Chapter 33 - Chapter 33 – The Decision Engine

Chapter 33 – The Decision Engine

The white erasure spread across Black Hollow.

Not like light.

Not like fog.

Like deletion.

Everything it touched became uncertain.

Buildings flickered.

Streets lost their names.

Windows forgot what they reflected.

Even time itself seemed unable to decide which moment came next.

At the center of it all stood Cr-Hook.

Motionless.

Patient.

Its hook remained suspended above the village square.

The chain attached to it stretched beyond sight, disappearing into a place that should not exist.

And now the hook was no longer pulling.

It was measuring.

---

Evetyl Clarke could feel it.

Every memory.

Every choice.

Every version of herself.

Being examined.

Judged.

Compared.

The sensation was unbearable.

She saw fragments of lives she had never lived.

Cities she had never visited.

Conversations she had never had.

Deaths she had never experienced.

Yet somehow they all belonged to her.

Or had belonged to her.

Once.

---

Inside the white corridor of her mind, the reflection stood silently.

No more smiles.

No more riddles.

It simply watched.

Waiting.

The corridor around them was disappearing piece by piece.

The walls dissolving into white static.

The floor fading beneath their feet.

Even this place was being reviewed.

---

"What happens now?" Evetyl asked.

The reflection looked at her.

"Now the engine decides."

Evetyl frowned.

"What engine?"

The reflection slowly pointed upward.

---

For the first time, Evetyl noticed it.

Above them.

Far above.

Hidden beyond the ceiling of the corridor.

Something enormous was moving.

A machine.

Not mechanical.

Not biological.

Not alive.

Not dead.

A structure made entirely from decisions.

Billions of interconnected pathways.

Infinite calculations.

Endless evaluations.

All focused on one purpose.

Determining what was allowed to continue existing.

---

Outside, Clara suddenly stumbled.

A stream of white symbols appeared around her.

Flowing through the air.

Circling her body.

Analyzing her.

Arden cursed under his breath.

"Too late."

Clara looked alarmed.

"What is it doing?"

Arden answered immediately.

"It's checking your continuity."

---

"What does that mean?"

His expression darkened.

"It means the engine noticed you."

---

The words sent fear through her instantly.

Because Cr-Hook wasn't even looking at her.

Yet she could feel something studying her.

Something vast.

Something impossible.

Something hidden beyond the visible layers of reality.

---

BOOM.

The pulse returned.

But it sounded different now.

Organized.

Precise.

Like a clock advancing.

A system progressing through stages.

---

The silhouette beyond reality moved again.

Faster this time.

The darkness around it folded inward as it approached.

The figure was no longer merely observing.

It was coming.

Directly toward Black Hollow.

---

Cr-Hook finally reacted.

Its head turned toward the horizon.

For the first time, its expression changed.

Recognition.

---

"External interference escalating."

Its voice echoed across all three overlapping versions of the village.

---

The silhouette answered.

And when it spoke, entire sections of the sky cracked.

"You are exceeding jurisdiction."

---

Cr-Hook remained motionless.

"Correction supersedes containment."

---

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Ancient.

---

Then the silhouette laughed.

Not loudly.

Not mockingly.

Genuinely.

As though it had heard something absurd.

---

"Correction?"

The darkness surrounding it expanded.

Reality trembled.

"You think this is still a correction?"

---

For the first time, uncertainty entered Cr-Hook's posture.

Only slightly.

But enough.

---

Inside the corridor, the reflection looked upward.

The machine above them accelerated.

Its pathways brightened.

Its calculations intensified.

---

Then a new symbol appeared.

Floating between Evetyl and the reflection.

A single word.

CLASSIFICATION

---

The reflection's face became grim.

"It's choosing."

---

Evetyl stared at the symbol.

The word slowly rotated.

Examining them.

Measuring them.

Comparing them.

---

Then another word appeared.

REAL

---

A third.

ERROR

---

A fourth.

ANOMALY

---

The symbols circled faster.

The machine above roared to life.

And for the first time, Evetyl understood the true danger.

The engine wasn't trying to decide who she was.

It was trying to decide if she should exist at all.

---

Outside, Clara's symbols suddenly turned red.

Arden immediately stepped toward her.

"Don't move."

Clara looked terrified.

"What does red mean?"

Arden didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

---

Cr-Hook spoke.

And the entire village heard it.

"Secondary divergence confirmed."

---

The hook shifted.

Very slightly.

Toward Clara.

---

"No," Arden said immediately.

---

For the first time, emotion appeared in his voice.

Real emotion.

Fear.

---

The silhouette beyond reality stopped advancing.

Its attention shifted.

Not toward Cr-Hook.

Not toward Black Hollow.

Toward Clara.

---

Then it said something that made everyone freeze.

Including Cr-Hook.

---

"Interesting."

A pause.

"She's not supposed to be here either."

---

Silence consumed every version of the village.

---

Inside the corridor, the classification symbols stopped spinning.

The machine above reached a conclusion.

The word REAL vanished.

The word ERROR vanished.

The word ANOMALY remained.

---

And somewhere deep beyond reality—

something accepted the result.
