before you challenge him..."

"...you must survive my training."

Without warning, the wolf's body vanished.

Gohim spun around.

"What?!"

A voice echoed from every direction.

"My spiritual ability..."

"...is False Mirage."

Suddenly ten identical wolves appeared around Gohim.

Every one of them looked real.

Every one of them released spiritual pressure.

Gohim couldn't tell which one was genuine.

Then another voice echoed.

"And Illusion."

The entire forest changed.

The ground disappeared beneath Gohim's feet.

Towering cliffs surrounded him.

The sky turned crimson.

A hundred enemies charged toward him.

Gohim instinctively reached for his sword.

The wolf's voice thundered.

"No."

"You rely on your sword too much."

Before Gohim could react, one of the wolves struck him from behind.

He rolled across the ground.

"Too slow."

Another kick.

Another fall.

Another illusion.

Hours passed.

Every attack forced Gohim to think instead of reacting blindly.

Sometimes the enemies weren't real.

Sometimes the ground beneath him disappeared.

Sometimes the wolf himself vanished among dozens of perfect copies.

Every mistake earned another bruise.

"Again," the wolf ordered.

Gohim stood.

Again.

The wolf attacked.

Again.

By midday Gohim could barely breathe.

His legs shook violently.

The wolf showed no mercy.

"You are fast..."

"...but not fast enough."

He disappeared again.

Gohim closed his eyes.

Instead of looking...

...he listened.

A faint movement.

Leaves.

Wind.

One heartbeat.

Gohim stepped sideways.

The wolf's claw missed him by inches.

The wolf smiled.

"Good."

"For the first time..."

"...you thought before moving."

The training became even harsher.

The wolf made Gohim sprint across cliffs.

Leap over rivers.

Carry enormous logs while avoiding invisible attacks.

If he hesitated...

He failed.

If he panicked...

He failed.

If he stopped thinking...

He failed.

By sunset Gohim collapsed onto the ground.

Every muscle burned.

The wolf walked toward him.

"You've improved."

Gohim laughed weakly.

"I feel like I'm dying."

"That means your body is changing."

---

Meanwhile, Kael sat beneath a large tree with the Guardian Manual resting on his lap.

He slowly turned each page.

Most of what he saw described Guardian history.

Ancient battles.

Forgotten kingdoms.

Then something caught his attention.

A sentence written in faded ink.

"Only those who channel spiritual energy into these pages shall uncover what is hidden."

Kael placed his hand on the book.

A stream of spiritual energy flowed into it.

The pages suddenly glowed.

New writing slowly appeared.

Kael's eyes widened.

"So this book has another layer..."

He continued reading.

Near the back of the manual, he discovered a hidden compartment built into the cover.

Inside were two small silver pills.

A note rested beneath them.

"Revival Pills."

"Reserved only for desperate times."

"They restore strength and stabilize spiritual energy in those whose bodies have been completely exhausted."

"Use only when death is near."

Kael carefully placed both pills inside a small pouch.

"They may save our lives."

He continued reading.

Soon another section appeared.

Guardian Technique: Crescent Spirit Blast.

The technique explained how to compress spiritual energy along the edge of a sword until it became unstable.

At the perfect moment...

The energy could be released as a powerful blast capable of striking distant enemies.

Kael smiled faintly.

"For someone with years of swordsmanship..."

"...this should be possible."

He stood.

Holding his sword with both hands, he gathered spiritual energy along its blade.

The first attempt failed.

The energy scattered before release.

The second attempt produced only a weak wave that disappeared after a few meters.

Kael adjusted his breathing.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Hours passed.

His control became more precise.

Finally—

SHHHHHH!

A brilliant crescent of blue energy shot from his blade.

It raced across the clearing and split a massive boulder cleanly in half before disappearing into the distance.

Kael looked at the shattered rock.

"Not enough."

He practiced again.

Each attempt became faster.

More controlled.

More powerful.

By sunset, he could release the attack almost effortlessly.

He sheathed his sword.

"This should be enough for tomorrow."

---

As darkness covered the mountains, Kael returned to the cave entrance.

Gohim was sitting against a tree, exhausted beyond words.

