Chapter 11 - THE GIRL FROM YESTERDAY

The morning arrived with a pale golden light spilling through the curtains, but it brought him no peace.

He had barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, the same strange feeling returned—an unfamiliar name, an old school building, and a smile that refused to reach his eyes.

He sat on the edge of his bed, rubbing his tired eyes before glancing at the admission file lying on the study table.

"Why does this place feel so familiar?" he whispered.

No answer came.

Only silence.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

"You're still not ready?" his mother called from outside. "It's your first day. You'll be late."

"I'm coming."

He quickly got dressed, picked up his bag, and walked downstairs.

His younger brother was already finishing breakfast.

"Try not to get into trouble on your first day," he teased with a grin.

"And you try not to finish all the food before I sit down."

His mother smiled, happy to see him talking normally again.

For a moment...

Everything felt ordinary.

But deep inside, he knew something was waiting for him.

Something he couldn't explain.

The school stood exactly as it had yesterday.

Old walls.

Tall windows.

A playground buzzing with students laughing, running, and calling each other's names.

He stood outside the main gate for a second.

His heart beat faster.

Not because it was a new school.

Because it somehow didn't feel new at all.

He slowly stepped inside.

Groups of friends walked past him.

Some were laughing.

Some were arguing over homework.

Others were already planning what to do after school.

He felt like an outsider watching everyone else's story.

A senior accidentally bumped into his shoulder.

"Sorry, bro."

"It's okay."

He continued walking toward the academic block.

The corridors were crowded.

Teachers carried attendance registers.

Students hurried to their classrooms before the bell.

Everything was noisy.

Yet...

The strange silence inside him refused to disappear.

Class XI-B.

He stopped outside the classroom door.

His fingers tightened around the strap of his bag.

"Relax... It's just another classroom."

Taking a deep breath, he knocked.

"May I come in, sir?"

The teacher looked up from the attendance register.

"Come in."

The entire class turned to look at him.

He hated moments like these.

The teacher smiled politely.

"So, everyone, we have a new student joining us today."

A few students whispered among themselves.

Someone from the back muttered, "Another topper?"

Another replied, "Or another sleepyhead."

A wave of laughter spread across the room.

The teacher raised an eyebrow.

"Silence."

Then he looked back at him.

"Introduce yourself."

He swallowed nervously.

"My name is..." he introduced himself in a calm voice. "I recently shifted here with my family. I hope we'll get along."

"Very good," the teacher nodded. "You may take the empty seat near the third row."

He nodded and began walking toward it.

Just then—

The classroom door opened again.

"I'm... I'm sorry, sir."

A soft voice echoed across the room.

Everyone turned.

Including him.

His footsteps froze.

Standing at the door...

was the same girl.

The girl from yesterday.

The one he had accidentally bumped into on the road.

She looked equally surprised.

For a second...

Neither of them moved.

Her eyes widened in disbelief.

"Him?"

His heartbeat skipped.

"Her?"

The teacher sighed dramatically.

"Late on the second day after holidays?"

"I'm really sorry, sir. The bus—"

"I've heard enough. Go and sit."

She nodded quietly.

As she walked toward her seat, she passed beside him.

For the briefest moment...

Their eyes met.

Neither smiled.

Neither spoke.

But both remembered yesterday perfectly.

She lowered her gaze almost immediately and walked to her desk.

The teacher cleared his throat.

"You too, young man. Your seat."

He quickly looked away and sat down.

Coincidentally...

Her seat was directly in front of his.

He blinked.

"Seriously?"

The first lecture began.

Mathematics.

Numbers covered the board.

Equations.

Formulas.

But his attention kept drifting.

Every few minutes, he looked toward the window.

Sometimes...

His eyes accidentally landed on the girl sitting ahead.

She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear while trying to solve a question.

She looked focused.

Calm.

Different from yesterday.

Almost as if the road incident had never happened.

He immediately looked away before she noticed.

Unfortunately...

She had.

She smiled very slightly.

He looked down at his notebook, pretending to write something.

"Great... Now she probably thinks I'm staring at her."

The bell finally rang.

The class burst into conversations.

Some students rushed outside.

Others gathered around the new student.

"Hey!"

"I'm Arjun."

"I'm Kabir."

"Which school were you in before?"

"Do you play football?"

Within minutes, three boys surrounded him.

He answered politely.

They seemed friendly.

One of them pointed toward the front bench.

"You know her?"

He followed the direction.

The same girl.

She was talking to another girl while arranging her books.

He quickly shook his head.

"No..."

Before he could complete the sentence...

She turned around.

Their eyes met again.

This time...

She walked toward him.

Each step made his heartbeat faster.

The boys exchanged teasing looks.

"Oho..."

"Looks like someone knows someone."

She stopped a few feet away.

For a second...

Neither knew what to say.

Finally...

She spoke.

"So..."

He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.

"So..."

An uncomfortable silence followed.

Then both spoke at the same time.

"You first."

"No... you."

Both stopped.

Both laughed softly.

The awkwardness suddenly felt lighter.

"I just wanted to say..." she said gently, "...about yesterday."

"I'm sorry."

He blinked.

"You don't have to apologize. It was my fault too."

"No..."

She smiled.

"We both weren't looking."

He nodded.

"I guess."

Another silence.

Not uncomfortable this time.

Just... shy.

"I'm glad you didn't get hurt," she said.

"You too."

She looked at him for another second before smiling politely.

"See you around."

"You too."

She walked back toward her friends.

One of the boys beside him elbowed his shoulder.

"Bro..."

He looked at him.

"You said you don't know her."

"I don't."

"Really?"

He smiled awkwardly.

"We just... met yesterday."

The boys burst into laughter.

"Yesterday, huh?"

Someone whistled dramatically.

He rolled his eyes.

"It's not what you're thinking."

"Sure."

The lunch bell echoed through the corridor.

Students hurried toward the canteen.

He picked up his lunchbox and quietly walked outside.

The campus looked beautiful under the afternoon sun.

For the first time that day...

He felt slightly relaxed.

He sat alone on a bench.

Just as he opened his lunchbox...

A shadow fell across him.

He looked up.

It was her.

She hesitated before speaking.

"Is... this seat taken?"

He looked at the empty bench beside him.

Then back at her.

"No."

She smiled.

"Good."

And for reasons neither of them understood...

It felt like this wasn't the beginning of their story.

It felt...

Like they were continuing one they had somehow forgotten.

To Be Continued...
