Chapter 21 - "Shattered Bonds"(21)

Episode 21: Shattered Bonds

Rhino Valley – Collapsing Safehouse District

Kevin Leister's world had narrowed to white-blue fury and the taste of blood in his mouth.

The Supernatural Rampager mantle burned across his skin like molten circuitry, every pulse sending destructive waves through the already ruined streets. Kim Al Anzi stood opposite him, breathing hard, her sand golems crumbling into dust around her. The colossal serpent she had summoned lay in pieces, half-buried under fallen buildings.

"You don't understand anything!" Kim screamed, her voice cracking with grief and rage. She thrust both hands forward. The desert mirage around her flared—razor-sharp sand blades whipped through the air like a storm of glass.

Kevin roared and charged. Each step cratered the asphalt. He smashed through the barrage, white-blue energy exploding from his fists in devastating pulses. One punch connected with Kim's midsection, launching her through three storefronts in a trail of debris.

But she didn't stay down. Rising from the rubble, eyes glowing with golden sand-light, Kim formed a massive fist of compacted earth and hurled it at him. "My mother died fighting monsters like you! I won't let her sacrifice be for nothing!"

Kevin caught the fist with both hands. The impact rattled his bones, but the Rampager only grew stronger. "Then stop becoming one!" he shouted back, voice layered with otherworldly distortion. With a savage twist, he shattered the construct and closed the distance again.

Nearby, Peter Shotstock was on his knees beside Sasha, hands slick with blood as he pressed makeshift bandages against her wounds. Lil Micah barked frantically, circling them protectively. Devonte fumbled with the first aid kit, hands shaking.

"Stay with me, kid," Peter growled. "I've seen worse in worse places. You're not dying on my watch."

A sudden explosion rocked the far end of the street. Wyatt Freeman came flying out of an alley, skidding across the pavement. Headless Dullahan followed, demonic horse breathing gouts of hellfire, flaming head held high like a grotesque lantern.

"Wyatt!" Kevin yelled, momentarily distracted.

That split-second cost him. Kim's sand serpent reformed, slamming into his side and pinning him against a half-collapsed wall. Concrete dust choked the air.

Willowbrook High School Ruins

Bangu woke to chains and darkness.

His head throbbed. The insane physicality that usually made him unstoppable felt muted, suppressed by some kind of Glimmerfall dampener collar clamped around his neck. He was in the back of a reinforced transport truck, wrists bound in glowing restraints.

Beside him, Laker and Layla were slumped unconscious, time-manipulation powers clearly nullified. Jackson the Soul Eater sat across from them, eyes half-lidded, tendrils of stolen essence weakly probing the air.

"Welcome back, meat," a Glimmerfall soldier sneered from the front. "R. Dogder has plans for all of you."

Bangu strained against the chains, muscles bulging. The collar shocked him with searing pain, but he didn't stop. "When I get out of these… I'm going to break every single one of you."

Jungle – Sea of Japan Region

Nathan Moya's illusions flickered wildly as Laughter's manic giggles echoed through the burning wreckage.

"Stop laughing!" Nathan snarled, layering nightmare after nightmare around the psychotic general. But Laughter danced through them, his infectious hysteria turning the illusions against their creators. Tiago clutched his head, overwhelmed by violent echoes of past timelines. Derek's electric strikes went wide as hallucinations made him see enemies everywhere.

Ferrum Ironfist——formed a massive iron dome for cover. "We need to end this clown now!"

Laughter landed on top of the dome, kicking his legs like a child. "Clown? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day! Hee-hee-hee—let's see how you laugh when I rip your minds apart!"

A fresh wave of hypnotic laughter slammed into them. Nathan pushed back with everything he had, creating a mirror of pure terror—an illusion of the Garden Behind the Fence itself, its unspeakable guardian looming in the shadows. For the first time, Laughter's grin faltered.

Rhino Valley

Kevin exploded out of the sand serpent's grip in a cataclysmic burst of Rampager energy. The shockwave flattened everything in a fifty-meter radius. Kim was thrown backward, coughing blood, her desert mirage cracking.

He landed hard, circuits dimming slightly as exhaustion clawed at him. The mantle was powerful, but it fed on his fear and rage—and right now both were running dangerously high.

"Wyatt, you good?" Kevin called out.

Wyatt rolled to his feet, taser sparking in his hand. "Define good. This headless asshole doesn't quit!"

Dullahan cracked his whip again, opening another spatial rift. The demonic horse charged.

Before Kevin could intervene, a new presence materialized at the edge of the battlefield—tall, cloaked in shifting shadows, with eyes that glowed like fractured Glimmer Shards.

R. Dogder himself had finally stepped onto the frontlines.

"Enough games," Dogder's voice boomed, calm and commanding. "The White-Blue Heart Pillar calls. And you, Kevin Leister… your Rampager is the key. Surrender the boy, and your friends might live to see another dawn."

Kevin's blood ran cold. The Rampager inside him howled in defiance, circuits flaring brighter than ever.

In the distance, the transport trucks carrying Bangu and the others sped away under heavy escort. Peter looked up from Sasha, face grim. "Kevin… they've got the kids."

The war had just escalated.
