Chapter 87 - The Room That Remembered Him

Inside Xu Chen's villa after their conversation in the hallway.

The silence after that sentence felt almost unbearably soft.

"You make me forget I was ever good at being alone."

Aum became completely still against him.

Xu Chen could feel the exact moment the words settled somewhere deep inside him, not processed analytically this time, not observed and categorized, but felt.

That difference mattered now.

The villa remained quiet around them, warm hallway lights casting long shadows across the floor while distant festival sounds drifted faintly upward from the city below the mountain.

Aum's hand stayed against Xu Chen's waist.

Not moving.

Holding.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that neither of them had cared about physical distance for a long time now.

Aum looked at him with devastating focus.

"You were alone frequently before me."

Not a question.

Xu Chen smiled faintly, though something quieter existed underneath it.

"Yes."

"You disliked it."

Xu Chen considered the question honestly.

Then shook his head slightly.

"No." His gaze lingered on Aum's face. "That's the problem."

Aum's attention sharpened further.

"I do not understand."

Xu Chen laughed softly.

"Of course you don't."

The warmth of Aum's body remained close enough that coherent thought continued failing intermittently.

Xu Chen looked away briefly toward the darkened living room beyond the hallway.

"I was fine before you," he admitted quietly. "The villa was quiet. Predictable. My routines made sense." A pause. "And now every room here remembers you."

The atmosphere changed instantly again.

Aum's fingers tightened slightly against his waist.

Xu Chen felt it immediately.

Everything with him had become physical now.

Aum's voice lowered.

"The environment changed through prolonged coexistence."

Xu Chen closed his eyes briefly.

"You really can make anything sound scientific, huh."

"I am attempting accuracy."

"You are accidentally making this worse."

Aum looked genuinely concerned for one second.

"Worse negatively?"

Xu Chen laughed quietly again, warmth spreading painfully through his chest.

"No."

A pause.

Then softer:

"Worse because I like hearing you think about me that way."

The honesty settled between them slowly.

Aum's gaze shifted subtly afterward.

Xu Chen recognized the expression now.

Emotional overload.

Aum stepped closer instinctively.

Xu Chen's back remained lightly against the hallway wall, Aum standing between him and the open space of the villa now close enough that warmth existed everywhere.

Not threatening.

Protective somehow.

Xu Chen's pulse reacted immediately to the realization.

Aum noticed.

"What exactly are you doing?"

Xu Chen sighed quietly.

"At this point I think my heart rate around you has permanently lost structural integrity."

Aum stared at him.

Then, with complete sincerity:

"I do not dislike that outcome."

Xu Chen actually laughed against his shoulder this time, briefly losing the ability to survive him properly.

The sound softened something visibly inside Aum again.

Xu Chen noticed immediately.

That had also become dangerous.

"You really like when I laugh, huh."

"Yes."

No hesitation.

None.

Xu Chen lifted his head slowly.

Aum was still looking at him with impossible openness, and Xu Chen realized suddenly that this version of Aum, the emotionally unguarded one, might genuinely become impossible to resist long-term.

Not because he was beautiful. Though he was.

Not because Xu Chen desired him. Though he did.

Because Aum felt honest in a way the world rarely allowed people to be.

Xu Chen touched his face gently again before thinking properly.

Aum leaned into the contact immediately.

The instinctive response hit Xu Chen straight through the chest.

"Oh, that's dangerous," he murmured softly.

Aum blinked once. "Clarify."

"You trust me too much already."

Aum's expression changed subtly.

Not uncertainty.

Certainty.

"I trusted you the night you carried me into this house."

Xu Chen stopped breathing for one suspended second.

The memory hit instantly.

Cold mountain fog.

Blood against pale skin.

The impossible weight of responsibility settling into his arms before logic could interfere.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that everything since then had unfolded from that single decision.

Aum watched the realization happen across his face.

"You remember it frequently."

Xu Chen exhaled slowly.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Xu Chen laughed quietly under his breath.

"You really ask impossible questions at the worst moments."

"I require the answer."

Xu Chen looked at him for several long seconds before answering honestly.

"Because I think some part of me knew my life was changing the moment I touched you."

Silence.

Aum's eyes softened immediately afterward in a way Xu Chen had never seen before tonight.

Not curiosity.

Not fascination.

Affection.

Openly.

Xu Chen felt something inside his chest ache from it.

Aum's fingers slid slowly upward from Xu Chen's waist along his side before stopping carefully against his ribs.

The touch was light.

Xu Chen still inhaled sharply.

Aum noticed instantly.

"You remain highly responsive."

Xu Chen closed his eyes.

"You are absolutely not allowed to sound pleased while saying that."

"I am pleased."

Xu Chen laughed weakly again.

The honesty in him was catastrophic.

Aum kissed him before Xu Chen could recover properly.

Slow at first. Warm. Then deeper the moment Xu Chen responded immediately against his mouth.

The villa around them disappeared quietly.

Xu Chen's hands slid upward into Aum's hair again while Aum's body moved instinctively closer until there was barely space left between them at all.

The kiss felt different here.

Inside the villa.

Inside the place that had held all their earlier silences and longing and absence.

Xu Chen realized suddenly that this house had witnessed the beginning of everything between them long before either of them understood what was happening.

The thought nearly overwhelmed him.

Aum's hand spread slowly against the middle of his back now, holding him closer with growing unconscious possessiveness.

Xu Chen made another soft sound against his mouth.

Aum reacted instantly.

Closer.

Again.

The response was becoming automatic now.

Xu Chen's knees nearly gave out from it.

Aum pulled back only enough to breathe afterward, forehead resting lightly against Xu Chen's while both of them stood trapped somewhere between restraint and losing it entirely.

"You become unstable when I touch your back," Aum whispered softly.

Xu Chen stared at him in exhausted disbelief.

"You are genuinely unbelievable."

"I am observant."

"You are kissing me against a hallway wall while conducting scientific commentary."

Aum considered that seriously.

Then very quietly:

"Both activities currently feel important."

Xu Chen actually laughed hard enough this time that his forehead dropped briefly against Aum's shoulder.

The warmth of the moment settled around them instantly afterward.

Not just desire now.

Comfort too.

Dangerous comfort.

Aum's hand moved slowly once through Xu Chen's hair while silence deepened around them again.

The intimacy of the gesture affected Xu Chen unexpectedly hard.

Because no one had ever touched him like this before.

Not impatiently.

Not performatively.

Not with expectation.

Just carefully.

Like staying close already mattered naturally.

Xu Chen lifted his head slowly afterward.

The villa lights cast soft gold across Aum's face while the mountain night remained dark beyond the windows farther inside the house.

Neither of them had moved away.

Neither seemed capable of it.

Then Aum looked toward the hallway leading deeper into the villa and asked quietly:

"Am I staying in the guest room tonight?"

Xu Chen's entire nervous system stopped functioning properly.
