Chapter 9 - The First Blood

A loud crash happened on the street. Zane looked through the window of his class as he happened to be on the second floor; all the students rushed to the window. Then he heard a screech, like a monster from fairy tales. He looked at the road only to see a dark entity emanating from underneath a car.

"What in the heavens is that?" He said under his breath.

He looked around; no one else seemed to notice.

"Lily!" He rushed out of the room.

"Oi, Zane!" Marcus was about to rush out with him.

"And where are you going, Mr. Marcus?" The teacher asked.

"Lily!" He jumped the stairs and landed heavily on one leg, not minding the pain; he dashed to her class. She was already outside, running towards him.

"What is that thing? And why can't anyone see it?" She asked.

"I don't know, Lily, but we need to get out of here as soon as possible."

"What of the others?"

"It's after us, not after them."

"How can you be so sure?" She broke free from his grasp, and they halted.

"I'm not leaving them." She continued.

Just as she was about to turn around, the wall a few meters in front of them broke, and the demon-looking creature was in front of them.

"Lily!" They began to run the opposite way, towards the stairwell.

It lunged toward them, too fast. But they made it in time to the stairs. It bumped into the wall and broke it, gave a loud screech, and got back up.

Zane began taking off his gloves; perhaps his magic could work this time and save them.

"Go on!" He signaled his sister.

She looked at him and didn't argue, then continued out of the school. Running as fast as she could.

Zane ran into the fencing hall, grabbed anything he could find; fortunately, it was an Épée. He ran to the opposite side of the hall and waited for the demon to come in.

A sinister creature, nearly two meters tall, walked in. The room immediately got dark and filled with a choking aura. Zane clenched his fingers tightly to the weapon. The demon looked at him, analyzed his weapon, and recreated the same thing out of the shadows.

"What in the world. It's sapient."

It dashed across the room and swung its weapon. Zane managed to get out of the way but still got struck. It turned around and whooshed towards Zane as fast as he could; even with improper footing, he was able to parry the attack. He fell; the demon didn't stop there. It intended to strike him even on the floor. Zane raised his weapon and parried it again. While in that position, the demon dragged him across the room and slammed him back first towards a wall, breaking it, causing Zane to spit blood. Then it sent a punch to his face, slamming it against the concrete wall.

He fell to the ground; the demon picked him up by the hair, pulled him to the center of the hall, and stepped on his face repeatedly. Then, for the last step, it infused energy into its stomp and smashed it against Zane's now bruised face. Smashing his head into the ground, the force was so large that the ground broke up to six feet around his head.

"Oh my gosh." A terrified voice said from the entrance. It was Lily; the demon noticed her but didn't approach her. It picked Zane up; he was still in there, gasping for air, trying to speak, spitting blood. His teeth were gone, most of them. He looked at Lily, then his eyes rolled backwards; he stopped fighting.

It raised its weapon and transformed it into a spike, placed it on Zane's heart area, and pierced in slowly. As soon as the spike got to his heart, Zane's eyes flashed open, no pupils or iris, just the sclera that had turned pure black. He grabbed the spike on the sharp edges, looked the demon in its eyes, and said:

"Mori."

The space between them, insignificant as it seemed, simply wasn't there anymore. For the briefest instant, separation itself ceased to exist. Then reality corrected itself. Space rushed back into place with violent precision, releasing a shockwave that hurled both Zane and the demon into opposite walls.

His eyes reverted; they were about to close when he saw the demon come down from the wall, looking in pain. "It's sentient too." He said to himself and smiled. He was almost out cold when he saw the light lady appear, stab the demon in its heart, and it disappeared with ease.
