Chapter 99 - The First Morning He Wanted

Inside Xu Chen's bedroom.

The room grew quieter after that.

Not awkward.

Not uncertain.

Simply full.

Xu Chen stood close enough to feel the warmth of Aum's hand intertwined with his while the bedside lamp cast soft gold across the room, leaving the rest of the villa wrapped in mountain-dark silence.

Outside, Dali had finally begun sleeping.

Inside, neither of them seemed willing to move very far from the other.

Aum watched him carefully.

"You became quiet again."

Xu Chen smiled faintly.

"I'm thinking."

"That continues happening frequently tonight."

"That's because you keep saying life-altering things with absolutely no warning beforehand."

Aum tilted his head slightly.

"The statement regarding morning."

"Yes, that statement regarding morning."

Warmth moved visibly through Aum's expression again.

Xu Chen's pulse reacted instantly.

At this point it was humiliating how automatic that had become.

Xu Chen stepped closer until their foreheads touched lightly once more.

"You know what the worst part is?"

Aum looked at him immediately.

"What."

"I understood exactly what you meant."

The silence afterward deepened softly around them.

Aum's thumb brushed slowly against the inside of Xu Chen's wrist.

"You understood because you feel similarly."

Not a question.

Xu Chen laughed quietly under his breath.

"Yeah."

There was no point avoiding honesty anymore.

Not with him.

Xu Chen looked toward the window briefly. The curtains shifted softly in the night wind, moonlight faint beneath the warmer glow of the bedside lamp.

For years, nights inside this room had followed the same structure:

work until exhaustion,

silence,

sleep,

repeat.

Functional.

Orderly.

Emotionally empty.

And now—

Aum stood barefoot in the middle of his bedroom looking at him like tomorrow mattered because Xu Chen existed inside it.

The realization settled painfully deep.

Xu Chen exhaled slowly.

"You really changed everything very fast."

Aum considered that carefully.

"I believe the process was mutual."

God.

Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.

"You are impossible to survive."

"That statement appears affectionate now."

"It absolutely is."

Aum's expression softened immediately afterward.

Xu Chen noticed something then that made warmth spread quietly through his chest:

Aum had stopped looking uncertain whenever Xu Chen admitted affection.

Earlier tonight he reacted with visible surprise each time Xu Chen chose him openly.

Now—

now he looked calmer.

Not because the feelings mattered less.

Because he was beginning to believe them.

The realization nearly undid Xu Chen emotionally all over again.

He touched Aum's face gently.

"You trust me now."

Aum blinked once slowly.

"Yes."

The immediate certainty in the answer hurt.

Not painfully.

Too tenderly.

Xu Chen's thumb brushed lightly beneath his jaw.

"That's a really big thing for you, isn't it."

Aum became quiet briefly.

Then answered honestly.

"On Brihyansh, trust is usually developed through years of structural compatibility assessment."

Xu Chen listened carefully.

Aum's gaze remained fixed on him.

"With you, it occurred before verification." A faint pause. "That was unfamiliar."

Xu Chen's chest tightened immediately.

"But you still did it."

"Yes."

"Why."

Aum looked at him with devastating steadiness.

"Because every instinct I possess became quieter near you instead of louder."

Silence.

Xu Chen stopped breathing properly again.

God.

That sentence.

Aum continued softly:

"When I first arrived on Earth, everything felt unpredictable." His fingers tightened slightly around Xu Chen's hand. "But your presence consistently reduced fear responses instead of increasing them."

Xu Chen's throat tightened painfully.

Because beneath all the emotional intimacy tonight, beneath all the kisses and warmth and longing—

this was what mattered most.

Aum felt safe with him.

Not dependent.

Safe.

Xu Chen leaned forward and kissed him slowly.

Aum responded instantly now, familiar warmth unfolding quietly between them while exhaustion softened both of them further.

The kiss did not deepen urgently this time.

It lingered.

Careful.

Sleepy.

Tender enough to ache.

When they finally separated slightly, Xu Chen rested his forehead against Aum's shoulder with a quiet exhale.

Aum's hand moved slowly through his hair again.

The gesture was becoming dangerous in entirely new ways now.

Xu Chen could genuinely fall asleep standing here if Aum kept doing that.

"You know," he murmured softly, voice roughened by exhaustion now, "I think my body already decided you belong here."

Aum's fingers paused briefly in his hair.

Then resumed.

"I believe mine reached the same conclusion."

Xu Chen smiled helplessly against his shoulder.

"See? That." He lifted his head slightly. "You keep saying things like that."

"You continue responding positively."

"That's because you sound sincere every single time."

Aum became still briefly.

Then very quietly:

"I am sincere every single time."

Xu Chen's chest physically hurt.

No one had ever loved him dishonestly before because no one had ever reached this place with him at all.

And somehow the first person who did came from another world entirely.

The absurdity of it should have felt overwhelming.

Instead it felt inevitable now.

Aum touched his face softly once more.

"You are drifting toward sleep."

Xu Chen laughed quietly.

"Yeah. I think emotional collapse is exhausting."

"That appears biologically reasonable."

Xu Chen kissed him once more before stepping back slightly.

Only slightly.

Because apparently even half a meter of distance now felt incorrect.

Aum noticed immediately.

"You dislike separation now."

Xu Chen pointed weakly toward him.

"See? That observational thing should not sound this intimate."

A faint softness touched Aum's mouth again.

Xu Chen's heartbeat reacted immediately.

Hopeless.

Absolutely hopeless.

Then Aum glanced briefly toward the bed before looking back at him.

The atmosphere shifted quietly once more.

Not heavy.

Just aware.

Xu Chen followed his gaze.

And suddenly the reality of sharing this room overnight settled fully into both of them at the same time.

Aum looked back at him carefully.

Xu Chen's pulse immediately destabilized again.

Aum noticed.

Of course he did.

"You changed breathing pattern."

Xu Chen covered his eyes briefly with one hand.

"I'm never escaping that phrase again, am I?"
