Chapter 24 – The Thing Beneath the Church

The fifth bell strike echoed across Black Hollow.

The ground trembled.

Cracks spread through the cobblestones of the village square.

Windows shattered throughout the village.

The fog twisted violently between the buildings.

And from somewhere deep beneath the church—

something moved.

Evetyl Clarke felt it immediately.

Not through sound.

Not through sight.

Through instinct.

Something ancient had awakened.

Something that should have remained asleep.

The figure known only as Arden stared at the church.

For the first time since appearing, the certainty in his eyes was gone.

The possibilities surrounding the square began retreating.

Fast.

The fisherman with six arms vanished into the fog.

The woman made of mist dissolved completely.

Dozens of fragments fled through the streets.

Running.

Hiding.

Escaping.

Every possibility in Black Hollow was afraid.

Evetyl felt her stomach tighten.

"What is happening?"

Clara didn't answer.

Her attention remained fixed on the church.

Arden spoke instead.

"It woke up."

The words were simple.

Yet they carried a weight that made Evetyl's blood run cold.

Another bell strike echoed.

The church doors shook violently.

Something hit them from the inside.

Once.

Twice.

A third impact followed.

The old wood splintered.

The entire building groaned.

As though something below was trying to force its way out.

Arden took a step forward.

For the first time, Evetyl saw genuine concern on his face.

"It wasn't supposed to wake yet."

Clara looked at him sharply.

"What do you mean yet?"

Arden didn't answer immediately.

His gaze remained fixed on the church.

Then he said something that made Evetyl's heart stop.

"Because the curse isn't the real problem."

Silence followed.

Even the fog seemed to hesitate.

Evetyl stared at him.

"What?"

Arden slowly turned toward her.

"The Silent Curse was never the prison."

A pause.

"It was the lock."

The sixth bell rang.

The church walls cracked.

A large fracture spread across the stone tower.

Dust poured into the square.

The entire structure trembled.

Evetyl felt fear rise inside her chest.

Not because she fully understood.

Because she didn't.

And somehow that felt worse.

"What exactly is inside the church?" she asked.

Arden's expression darkened.

"Something that should not exist."

The answer sent a chill through the square.

Another impact struck the church doors.

This time they partially opened.

Darkness leaked through the gap.

Not shadows.

Not absence of light.

Darkness.

Living darkness.

It flowed across the church steps like black smoke.

The possibilities that remained nearby immediately fled.

Some screamed.

Others simply vanished.

Arden took another step forward.

Clara grabbed Evetyl's arm.

"We need to leave."

Evetyl looked at her.

"Leave?"

"Now."

"But what about—"

"NOW."

The urgency in Clara's voice stunned her.

Before Evetyl could respond—

the church doors exploded.

Wood fragments flew across the square.

Stone cracked.

The tower bell rang one final time.

Then silence.

Complete silence.

The darkness poured from the church entrance.

Thick.

Endless.

Hungry.

The temperature across the village dropped instantly.

Frost formed on windows.

Ice spread across the fountain.

Even the fog seemed to freeze.

Then two eyes opened inside the darkness.

Evetyl stopped breathing.

The eyes were enormous.

Far too large to belong to any human shape.

Ancient gold light burned within them.

Watching.

Observing.

Remembering.

The village trembled.

Every building groaned.

Every shadow stretched.

And from deep within the darkness—

a voice spoke.

Not loud.

Not angry.

Not monstrous.

Just ancient.

"So..."

The single word echoed through Black Hollow.

Arden's jaw tightened.

Clara looked horrified.

Evetyl couldn't move.

The voice continued.

"Someone finally broke the question."

The darkness shifted.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The eyes focused on Evetyl.

Directly on Evetyl.

And suddenly she understood something terrifying.

It knew who she was.

Not her name.

Not her face.

Something deeper.

Something older.

The ancient voice spoke again.

This time with unmistakable interest.

"Evetyl Clarke."

Her blood turned to ice.

She had never told it her name.

No one had.

Yet it knew.

The eyes narrowed slightly.

Almost curious.

Almost amused.

And then the thing beneath the church asked a question.

A question that made even Arden go pale.

"Do you remember your first life?"

Silence consumed the village.

Evetyl stared at the enormous golden eyes.

Her heart pounded violently.

Because she had no idea what the creature meant.

But somewhere deep inside her mind—

something stirred.

A memory.

A voice.

A place she had never seen.

And for the briefest moment—

it felt familiar.
