Katy, Texas
On a television screen, a game could be seen unfolding thousands of miles away at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina, in which the Clemson Tigers football team was playing at home against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
"And we find ourselves in what is probably the last play of this matchup with only 25 seconds remaining in the third quarter," the commentator's voice could be heard, resonating through the house's sound system while the people sitting there found themselves watching the screen ahead of them with total concentration.
Since it was Saturday, Wyatt's entire family had gathered to watch Wyatt's game while having lunch.
"Come on, boy, you've already got it," Rudy said, leaving his fork suspended in the air for a moment, concentrating completely on the last play of the matchup.
"You'd better eat what you have on your fork before they steal it from you, sweetheart," said Caitlyn's voice, who was sitting next to her husband while watching how he left his fork suspended in the air.
In front of him, Max was wagging his tail with his attention completely fixed on the piece of chicken that was on the fork, preparing himself to jump and eat it at any moment, letting out light barks, "Arf! Arf!"
Hearing that, Rudy immediately brought the piece of chicken to his mouth, and it disappeared, causing Max to stop wagging his tail as a whimpering sound came from his mouth and he put on puppy eyes, seeking to get a piece of chicken.
Seeing the look the dog was giving in his direction, Rudy's heart softened a bit while he picked up a small piece of chicken, prepared to give him some, until a voice was heard from the kitchen table.
"Don't you dare give him any, it's bad for him," Elena said before Rudy could even bring the piece of chicken near Max's snout.
Noticing that he had been caught, Rudy stopped doing what he was doing to then say in Max's direction, "I'm sorry, boy." Understanding that he would not get any bite, Max simply laid back down against the rug, focusing his gaze back on the television screen just like the rest of the people present in the living room.
On it, one could see how Wyatt received the ball and the offensive line clashed with the defense of the Demon Deacons team.
Wyatt, in possession of the ball, dropped back until he was at the height of the running backs, who dropped back along with him to begin running in two opposite directions.
That play briefly bewildered the Demon Deacons' defense, who for a short moment did not know which of the two to bring down, causing the defense to split in two different directions, seeking to catch both.
But amidst the sea of white jerseys that were desperately seeking to bring down the two, it was seen how the orange patch representing Wyatt accelerated his pace, cutting and dodging the player who was ahead of him.
After that, he only had to run a few more yards to finally be able to safely step into the end zone, revealing the ball he had in his hands, scoring what would be the team's 4th touchdown.
56-7 was the score that could be seen in the corner of the television, demonstrating that it had practically been a complete slaughter in this game.
Save for the touchdown scored by the Demon Deacons' quarterback Tanner Price, which was received by wide receiver Sherman Ragland III, the Clemson defense had completely suffocated their rivals' offense.
Despite the best attempts of the Demon Deacons' coach, even going as far as changing quarterbacks three times, he could do nothing else but watch how his team was completely slaughtered at Memorial Stadium.
With a few seconds remaining, the Demon Deacons' offense entered the field again, and as soon as the quarterback received the ball, the referee's whistle was heard, bringing the matchup between both teams to an end.
"And so this game, which since the second quarter had lost all suspense, has come to an end," the commentator said in the direction of all the viewers who were watching the game from their homes.
"Wyatt Sterling demonstrates once more why he is the number 1 recruit and why all the major collegiate sports programs fought over him," the second commentator said while the ESPN cameras showed the stands of the entire stadium, which was overrun by Clemson fans with the iconic orange jerseys, celebrating the slaughter they had just witnessed.
"I'll say, David. Despite the unfortunate accident that Tajh Boyd suffered in week 3 of the season, the fans can rest easy with Wyatt at the helm of the team's offense," Rece Davis said in front of the cameras.
"Speaking of Tajh, it seems the injury turned out to be nothing more than a concussion, which will keep him off the field until week 7," Jesse Palmer also told the cameras, reminding viewers of the latest updates from the Clemson team.
While saying that, Rece brought his finger to his ear as he listened to the words of the producer. "And it seems we have Samantha Ponder with the player of the game, let's go to you, Sam," he informed, so that afterwards the camera changed to show a blonde woman with microphone in hand next to Wyatt, who still had labored breathing after the game but with a great smile on his face.
"There he is," Elena said excitedly, while her attention focused on Wyatt, who was responding to the questions thrown by Samantha.
"Tell us, Wyatt, how does it feel to be the player of the game, and more importantly, what are your expectations for the team following this resounding victory?" Sam asked with a professional smile before pointing her microphone in Wyatt's direction.
"Well, we came from preparing all week, analyzing the Wake Forest team and practicing specific plays for this matchup, so this is nothing more than the result of our effort and the confidence we have among each other," Wyatt responded with a relaxed smile while keeping his eyes on the camera.
"And what a result it was, with your statistics from this game you could even take home the quarterback of the week award," Samantha said excitedly, while on the television screens of all the viewers, Wyatt's total statistics so far this season could be seen.
