Chapter 21 - THE SOUND OF LAUGHTER

The old classroom door creaked open with a long, hollow sound that echoed through the empty corridor. For a brief moment, no one moved. Even Noah, who usually had a joke ready for every situation, stood unusually still. The decorations hanging from the ceiling swayed gently as the cold breeze drifted through the East Wing, making the entire hallway feel strangely alive.

Olivia was the first to break the silence.

"Okay... tell me someone else saw that."

"I definitely did," Noah replied, taking a cautious step backward. "And for the record, I vote that we leave."

Ethan slowly walked toward the open classroom. The hinges continued to groan softly as the door moved with the wind. He looked inside.

Rows of dusty desks stood exactly where they had been left years ago. Cobwebs covered the corners of the room, and faded sunlight slipped through cracked windows, painting long shadows across the wooden floor.

There was no one inside.

"It was probably the wind," Elena said, though even she didn't sound completely convinced.

Noah immediately agreed.

"Exactly. Wind. Very scary wind. Now let's go back to the part of the school where people actually exist."

Ethan looked once more around the classroom before quietly closing the door.

Maybe Noah was right.

Maybe his mind had begun connecting ordinary things to the strange clues he'd found over the past few days.

Still...

The words carved into the door refused to leave his thoughts.

He Never Left.

The four friends finished decorating the hallway before returning to the main building. The atmosphere changed almost instantly. Music from the auditorium echoed through the corridors, students laughed while carrying festival decorations, and the smell of fresh popcorn floated from the Home Economics Club, who were already testing recipes for the Autumn Festival.

It felt like stepping into another world.

Olivia stretched her arms dramatically.

"I officially prefer noisy hallways."

"I'm with you," Noah said.

Elena smiled.

"I think the East Wing is just old."

"Old is fine," Noah replied.

"Haunted is where I draw the line."

Everyone laughed.

Even Ethan.

The next class was free because one of the teachers had called in sick. Within minutes, the classroom transformed into complete chaos.

Some students played cards.

Others listened to music.

A group near the windows argued loudly about football.

Mrs. Anderson hadn't arrived yet, so everyone treated the period like an extra break.

Noah climbed onto his chair.

"Attention, everyone!"

A paper ball immediately hit him in the shoulder.

"Sit down!"

He ignored it.

"I have an important announcement."

Another paper ball struck him.

This time the class burst into laughter.

Olivia shook her head.

"You never learn."

"No."

"And that's the problem."

"It builds character."

"It builds headaches."

Even Ethan found himself laughing harder than he had in years.

Elena noticed.

His laughter was different now.

Freer.

Lighter.

For the first time, he didn't look like someone carrying the weight of invisible memories.

She smiled to herself.

Maybe he's finally starting to feel at home.

"Since nobody is studying," Noah declared, "I have a better idea."

Ethan looked suspicious.

"Whenever you say that, something goes wrong."

"We're playing a game."

"What game?"

"Truth or Dare."

Half the class immediately gathered around.

"Oh, this should be interesting."

Olivia folded her arms.

"I'm already regretting this."

Noah spun an empty water bottle.

It stopped in front of Mason.

"Truth or Dare?"

"Dare."

"I dare you to sing."

"What?"

"Right now."

Within seconds, Mason dramatically began singing an old love song completely off-key.

The classroom exploded with laughter.

Even Mrs. Anderson, who had just entered the room unnoticed, paused outside the door with an amused smile before stepping inside.

"I suppose today's music lesson is going well."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Mason slowly sat down.

The class tried desperately not to laugh.

Mrs. Anderson smiled.

"I'll pretend I didn't see that."

Relief spread across the room.

After school, Ethan and Elena stayed behind in the library to finish another part of their literature project.

Unlike the first time, the silence between them felt natural.

Comfortable.

Elena looked up from her notebook.

"Can I ask you something?"

Ethan nodded.

"Do you miss your old school?"

He thought for a moment.

"Not really."

"Your friends?"

"I didn't have many."

She looked surprised.

"Seriously?"

"I kept to myself."

She smiled softly.

"I can't imagine that anymore."

"Why?"

"Because now..."

She hesitated.

"...you smile more."

Ethan looked at her quietly.

"Maybe that's because..."

He stopped.

She waited.

"Because what?"

He smiled faintly.

"I finally met people worth smiling around."

For a second...

Neither of them spoke.

Elena lowered her eyes, trying to hide the warmth rising to her cheeks.

She wasn't sure why those words affected her so much.

Maybe because they sounded honest.

Maybe because she felt exactly the same.

Before either of them could say anything else, the old librarian walked toward their table carrying a worn leather-bound book.

Without a word, he placed it gently in front of Ethan.

"I believe..."

he said quietly,

"...this belongs to your family."

Ethan frowned.

"My family?"

The librarian nodded once.

"It's time you knew why the school remembers the name Carter."

The old man turned and walked away before Ethan could ask another question.

Ethan slowly looked down at the faded leather cover.

Embossed in gold, barely visible beneath years of dust, were two words.

Carter Journal.
