Bond by Shadow — Chapter 1: The Eyes That See

The streets of the city were quiet, almost too quiet, as Adrian Vale walked home from school. Streetlights cast weak pools of yellow light over the cracked asphalt, but the shadows between them seemed to stretch unnaturally, moving just slightly when he wasn't looking directly at them.

Adrian rubbed at his eyes, trying to shake off the creeping sense of unease. He had learned, long ago, that the feeling of being watched was never wrong. For as long as he could remember, he had seen things no one else could. Shadows with human shapes that lingered too long, figures peering from corners, eyes glowing faintly in the dark.

People didn't believe him. They laughed. Or worse, they pitied him. Over time, he had learned to stay silent. To avoid drawing attention. But tonight… tonight the feeling was stronger, sharper.

He passed the narrow alley near the corner of Maple Street, and something made him pause.

A shadow shifted. It moved against the flow of light. Not like a person, not like an animal. It slithered, curling along the walls.

Adrian's pulse quickened. Not again…

The alley's darkness deepened, thickening almost like smoke. Two glowing eyes appeared within it, and he recognized the shape immediately: a Wraith.

The Wraith's limbs were grotesque, elongated, moving in angles that shouldn't exist. Its claws scraped against the brick walls with a shrill sound, sending shivers down his spine. Its eyes fixed on him with a hunger that made his stomach turn.

Adrian stumbled backward. "No… not here… not now…" he whispered, but the creature didn't pause. It lunged forward, claws outstretched.

He froze. Every muscle in his body screamed at him to run, but his feet refused to obey.

Then—a sudden whoosh of wind. A figure appeared, sliding from the darkness as if born from it.

Adrian's breath caught.

A boy, tall and sharp-featured, black hair falling just above piercing blue eyes, moved with inhuman speed. His hand extended, and shadowy tendrils spiraled from his palm, wrapping around the Wraith before it could strike.

The creature shrieked, twisted violently, then dissolved into black smoke that vanished into the night.

Adrian's knees almost gave way. He barely dared to breathe.

The boy turned to him, calm but intense. "You can see them, can't you?"

Adrian's throat went dry. "…Yes."

The boy's gaze softened ever so slightly, and he exhaled a long breath. "That's… bad."

"…Bad?" Adrian asked, frowning.

"Because now I have to protect you," the boy said simply. His eyes flicked over the dark alley, alert for any remaining movement. "And trust me, I don't protect just anyone."

Adrian's mind spun. Who… is he? His heart, for reasons he didn't understand, began to race—not entirely from fear.

The boy extended a hand. "Name's Kai. Kai Draven. You're lucky I arrived when I did. If I hadn't…"

He didn't finish the sentence, but Adrian understood enough.

The Wraiths, the shadows, the things only he could see—they weren't just hallucinations. They were real. And he was now caught in a world he had never truly known.

Kai gave him a hard look, then gestured toward the alley exit. "Move. I'll explain on the way. But stay alert. They'll be back."

Adrian swallowed hard, his mind racing with questions he didn't yet have answers for. Who is he? Why does he exist? And… why does my chest feel like it's both terrified and… alive?

He followed Kai, stepping carefully over the uneven ground, shadows dancing around them. The city never looked so dangerous, yet strangely alive.

As they reached the street, Kai glanced at him. "By the way… you need to know—what you just saw isn't an isolated incident. They know you exist now. And they won't stop coming."

Adrian's heart sank. "They won't stop…?"

Kai's eyes were serious, unyielding. "No. And trust me, Adrian… surviving this world isn't about hiding. It's about learning to fight. Starting tonight, you're not alone. But the world you knew? That's gone. There's no going back."

Adrian's stomach twisted. The fear was sharp, but beneath it, a strange thrill began to rise. Something in him stirred at the thought of being drawn into the darkness and still standing beside someone who could control it.

Kai's gaze softened again—just slightly, just enough to make Adrian's pulse skip. "Don't worry. I'll keep you alive. But you need to start learning. Now."

The city stretched around them, quiet and shadowed, but Adrian knew one thing: nothing would ever be the same again. Not for him. Not for the boy named Kai.

And somewhere deep inside, he realized he didn't just want to survive. He wanted to see how far this bond could go—how far they could go… together.
