Francesca offered a tentative smile but couldn't even return it no matter how much she tried. "Mama said you wished to see me this morning."
Penelope's chest tightened.
She didn't exactly wish to, but was required to. The thought of it made her feel agitated at how life played out. Once, she discouraged the idea, and now she was supposed to encourage it.
She'd somehow thought Francesca would pay her no heed, especially after these past weeks. The last thing she wanted was her sister noticing her in this state, but also frightened that she might see her as a disappointment too.
After all, she failed them all and brought additional disgrace upon their household. Perhaps Francesca didn't realize the gravity of what she'd done, and if she did, Penelope had no doubt she'd react with the same disappointment as Lady Sophia.
Still, she nodded slowly. "Sit with me."
