Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Space Between Lives

Chapter 18: The Space Between Lives

The engine settled into a steady idle as Arty eased the Ute through the warehouse gate, for the first few hundred meters, nobody spoke.

The tyres hummed across cracked asphalt while the industrial estate slipped quietly past.

Leah finally broke the silence. "So..."

Arty glanced across at her. "So… What?"

"You looked like you'd figured something out back there." Leah said.

"Yeah… I think I did." He replied.

Tom shifted in the passenger seat. "Please tell me it isn't another one of your theories."

"It isn't, not this time." Arty said.

That earned a raised eyebrow.

"It's more… like… an observation." Arty continued.

Tom chuckled. "That's somehow less reassuring."

Arty ignored him. "The infected weren't wandering."

Dale looked up from the back seat. "They look like they were wandering."

"What's the difference?" Dale asked.

"They already had somewhere they were going." Silence settled over the cab again.

Leah frowned. "Then why did they come after us?"

"It all comes down to noise and opportunity." He responded.

She looked out through the windscreen. "So they heard the fight, and what, saw movement."

Tom scratched at his beard. "They still wanted to eat us."

"They reacted to an opportunity." Arty said.

He glanced at another lone infected shuffling along the opposite footpath.

"Just watch more closely." He said confidently.

The figure continued forward without looking at the Ute, for a moment. Then...

Its head turned, not by much but enough that it was noticeable.

Tom noticed it first. "...Arty."

"I know… Now you can see it too." He replied.

Another infected emerged between two warehouses, its head turned as well, then multiple heads turned, yet none of them roared, they simply altered course.

It was as though they where casually plotting a course, every one of them choosing the same destination.

Leah looked over both shoulders. "I don't like this… they are following the Ute."

Arty eased off the accelerator. "They're hearing us."

"They're a fair way away, though." Tom stated.

Arty continued thinking, "The sound from the engine carries."

Tom looked into the side mirror. "I think they're multiplying."

"We're just noticing more of them." Leah spoke.

Dale leaned toward the rear window. "Holy... Hells."

The road behind them had begun filling, not with a horde but with every infected they passed, each one quietly joining the growing stream behind the Ute.

Each one quietly changing direction, each one feeding into the next, like tiny creeks flowing into a river.

Arty felt his stomach tighten. "They're converging."

Leah stared at him. "What does that mean?"

"It means..." He replied.

His grip tightened around the steering wheel. "...we're driving the loudest thing in the district."

The cabin fell silent, no one spoke or argued, each of them had reached the same conclusion, the infected weren't hunting, they were gathering.

Arty kept the Ute steady as another side street slipped past, a lone infected shuffled across the intersection ahead without even looking in their direction.

For a heartbeat, he thought they might still be able to outrun this problem, then its head turned, not toward them, toward the sound of the engine.

It changed direction without hesitation as another emerged from between two loading docks.

Neither rushing nor sprinting, merely screaming, moaning, and lurching toward the Ute before quietly joining the growing stream behind it.

They simply adjusted their course, each one joining the growing stream behind the Ute.

Leah twisted in her seat, watching through the rear window. "They're not stopping."

"They won't, they've locked onto us." Arty said quietly.

Tom glanced into the side mirror before looking forward again. "I think we've got enough room…For now… Maybe."

Arty eased around another abandoned car, careful not to overcorrect, the streets were beginning to narrow, parked vehicles lined both sides of the road.

Shipping containers left half unloaded, every obstacle stole another meter of space, every corner hid another infected.

The engine hummed beneath his feet, usually it would have been reassuring, now it sounded like a beacon. Every second they kept driving... Every meter they covered... They were ringing the same dinner bell.

The first infected stepped onto the road, Arty steered around it, as another wandered from a side street, he avoided that one too.

Then a third one came at them, the gaps were shrinking, the Ute bounced over a broken section of road, a metallic bang echoed beneath the chassis.

Tom looked down. "What was that?"

"I don't know." He said.

Another impact, way harder this time, something rolled beneath the wheels before disappearing into the rear.

Leah flinched. "...please tell me that wasn't..."

Arty didn't get a chance to answer, the steering wheel tugged sharply left, he corrected instinctively, a dark shape stumbled directly into their lane.

Tom looked forward, holding his ears. "...that can't be good."

Arty already knew. The steering felt wrong, becoming heavy and loose at the same time... Every correction arrived half a second late.

In the rear mirror... More infected kept joining the flow, he swerved, the left front corner clipped an abandoned sedan, metal screamed.

Bang…

The Ute slammed into the back end of shipping container.

Everything stopped, steam hissed from beneath the crumpled bonnet.

For one impossible heartbeat... Nobody moved.

Arty blinked, his hands were still wrapped around the steering wheel, they were still alive, Arty shoved his shoulder against the driver's door.

It didn't move, he tried again, this time the metal groaned, but it still didn't budge.

"Everyone out!" he shouted.

Leah reached for her handle. "Mine's jammed too!"

Tom slammed both boots into the passenger door. "It's not moving!"

Something struck the rear of the Ute, once, then again, another impact rocked the suspension.

Dale twisted around. "...they're here."

Hands pressed against the rear window causing the glass to creak under the strain.

Crack… Crack… The rear window bowed inward.

The rear window finally gave way.

The infected slammed into him before the moment could resolve...

No leverage.

No angle.

Just weight.

The shattered driver's window.

The wrench.

Leah.

Tom.

Dale.

Four people.

One opening.

