Chapter 27 - Devouring Canopy

As the main body of the sect disciples began to cluster into their rigid hierarchies, Egneel flickered into visibility. With a faint, mischievous hum, the ancient phoenix-dragon bypassed Kail entirely and landed with surprising grace on Xu Guifei's shoulder, his tiny, shimmering form blending perfectly with the bioluminescent flora of the woods.

Without warning, Egneel's head snapped toward a low-hanging branch. Hanging there was a fruit that pulsed with a vibrant, neon-pink hue, radiating a scent that was sickly sweet, like honey mixed with ozone. Before Kail could utter a command, Egneel snatched the fruit and swallowed it in a single gulp.

The reaction was instantaneous. The very ground beneath them shuddered. The massive, crystalline trees— which had stood like statues only moments before— began to groan with a sound like grinding tectonic plates. Their roots, thick as castle walls, tore themselves from the obsidian soil, transforming into jagged, serpentine limbs. They didn't just move; they hungered. The forest floor liquefied into a maw of pulsing biomass, devouring the nearest sect disciples who hadn't even realized the danger before they were pulled into the earth.

"Run!" Kail roared, his voice cutting through the rising cacophony of screams.

Chaos erupted. Tornadoes of razor-sharp leaves and pressurized spirit-air began to spiral across the landscape, tearing through the sect formations. Panic turned the inner disciples into wild animals. Some ran blindly into the path of the lashing roots, while others, driven by terror, began to blindly cast spirit-arts at the trees, only to watch as the forest fed on the energy of their attacks, growing larger and more ferocious with every strike.

Hu Lin, displaying the cowardice beneath his arrogance, didn't fight. He used a defensive talisman to shield himself, callously shoving two of his own outer-circle lackeys into the path of a lashing root-whip to create a gap. As he and his elite inner-circle team vaulted onto a massive, stable boulder near the perimeter, he glanced back. His eyes narrowed with dark delight as he spotted Kail and Guifei struggling against the encroaching devastation.

"Egneel! Transform!" Kail commanded, pulling his blade as a massive branch swung toward them like a falling spire.

He didn't wait. He channeled the power of the [Sky Palm] technique he had unearthed in the Ancient Mansion— a move of crushing, atmospheric pressure— and slammed his palm against the charging timber. The impact created a shockwave that cracked the very air, forcing the tree to shatter into splinters.

But Egneel was not moving. The phoenix-dragon's body was glowing with an intense, uncontrollable pink aura. He shivered, his form flickering. "I can't!" Egneel gasped, his voice straining. "That fruit... it triggered a breakthrough in my bloodline! I am locked in this form, but the energy... it's going to be massive. I can only carry one person! "

"get Guifei out of here!" Kail said .

"I won't leave you!" Guifei cried, gripping Kail's arm, her bow drawn as a tornado of debris tore the ground around them.

"We stay together!" Kail shouted.

A massive vortex of wind descended, tearing the obsidian earth apart. Kail didn't hesitate. He channeled his Blue Flame— the cold, intense fire he had forged from the Frost- Core— into his sword, the blade glowing with a lethal, azure light. He unleashed the [ Dragon Breath Strike ] , a technique of devastating, concentrated thermal pressure. The explosion was blinding, a wall of frost-fire that met the tornado head-on. The force of the detonation was so immense that it threw all three of them backward, slamming them toward the edge of the destruction zone.

They scrambled to their feet, sprinting toward what looked like a stable ridge, but they were not alone.

From the safety of his rock, Hu Lin watched their desperate retreat. A twisted, sadistic grin spread across his face. He channeled his own Earth Realm energy into a palm strike, executing a secret sect technique: The Heaven-Shattering Rupture. He didn't aim for the trees; he aimed for the ground beneath Kail and Guifei.

The earth beneath them collapsed. The force of Hu Lin's attack knocked them off balance, throwing them back into the heart of the swirling debris and the hungry, devouring trees. Hu Lin laughed, the sound cold and cruel, before he turned and vanished into the fog with his team, abandoning them to the catastrophe he had engineered.

They were inches from the safe zone, but the path was gone, buried under a landslide of moving roots and spiraling wind. Kail looked at Guifei, then at the sky, his eyes burning with a desperate, golden resolve.

"Hold on!" Kail screamed.

He grabbed Guifei's hand with his left and Egneel with his right, his muscles bulging as he poured every ounce of his cultivation into his legs and arms. With a roar of defiance, he threw them both upward, launching them with all his remaining strength toward the only clear patch of sky.

As they soared into the air, Egneel and Xu Guifei screamed in unison, their voices raw with terror as they reached back toward the collapsing earth. "Feng Kail! Nooooo!"

In that same heartbeat, the forest converged. A massive, world-shaking explosion of green, pink, and blue energy detonated at the center of the destruction. The shockwave turned the sky to ash, and in the blinding white void that followed, there was nothing but total, silent devastation. Nobody could see anything.
