Chapter 81 - 81

Chapter 5: The Underground Academy

That night, Ren couldn't sleep. The "Static-Burst" from the owl had left a lingering itch in his mind. Following a hunch, he crept out of the Heart Ranch dorms and headed toward the "Iron-Skelton"—the abandoned industrial ruins of the old ATC headquarters that sat in the shadow of the World-Tree.

"Pip, keep the heat low," Ren whispered. The newt's scales glowed a faint, dull red, acting as a dim flashlight in the rusted corridors.

As they descended into the sub-basements, the Silver Pulse began to fade. The air felt heavy, smelling of ozone and old, rotting copper. Suddenly, Pip let out a sharp hiss.

Ren ducked behind a pile of discarded mana-pipes. Around the corner, a group of students—including Zane—were gathered in a circle. In the center was a man wearing a familiar grey suit: Director Vane's successor, a man named Krell.

"The Silver Pulse is a cage," Krell was saying, his voice a smooth, oily baritone. "Leo Heart wanted to make you 'Equal' to the beasts. But why be equal when you can be Superior? The old system gave you ranks. It gave you power that didn't require 'Bonding' or 'Kindness'. It just required the right code."

He held up a vial of Liquid-Static. "This is 'Over-Clock'. Inject it into your partner's core, and they will bypass the Silver Pulse's limits. You'll have the power of the Old Sovereigns without the burden of their morality."

Ren watched in horror as Zane stepped forward. "My hound... it's too slow. The Heart family always has the best pets just because of their blood. I want to win."

Zane took the vial and injected it into the Chrome-Hound's neck. The dog let out a sound that wasn't a bark—it was a mechanical scream. Its fur began to slough off, replaced by jagged, obsidian plates. Its eyes turned into glowing red LEDs.

"Perfect," Krell smiled. "Tomorrow, in the second round, you will show the world that the 'Silver Age' is over. The 'Digital Era' returns."

Ren's foot slipped on a loose pipe, let out a loud CLANG.

"Who's there?" Krell snapped.

"Run, Pip!" Ren didn't wait. He bolted back toward the surface, the sounds of the augmented Chrome-Hound's heavy, metallic paws echoing behind him.

He scrambled through the rusted vents, his gold eye flaring with panic. The hound was faster than any natural beast. It was closing in, its red eyes cutting through the dark like lasers.

"Ren! Up here!"

A hand reached down from a vent above. Ren grabbed it and was pulled up just as the Chrome-Hound's jaws snapped shut on the air below him. His savior was Elara, her Cloud-Cat standing protectively over her.

"I saw you leave the dorms," she whispered. "I knew Zane was up to something."

"They're using the 'Trash Data' as a drug, Elara," Ren panted, holding Pip close. "Krell is building a 'Digital Army' inside the school. The tournament... it's going to be a massacre."

"We have to tell Samuel," Elara said.

"No," Ren shook his head, looking at Pip. "If we tell the faculty, they'll stop the tournament and go into lockdown. Krell will just vanish into the shadows again. We have to beat them in the arena. We have to show the world that a 'Real Bond' is stronger than 'Over-Clocked Code'."

Ren looked at the little Copper-Scaled Newt. It looked so small, so fragile compared to the obsidian-plated monster he had just seen.

"Pip," Ren whispered. "I think it's time we found out why Uncle Leo left you at the ranch for me."

As the suns began to rise on the day of the second round, Ren didn't feel like a "Trash-Tamer" anymore. He felt like a Guardian. The final battle for the Manual of Life wasn't going to be fought by gods in the sky—it was going to be fought by a boy and a newt in a circle of sand.
