Lord Ryde turned his eyes back to the window, thinking about his daughter locked in a cell.
"But she doesn't even care," Lord Ryde said. His voice was dripping with contempt. "Isabel only cares about expensive dresses and stealing a man who does not want her, a man who would soon be dead. She cares nothing for the survival of this family."
He shook his head slowly.
"Now she has caused this problem because of her stupidity," Lord Ryde stated coldly. "I told her to drop it. I specifically ordered her to let the matter go. And now, she awaits a royal trial. She will be questioned by the royal court."
Lord Ryde looked back at the guard. He spread his empty hands out to his sides.
"Where does this leave me?" Lord Ryde asked.
The guard remained frozen on the floor. He did not know what to say. He was just a soldier. He did not know how to comfort a noble. He did not know if the Earl actually wanted him to answer the rhetorical question, or if he should just remain silent.
