Chapter 12 - NOTICING ME

I was just beginning to underline a line in the folder when the air changed again.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just enough that my body knew before my mind did.

My head lifted.

The corridor outside my desk had gone still.

Conversation lowered.

Typing slowed.

One woman near the far office straightened in her chair.

I didn't need to look to know who was coming.

Still, I did.

Adrian walked onto the floor with a file in one hand and a phone in the other, his expression composed in that effortless way that made the rest of us seem like we were constantly trying too hard. His suit was charcoal today, his shirt pale against the dark fabric, sleeves perfectly set at his wrists. His tie was not quite as tight as yesterday's.

A small detail.

A human one.

The kind I noticed because I noticed him.

He was speaking to someone beside him, his voice low and measured. Then his gaze shifted, casually sweeping across the floor.

And stopped at my desk.

I forgot how to breathe.

Not in the dramatic sense. Not in the way novels liked to describe it.

In the actual, inconvenient, physical sense where my lungs simply refused to do their job for one long second, and my fingers tightened around the cup so hard I thought I might dent the cardboard.

Adrian looked at me.

Just for a moment.

But his eyes softened in a way that felt like a secret.

Then he turned back to the man beside him and continued walking.

I stared after him longer than I should have.

Long enough for my heartbeat to misbehave.

Long enough for Marisa to appear beside my desk out of nowhere and say, without looking at me, "You're doing that thing again."

I nearly dropped my coffee.

"What thing?"

"Looking like the world has become very complicated and you're pretending it hasn't."

My face went hot.

"I'm not."

Marisa finally glanced at me, one brow lifting.

I stopped talking.

She knew.

Of course she knew.

People like Marisa seemed to know things before you told them.

"Walk with me," she said, as if she hadn't just peeled my thoughts apart with one sentence.

I stood quickly, too quickly, and tucked the folder under one arm. My pulse was still too loud when we moved toward the guest suites.

The floor walkthrough was efficient, full of details I tried hard to absorb without letting my mind drift. Marisa pointed out service corridors, privacy routes for VIP arrivals, emergency guest response procedures, and the exact standards expected on luxury floors. I listened. I really did. But my attention kept snagging on her hands as she spoke, steady, precise, used to command, and on the way, she glanced at every room before entering it, like she believed mistakes lived in blind spots.

It was impressive.

The kind of competence I wanted to have.

We were in the middle of a guest suite when my phone buzzed in my pocket.

I froze.

Marisa noticed at once. "If that's personal, handle it after the walkthrough."

"It's just I pulled the phone out, glanced down, and went still.

A message from Adrian.

My entire body responded before I could stop it.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Marisa's gaze flicked to my face.

"You can read it," she said, voice neutral.

I swallowed and opened the message.

Adrian: Marisa will be strict. Don't take it personally.

Adrian: Also, your first-week notes are on the desk if you need them.

For a second, I just stared.

He had remembered to leave notes.

Not for the interns in general.

For me.

My chest tightened in a way that felt almost painful.

I could picture him doing it, bending slightly over my desk when no one was looking, pen in hand, his mouth set in that serious line he wore when he was concentrating. I could almost see his fingers pause against the paper. The thought made heat rush quietly through me.

Marisa spoke again, and I nearly jumped.

"You're blushing."

"I am not."

Her mouth twitched. "You are."

I looked away fast enough to make myself dizzy.

It was ridiculous how much one message could do to me.

One text.

That was all.

And suddenly I was sixteen again, heart racing over something that looked harmless to everyone else.

Marisa opened another suite door and kept talking as if nothing had happened, but I was only half listening now. My fingers had gone cold around the phone. I looked down at the message once more, then typed a quick reply before I could overthink it.

Ava: Thank you. I'll try not to look too terrified.

Three dots appeared almost immediately.

I nearly tripped over my own feet.

Marisa pretended not to notice.

Adrian: Too late.

I stared at the screen.

Then, because I was apparently committed to making my own life harder, I smiled.

Tiny.

Private.

Unhelpful.

I typed back before I could stop myself.

Ava: I hate that you can read me that easily.

The reply came back after a pause just long enough to make my heart ache with anticipation.

Adrian: You never were very good at hiding nerves.

I stopped walking.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for Marisa to glance back at me.

"You okay?"

I nodded quickly, throat suddenly tight.

The message sat on my screen like it had weight.

He remembered that about me.

Not just the girl I had been.

Me.

The real me.

The nervous little tells I thought only Lily and Mom ever noticed. The way I pressed my thumb against my finger when I was anxious. The way my eyes dropped first when I was trying not to be seen. The way I held myself too straight when I wanted to disappear.

He knew.

The realization hit softly.

Then all at once.

My chest felt too full.

Too strange.

Too alive.

I put the phone away and followed Marisa into the next room, but everything felt slightly different now. The carpet under my shoes seemed softer. The light outside the windows seemed brighter. The air felt thinner and more awake.

Adrian wasn't just the man I loved from a distance anymore.

He was here.

On this floor.

Reading my nerves through text messages.

Noticing me.

The thought made my hands tremble once before I curled them into fists at my sides and forced them still.

Because whatever this was becoming

I could feel it.

And it was only day one.
