When I opened the curtains that morning, my eyes widened to see a fresh blanket of snow on the ground. This made for my Fourth winter in the new world, and even then, the Winters here had not lost their luster.
I can't even remember the last time I had enjoyed the snow in the old world. Life was busy, and the area I lived in didn't see a whole lot of snow. The thing about snow is that it's really only special when you're young, because when you get older, not only does it lose its luster, but you start to see all the reasons why snow really isn't all that great. This includes things like snow removal, getting snow in your shoes, potential ice that forms underneath as the snow warms in the day and cools at night.
I always wondered if that kind of disdain and trauma would follow me into this new world, but lucky for me, it hasn't. Neither me nor Rudy could contain the pure joy on our faces as we saw that glistening sheet of white powdery goodness covering our yard and stretching out into the horizon. Snow looks so different in the countryside as opposed to the city.
Everything looks so pretty in nature documentaries, and sometimes you have to wonder if they just find out the good parts of the world and leave all the shitty shots out. I'm quickly realizing it isn't just the specific shots. It's literally just nature itself. No matter where I go in this new world, it's all just so stunning. It's all unbelievable, but I have to. This is my reality now. I literally just live in a fucking nature documentary now.
Down in the kitchen we all sat around as Lilia and Roxy served us a nice warm breakfast they made. Roxy doesn't always help with the cooking, but every so often she tastes something she likes and will spend minutes beating around the bush just so she can ask how she can make that same thing. Momma and Lilia are amazing cooks, so I really don't blame her at all. I've tried to help, but momma says I have to wait another year until I can start learning. Such double standards! I'm sure the spells we're learning are way more dangerous than some simple cooking!
The cup in front of me was filled with what was becoming my favorite drink of all time. It was a hot cider made from a fruit I wasn't familiar with. It was warm, sweet and filled me with the most brilliant tingle! I'm pretty sure there's a low alcohol content in this thing, but who cares? This stuff is good for sure!
"Isn't this stuff good?" Rudy asked.
I nodded my head.
"For sure!"
Momma entered the room with a grin and struck a coy pose.
"Lucky for you two, I can make you this stuff all winter long!"
We couldn't help but grin.
"Alright now, don't get too coz…cozzz….cozy now…" Roxy muttered, getting lost in her own cup. "We still need to do lessons today."
I looked up with pleading eyes.
"Can't we just take a break because of the snow?"
Roxy gave me a smiling glare.
"That's all the more reason to do a lesson. There's some spells I wanted to teach you both some control exercises that I wasn't able to teach you last year because you were both still at early levels. But now you've both learned so much that if we don't learn those exercises, it's going to put you behind several months in learning and we don't want that!"
I took another sip of my cup.
"But wouldn't that mean you could stay longer?"
Roxy let out a sigh.
"Haven't you learned by now? Or do I still need to pound it into your head girl? Efficiency is everything, and if that means I have to leave you all sooner, so be it. I don't want to stall just because we're having such a good time, so let's stand up and get out there right now! Come on, I mean it– let's stand up and go out right now!"
Next thing we knew, Roxy was pushing us out the door and into the cold. As soon as the door opened, it closed just as quickly. There was an awkward pause, and then Roxy turned to look at us.
"Okay. Maybe we should get some coats on first."
Back in our room we both put our coats on together. It was in this moment that I realized something odd. Putting on our coats in the same room together was nothing, that is to say, it was the most normal innocent thing ever, but we'd done more than that already. Our normal morning routine included changing in front of each other, and while I had excused it since we were so young, it became so normal I forgot that at one point I would need to draw a line. That point should have been shortly after we had turned four, but I had forgotten.
Maybe I should mention something here, draw a line and begin new rules… but if that line starts a new relationship between us? One more distant and respectful than before.
Does close family respect each other? Or are they close because respect isn't required? Are things like privacy really so important that it justifies creating distance that wasn't there bef–
"Alright! Let's get out there!" Rudeus announced cutting through my thoughts.
This wasn't the first time he had done this, in fact, this was probably why I couldn't think too hard about anything any more. Every time I tried to rationalize a situation, he'd cut through and then I'd have to intercept whatever he was doing–
"Come on! Let's go already!"
Out the door we went! I was a thinker once… I think that's changed now, but you know what? I'm happier. Life is more exciting. I feel like doing stuff just for the sake of doing it. Whatever this is, I'd rather have it than whatever I was trying to rationalize. Stepping out into the cold ready to try something new, I could hardly tell that I could see my breath and that the wind chill was actually horrible. Seeing Rudy and Roxy stand out in the yard ready to go got me energized.
"This is a good chance for you two to really up the amount of power in your fire spells."
Rudy gave her a look.
"Okay? And that means?"
"Pure incineration of the snow around you. I don't want you to just melt the snow on this wall, I want you to hit it with a fire spell so hot it instantly turns into vapor."
Roxy then pointed her staff at the wall, said her chant, and did just that. A brilliant ball of flame appeared, flew at the snow on the wall, burst and left a vapor of cloud behind after dissipating.
"Did you look closely at what I just did?"