The wrench caught uselessly between them as his grip slipped, his balance already gone, the force driving him down faster than he could recover.

More faces pressed against the shattered glass... Patient... Waiting.

Hands closed in all around him, teeth followed, and the world narrowed to a single collapsing point as pain hit and his thoughts vanished just as quickly.

It wasn't clear, not like before, not stable, like whatever it was hadn't fully caught up to him yet. Closer than before, a presence watching, waiting, calculating, and for the briefest instant it acknowledge him.

Impact didn't last. It existed for a fraction of a second, sharp and absolute, the world collapsing into sensation and then nothing, awareness returned without form, no body, no breath, no direction.

Just existence in something complete and featureless, a space that didn't feel empty so much as absolute.

[System…]

The pressure came back.

Stronger.

Structured.

[Reset System Online]

The presence stabilised fully this time, no longer fragmented, no longer catching up. It was here. Clear. Precise.

"I died."

[Host status confirmed: deceased]

No delay. No distortion.

"The first reset wasn't my choice."

[Initial recovery protocol executed during previous termination event]

That tracked, this didn't feel like that, this felt deliberate.

"What happens now?"

The answer settled into him immediately.

[Reset Options Available:]

[1 Day Prior to Outbreak — Minimal Cost.]

[7 Days Prior to Outbreak — Moderate Cost.]

[30 Days Prior to Outbreak — Severe Cost.]

His attention lingered on the third option for half a second before he forced himself away from it.

"Show me the system."

This time, it opened properly.

[Core Progression Model Active]

Level 1 → 2: 100 Core Units

Level 2 → 3: 1,000 Core Units

Level 3 → 4: 10,000 Core Units

Level 4 → 5: 100,000 Core Units

Level 5 → 6: 1,000,000 Core Units

Level 6 → 7: 10,000,000 Core Units

Level 7 → 8: 100,000,000 Core Units

Level 8 → 9: 1,000,000,000 Core Units

Level 9 → 10: 10,000,000,000 Core Units

[Total Required (Level 10 Equivalent): 11,111,111,100 Units]

"That's the full cost of levelling up." Arty said quietly.

[Confirmed]

"What about that one billion I saw before?"

[Level 1 anchor value displayed during initial activation]

So that had been a fragment, he exhaled slowly.

"Show current debt."

[Debt System Active]

[Total Debt: 11,111,111,100 Units]

[Current Reduction: 4 Units]

[Remaining: 11,111,111,096 Units]

The number settled in properly this time it was heavy and unavoidable.

"What carries over?"

[Persistent Gains Retained]

[Material Manipulation — Level 1 Metal Affinity]

He held onto that, so not all progress was lost.

"What are my upgrade options?"

[Spending Pathways Available]

Path 1: Self Enhancement

Physical attributes, durability, speed, cognition, and survivability.

Path 2: Ability Development

Elemental and material affinities. Existing alignment: Metal (Level 1). Expansion possible.

Path 3: System Expansion

Unlocks additional functions, tracking, optimisation, storage, mission complexity, and advanced integration.

Arty narrowed his focus slightly.

"System expansion… Does what exactly?"

[System capability increases proportionally with investment.

Higher levels unlock enhanced mission generation,

predictive modelling, resource optimisation, and auxiliary functions.]

"So the system, can grow, with me… So the question is really, what do I spend them on first?"

[Core conversion required. All currency derived from crystal cores.]

"Three paths. One resource."

[Confirmed]

That wasn't a choice, that was a constraint.

"What about missions?"

There was no delay.

[Mission System Active]

Pre-Outbreak Resets:

Missions will be issued to guide preparation, resource acquisition, and strategic positioning.

Dynamic Conditions:

Missions will be generated when the system identifies opportunities for growth, survival optimisation, or progression acceleration.

"What determines the missions?"

[Opportunity, proximity, risk, and projected return.]

That sounded simple, yet it wasn't, his thoughts shifted again, connecting pieces faster now.

"You're not just reacting," he said. "You're planning."

The system didn't confirm, nor did it deny, he let that thought sit.

Then… "What about other people?"

[External interactions may influence outcome variables.]

"That's conveniently vague."

[Clarification: preserving, assisting, or altering the survival of specific individuals may yield benefits beyond direct debt reduction.]

That caught his attention.

"Such as?"

[Not all rewards are quantifiable at current system level.]

"So… Saving people, could matter, not just morally also mechanically."

His focus shifted back to the reset options.

One day.

Seven days.

Thirty days.

"Costs."

1 Day Reset — +10% → 12,222,222,210 Units

7 Day Reset — +25% → 13,888,888,875 Units

30 Day Reset — +50% → 16,666,666,650 Units

That shut the thought down immediately, thirty days wasn't strategy, It was risk with a massive cost attached to it, he didn't know or understand enough yet.

Stacking that kind of penalty now… felt like suicide… Even seven days felt like a gamble.

One day… felt like it was more manageable.

"This isn't about getting ahead," he said quietly. "It's about not making it worse."

The system remained silent.

The decision settled.

"One day."

[Selection confirmed. Minimal penalty applied.]

The void shifted instantly, something opening beneath him, pulling him back with direction instead of dropping him into nothing, a sharp sense of falling hit him.

[Cycle continuation recommended]

That line stayed with him, not advice, a pattern, he would need more than one attempt, more than two, then a pulling sensation intensified, a flicker, a wave, dark and heavy, then suddenly gone.

The void collapsed and the world rushed back.

Arty dragged in a breath.