His clothes were torn.

His hands were covered in scratches.

But his eyes were sharper than before.

Kael noticed his improved stance immediately.

"You've changed."

Gohim smiled tiredly.

"I had no choice."

The wolf looked between them.

"You've both grown stronger."

Kael nodded.

"So have you taught him everything?"

The wolf shook his head.

"No."

"I taught him enough to survive."

"The rest..."

"...must be learned in battle."

Silence settled over the mountain.

Then Gohim reached into his bag and pulled out the Guardian Manual.

He looked at Kael.

"Did you find anything?"

Kael handed him the book.

"I found two Revival Pills and a Guardian sword technique."

Gohim's eyes widened.

"What about techniques for me?"

Kael pointed toward a page near the center of the book.

"There is one."

Gohim opened it.

The title read:

Guardian Art: Resonance Step.

Kael smiled faintly.

"You don't have enough time to master it."

"But if you understand its foundation..."

"...it may save your life tomorrow."

Gohim closed the book and looked toward the dark cave.

Tomorrow...

They would enter the Watcher's domain.

Not to train.

Not to retreat.

But to rescue every innocent person before the eighth day came to an end.

The mountain fell silent.

That's a better direction. It avoids making Gohim become overpowered after a single day of training and keeps his growth realistic. Here's how you can end Chapter 8:

---

The sky gradually darkened until only the moon illuminated the mountain.

Neither Kael nor Gohim stopped training.

The wolf's False Mirage and Illusion techniques became even more difficult to overcome.

Dozens of copies surrounded Gohim at once.

Sometimes they attacked.

Sometimes they simply stood still, forcing him to decide which one was real.

One wrong decision always ended with him flat on the ground.

Again.

And again.

The wolf never showed mercy.

"Speed without judgment is useless," he said.

"You must learn to think while your body is moving."

Hours passed.

The moon climbed higher into the night sky.

Gohim's breathing became heavier with every exercise.

His muscles screamed in pain.

His legs trembled after every sprint.

Yet he refused to stop.

By midnight, he could barely stand.

The wolf finally raised his paw.

"Enough."

Gohim collapsed onto one knee, breathing heavily.

"...Is... is the training over?"

"For tonight."

Kael also returned from his own training, carrying his sword over his shoulder.

His clothes were damp with sweat, but his eyes remained calm.

The wolf looked at both of them.

"You have until sunrise."

"Eat."

"Sleep."

"Recover."

Gohim frowned.

"But the captives—"

Kael interrupted him.

"If we enter that cave exhausted, we will lose before reaching the Watcher."

He looked directly into Gohim's eyes.

"A tired warrior makes slow decisions."

"And slow decisions get people killed."

Gohim lowered his head.

"...I understand."

The wolf nodded in approval.

"Rest is part of training."

"Even predators sleep before hunting."

The three of them shared a simple meal near a small campfire outside the cave.

No one spoke for a long while.

The mountain was unusually quiet.

After eating, Gohim looked at his hands.

"They still don't feel much stronger."

Kael sat beside him.

"They aren't."

Gohim looked disappointed.

"So... all of this training only made me a little stronger?"

Kael smiled faintly.

"It made you a little faster."

"A little sharper."

"A little calmer."

"But strength is not always measured by power."

He placed a hand on Gohim's shoulder.

"I've watched you closely these past few days."

"There is enormous potential sleeping inside you."

Gohim looked at him.

"But it remains dormant."

"It cannot be forced awake."

"It must awaken naturally."

"When the time is right..."

"When your body, mind, and spirit become one..."

"The power hidden inside you will answer your call."

Gohim listened quietly.

Kael looked toward the dark entrance of the cave.

"I believe the battles ahead..."

"...will awaken the powers you have yet to discover."

The wolf nodded in agreement.

"Potential is like a blade hidden beneath stone."

"You cannot pull it free with impatience."

"You must become worthy of wielding it."

Gohim slowly clenched his fist.

"I'll become strong enough."

Kael stood.

"And tomorrow..."

"We begin proving it."

The campfire slowly burned lower.

One by one, they closed their eyes to rest.

before the battles ahead.