Both Rudy and I had seen her do crazier stuff than this, but for some reason, this one hit different. It was no longer Roxy flexing her skill, but rather showing us the next step we needed in order to control our mana flow, increase the power input of our spells, and really hone our control of our spells as a whole. Mastering this would no doubt allow us not only to grasp more complex spells, but also start chaining spells together in a way that they wouldn't cancel each other out. Magic really was an intricate craft, and for all our chances, we happened to get paired with who might possibly be one of the greatest teachers of magic fundamentals alive.
We just stood there quietly for a moment, and then Rudy stepped forward with a halfway serious look on his face.
"Alright. Let me have a try at that."
He stretched his hand out in front and began to form the fireball in his hand; no chant of course. It didn't look as refined as Roxy's, and when he let it fly at the snow, it did hit, and it did turn some of the snow into vapor, but it also failed to melt some of it, and it revealed the gray stone wall underneath with splotches of darker gray.
Rudy grimaced.
"Okay. So maybe that wasn't perfect."
Roxy nodded.
"You didn't use quite enough power there, but it's alright. We've still got plenty of spaces on the wall to practice, and if we're lucky, we'll get even more snow to cover the areas we used up already."
Rudy kept practicing for the next hour, and while they did try to push me to try, I wasn't quite ready to try it until after that hour had passed. By that time, Rudy had been able to successfully do it once or twice, but not consistently. When I did finally give it a try– it was completely wrong. I barely turned anything into vapor. Rudy wins this one again, the little shit.
It was about noon when Aneste wandered around and found us practicing. By that time, Rudy was getting pretty close to being consistent, but I, on the other hand, had maybe gotten one try that was similar to Rudy's first try. Some of us got the magic gene better than the rest of us. It's not my fault I'm struggling. Rudy is just that good at magic. There. I can finally admit it to myself. Rudy is better at magic than me. Fuck. I feel gross just saying that to myself. I can't let him win.
I tried harder and harder, and before I knew it, it was late afternoon and we had to conclude our practice. Roxy gave me headpats, and while they made me feel a little better, they also made me want to cry. I don't want pity. I want to beat his ass!
"OH! OH! I think! I'm feeling something!" I heard cry out from beside me.
I looked to see Aneste forming something in her hand. It almost looked like– fire? I had to drop everything to see what she was doing and so did Rudy and Roxy. The fire forming in her hand got bigger, and bigger, and BIGGER, AND BIGGER– POOF! I just disappeared out of nowhere and she fell to the ground with a thrust.
"Oh– yikes… um… I think you lost control of that fireball Aneste." Roxy explained helping her up.
We both looked at her confused. Rudy shot her a look.
"Wait, that doesn't make sense, master. Wouldn't it have flown off somewhere random if she had lost control?"
"Didn't you see her hit the ground? The energy dispersed, it just moved to her rather than outwards in a proper fireball. That's why mana control is so important, especially in larger doses."
We both looked at Aneste who was starting to wobble a bit. Roxy quickly got under her and wrapped Aneste's arm around her. Aneste passed out shortly after.
"She used too much at once! This may be her first time ever using magic, so she wasn't prepared for the output and energy it requires! Once she wakes up, you outta talk her out of learning magic. It looks like she really doesn't have that much mana after all."
Rudy stepped in quickly.
"Wait! The same thing happened to me when I started learning magic!"
"Huh? Really? You never told me that!"
"You never asked!"
"Leah? Is that true?"
"Yeah. Momma had thought that Rudy wet his pants or something because he was so little."
"You were little too!"
Roxy wore a pondering face.
"Let's get her inside for now. If what you said is true, then maybe there's certain things about magic that's actually false. This could open a whole new branch of research if proven to be true. Also… I think I might change my mind as far as teaching Aneste is concerned. I want to see if she can expand her mana pool, and I need both your help in order to figure out how to do it."
I perked up.
"You're really going to teach Aneste magic then?!"
Roxy nodded while carrying Aneste towards the house.
"Just for a little bit. Just until I'm done teaching you and Rudy."
Rudy walked beside us and then widened his eyes.
"I think I know why it was so hard for Aneste to use magic before."
Roxy looked back at him while grabbing the doorknob.
"Oh? What's your theory?"
"It's because Aneste probably is weak in other types of magic except for fire magic."
Roxy nodded.
"You know? You're probably right! It isn't common for mages to be generally weak in most types of magic, but maybe she's an exception. We'll have to test that theory starting tomorrow!"
We brought Aneste inside and laid her on a mat of blankets. Momma and Lilia then insisted we be more careful and that we should get back to our lessons. The day continued on, and I eventually was able to get at least one decent shot at turning the snow into vapor before our lessons were over. We then headed inside to wait for papa to come home from a monster patrol so he could run sword lessons with us.
He was really late that day, and when he did finally come home it was evening and he was a real mess. There was blood caked on him and he smelled bad. It was probably a really rough day for him.
"Sorry I'm so late. We'll probably have to cancel lessons for the day." he told us.
Me and Rudy nodded understandingly. Momma then moved in on him peeling his coat and outer layers off.
"Dear, I mean this with all the love in the world, but you smell and need to get a bath fast."
"Yeah. I'm with you there. But just so you know, I'm going to need someone to scrub my back if you know what I mean."
"Oh? I was going to suggest that as well."
Momma started giving him lusty eyes and I knew what they were planning. These two couldn't be more shameless if they tried.
