Chapter 144 - Chapter 148: Scandalous Talk

Agnes Tachyon strongly suspected that this girl named Diminuendo was a lobbyist for the Royal Racing Association—someone deliberately leaking information that only insiders should know, all to tempt Xingyun Liuge with fame and status and persuade this once-in-a-generation super horse girl to transfer to Britain.

It was a very reasonable conclusion. After all, Japan had always dreamed of shedding Asia and joining Europe. For a Japanese horse girl to have similar aspirations was only natural, wasn't it?

The only thing worth noting was that this was definitely not the only chance Xingyun Liuge would ever get. She was already an American Triple Crown winner. The great American racing families were surely staring at her with shining eyes, probably even sitting down together right now to discuss, in the utmost seriousness, what benefits they ought to offer her.

The moment Agnes Tachyon thought about how the JRA had clung stubbornly to its old registration system and, because of that, had lost a future queen of the turf—only to get itself practically dismantled by Rudolf Symbol working together with the great racing families—she could not help wanting to spit at that institution that had already been all but nailed to the pillar of shame.

Since beginning her overseas campaign, Xingyun Liuge had not once mentioned Japan. Even foreign fans had started to notice something was wrong. The entire JRA really ought to commit ritual suicide before the Japanese public.

Ideally, they should beg Xingyun Liuge to personally—

Well, no, perhaps not. That was too cruel. An innocent, pure-hearted horse girl should not have to do something like that.

Rudolf Symbol could act as their second instead. Agnes Tachyon, at least, felt that way. Rudolf was already carrying an enormous burden as it was; taking on a bit more would hardly matter. The capable should work harder.

With that thought, Agnes Tachyon promptly slipped her hand free from her baggy sleeve, wriggled out of Xingyun Liuge's grip, then spun around and flung her arms around Liuge's neck, resting her chin right on the girl's shoulder in an openly intimate pose.

Tachyon observed clearly that Xingyun Liuge's ears did not so much as twitch. They remained standing there, lively and upright, only flicking faintly now and then. Which meant Liuge was not the least bit repulsed by what she was doing.

So Agnes Tachyon grew even bolder.

In a soft, syrupy voice, she asked, "Xingyun, is this one of your little admirers in Britain? As expected of our Xingyun—so popular in Japan, in America, and now in Britain too."

Anyone listening might easily have thought the two of them had already established some kind of relationship that was best left unspoken.

That tone was not merely sweet—it was too sweet. Just hearing it made one's scalp tingle, as though the conversation might at any moment veer straight into horseplay.

Xingyun Liuge glanced at Agnes Tachyon in exaggerated surprise, then mercilessly shot back, "Sorry, I'm not interested in flat chests."

It did not seem to occur to her at all that this one line had cleanly pierced both girls right through the middle of the forehead.

Diminuendo and Agnes Tachyon alike froze.

Diminuendo instinctively looked down at Xingyun Liuge's chest, then hurriedly folded her arms over her own, as though shielding herself from further "damage." She very much wanted to retort: you could not judge a horse girl's worth by her figure.

But Xingyun Liuge was already a Triple Crown winner, while she herself was merely the third-place finisher in the Guineas, with no other especially dazzling G1 record to speak of. Even if she won this Oaks, she would still have no grounds to rebut Liuge. After all, it was Liuge's personal taste—was she supposed to answer with something pathetic like, "Small can be cute too"?

In the end, Diminuendo could only retreat in defeat. She had already fulfilled her duty of passing on the message. The rest could be left to those people in the Royal Racing Association.

Granted, Xingyun Liuge seemed to have a rather good relationship with Shardari, but Shardari was flat-chested too, so she was hardly of any use in this situation.

Meanwhile, after watching Diminuendo's retreating back, Xingyun Liuge reached over and rubbed Agnes Tachyon's head. Then she caught her by the back of the collar again, peeled her off, and casually tossed her lab coat over her head.

Agnes Tachyon did not even bother pulling the coat down. She simply shook her head, letting it fall onto the grass, then sat cross-legged without a care in the world, slender arms wrapped around her ankles, and delivered a line so shameless it bordered on obscene:

"Not interested in flat girls? So that means you like someone with a figure like Daiwa's, huh? I see... so you like them big. In other words, if it were Daiwa, then it'd be fine?"

As she spoke, she gave Xingyun Liuge a smile so strange it could only be described as deeply suspicious.

Honestly, it was beyond rude for Agnes Tachyon to say something like that about Daiwa Scarlet, given that she was supposed to be her senior. But then again, a senior who had to be fussed over and taken care of by her junior because her ability to manage her own life was catastrophically bad had already crossed far beyond ordinary rudeness. Compared to that, maybe joking around like this was not any worse.

Still, there was a serious look in Agnes Tachyon's eyes. It did not seem like she was joking at all.

Xingyun Liuge did not answer. Instead, she pointed at Agnes Tachyon's lab coat and said, "It's not exactly great to leave that lying on the ground. It'll be a pain to wash."

At that, Agnes Tachyon proudly lifted her chin. Her ears and tail swayed lightly, utterly relaxed.

"It's fine. Daiwa will take care of it. Under my guidance, she'll definitely become an excellent wife!"

The tone, the expression—it was so absurdly smug that it felt like she was proudly advertising some treasured bloodline in her stable.

"I can tell you'll both become incredible horse girls one day," Xingyun Liuge said. Then she paused deliberately, planted both hands on her hips, and lifted her chin in proud defiance. "But before that... you say the future belongs to you? Then prove it to me."

Xingyun Liuge had no interest in discussing horseplay. Yes, she did prefer girls with fuller figures, but why on earth should she talk to someone else about something like that? Not even if that someone was Daiwa Scarlet's senior.

She made her stance perfectly clear: wanted to know? Then race her first. Win, and only then come back and ask.

But could Agnes Tachyon actually beat Xingyun Liuge?

Tachyon had tremendous confidence in her own speed, certainly—but she had never once thought of Liuge as an opponent. In her mind, the two of them ought to walk side by side, hand in hand, ushering in a new era together.

Naturally, a major reason for that was that she knew she could not win.

If she truly had confidence in defeating Liuge, Agnes Tachyon would have turned Liuge into her whetstone without hesitation, using her as the perfect spur to sharpen herself further.

But since she could not win, it only made sense to switch careers on the spot and become an assistant instead.

Really, was there any horse girl in the world who could reject the ultimate goal of being faster, stronger, greater? Of course not. Which meant all this nonsense about horseplay and transfers was beside the point. What mattered was to immediately begin exploring the absolute limit of speed.

But before that, Agnes Tachyon dropped flat onto the grass and declared, "Come on then—get on top of me head-on!"

She intended to use outrageous language to irritate Xingyun Liuge, thereby forcing Liuge to put all her attention back on running.

It was a marvelous strategy she had learned from the British: if you wanted someone to accept a certain proposal, simple—give them two options that were fundamentally the same, then add one that was completely unacceptable. Would they not then "voluntarily" choose the path you wanted them to?

And it was only because Daiwa Scarlet so clearly admired Xingyun Liuge that Tachyon had used her as the test case. Otherwise, she would never have used Daiwa at all. She would have chosen someone like Mejiro Ardan, the proper young lady of a great family, or someone like Mrs. C. B. with a truly outrageous figure.

For all that Agnes Tachyon seemed spectacularly unreliable, when it came to things concerning Daiwa Scarlet, she was deadly serious.

But Xingyun Liuge's reply instantly left her in a dilemma:

"Come to Epsom. Let me see what you can do."

The challenge hung there in the air, crisp and unmistakable.