Wyatt Sterling (QB)Passing yards: 786Rushing yards: 84 yardsCompletions / attempts: 40/52 (76.9%)Touchdowns: 9 by air, 1 by ground
Completely solid statistics which demonstrated that Wyatt, little by little, had begun to dominate and take over the reins of the Tigers team in a quiet manner.
"Whew," Rudy whistled low upon looking with more scrutiny at Wyatt's statistics in what was his debut season in a more professional environment such as the ACC.
"Those numbers are solid," Ed said, his voice denoting a clear nuance of pride upon seeing how much his son had progressed in these last few months in which he had not been at home.
"He knows very well how to move the chains," Rudy said with the same nuance of pride in his voice while Wyatt's interview continued.
After responding to a few more questions, Wyatt withdrew to follow the rest of his teammates in the direction of the locker rooms.
"And there you have it, Wyatt Sterling with a great game in week 4, making Clemson's winning streak stay valid for one more week," Samantha finished saying to the microphone while they cut back to Jesse and David.
"A great game by Wyatt Sterling, who was the author of a great slaughter in this game, which will be talked about a lot in the coming days," David said with a smile, knowing that the segment was gradually coming to an end.
"I couldn't have said it better, David. And also in other news, I am informed that from Alumni Stadium in Massachusetts, the Boston College Eagles have just lost against the Florida State Seminoles," Jesse said while they gave him more details from the earpiece he wore in his ear.
"48-34 was the final score of the matchup, which ended with the bitter defeat of the Eagles," he finished saying while he ceded the floor to David.
"And with that, Boston's record moves to 2-2, a very mixed record which seems to indicate that the losing streak could extend even further than it already has," Jesse said, recalling that they had previously also lost against the USC Trojans.
While the commentators continued discussing the games and Wyatt's family continued chatting about the victory, in another place, the situation was completely different.
Framingham, Massachusetts
"Goddammit!" Matty Bennett roared, throwing the beer can he had in his hand straight to the floor, completely staining the rug in the living room, where the score of 48-34 could still be seen in large letters.
"If only the cornerback hadn't let the receiver catch that pass," Matty kept ranting at the screen, referring to a specific play in the 3rd quarter of the game.
The score was 24-20 with Boston needing only a touchdown to be ahead in the matchup, but at that moment, Boston's defense made an error, causing the Florida team to score another touchdown and losing the matchup.
"I don't know, Dad, the game looked very close," said the voice of a teenager, who had also been watching the game, but a great boredom could be seen in his gaze.
"That was a humiliation. Ever since Matt Ryan left, the team went downhill," Matty roared in the direction of his son, since he still did not entirely accept the idea of the defeat.
"I don't know, honestly anyone would panic if they saw a mob of men heading at them with the sole purpose of tackling them," the voice of another person was heard, which belonged to a second teenager who was sitting next to Johnny.
"You keep quiet too, Ted," Matty said, still sulking over the team's defeat, and when he brought his hand to his mouth, he realized that he had thrown his beer to the floor.
"Susan, bring me another can!" he yelled in the direction of the kitchen. "Also bring something for us, Ma," Johnny said quickly.
Coming down the stairs, Blaire managed to hear the last comment and headed to the living room, looking at how her uncle and her two cousins were sprawled out like three slackers on the sofa with their gaze fixed on the screen.
"You know you could very well stand up and go get it yourselves, right?" she said, crossing her arms and looking in the direction of the three until Susan appeared carrying a tray with the drinks.
"Here you go, boys. I hope you are hungry because dinner will be ready soon," Susan said with a smile while passing their drinks to each one.
"Aunt Susy, with that you only make these slackers become more complacent," Blaire said, pointing at the three. "Hey, that's not true," Ted said while he was still sprawled out on the sofa, without even bothering to try to stand up.
"Oh, Blaire dear, this is no trouble, believe me, I do it with all the love in the world," Susan said with a smile on her face, looking at each of them.
"Quiet, young lady, don't you see that Boston just lost," Matty said while moving his head, since both women prevented him from seeing the television.
"That idiot Rettig, after 4 years, doesn't know how to move the offense," Matty roared, cursing the player.
"For God's sake, Uncle Matty, it's just a game that fosters sexism and violence," Blaire said exasperated, with no filters on her tongue.
"She's right, the only notable thing are the cheerleaders and their pom-poms," Ted said from the side, recalling the routines and the mini-skirts, making Blaire roll her eyes.
"Typical response from a fanboy," Matty said exasperated, while on the screen, the result of the Clemson game was shown along with the slaughter they inflicted upon Wake Forest.
"See? If we had a quarterback like him, things would be different," Matty said, pointing to the screen on which the interview that Wyatt had given to the television could be seen.
Then the last play was shown, in which Wyatt, running with the ball, dodged the defense to comfortably score a new touchdown.
"For God's sake, it's just a game," Blaire said exasperated, bringing her hands to her head, knowing there was no way her uncle would change his mind.
After that, the Bennett house returned to its usual chaos, with Matty who kept talking about Boston's offense and how they should change quarterbacks urgently, to Blaire's exasperation.
