This was the first thing Ned noticed when Pycelle's assistant brought it to his solar — the absence of a title, the plain dark leather of the binding worn smooth at the corners from handling, the kind of wear that accumulated over years of being taken down and replaced and taken down again by hands that needed what was inside it repeatedly.

He had been reading it for three nights.
Not because it was difficult reading — the prose was dry and administrative, the work of a maester who had understood his commission as the accurate recording of bloodlines rather than the telling of stories, and had executed it with the thorough, unadorned competence of someone who had no literary pretensions and no desire to acquire any. It was not difficult.
It was — puzzling.
This was the word Ned kept returning to in the way he returned to things that refused to be resolved. *Puzzling.* Why had Jon Arryn — a man who had been Hand of the King for seventeen years, a man who had governed the realm with the steady, encyclopedic administrative knowledge of someone who had spent two decades learning every corner of its machinery — why had Jon Arryn been reading a genealogy book in the weeks before his death?
Not for pleasure. Jon had read for information, always — pleasure was not the point.
Not for administration. There was no administrative reason for the Hand to need a comprehensive record of noble bloodlines.
For something else.
For something he was looking for.
Ned turned the pages slowly. He read the Baratheon entries with the specific attention of a man who has started to understand what he is looking for even if he cannot yet see its full shape. The Baratheon line — going back to Orys, the bastard brother of Aegon the Conqueror, the black hair and the black eyes passing down through the generations with the reliability of water finding its level.
*Black hair,* Ned thought.
He turned pages.

He sat in the silent solar and he looked at the candle and he thought about three golden-haired children.

In the morning he went to the Street of Steel.
He had been intending to go for days — had been delaying it with the particular, half-conscious delay of a man who suspects that what he finds will remove the last comfortable possibility and leave only the uncomfortable ones. He had delayed enough.
He dressed plainly.
He took two men — Jory Cassel, who was reliable, and a second guard whose face was not associated with the Hand's household in the way that Jory's was starting to become.
He went into Flea Bottom.

The Street of Steel was exactly what its name described — a street dedicated entirely to the craft of metal, the air above it carrying the permanent smell of forge-fire and hot iron, the sound of hammering a continuous presence that varied in intensity and direction but never fully stopped. Smiths and apprentices and the customers of both occupied the narrow space with the focused, purposeful efficiency of people who were here because the street had exactly what they needed and they were not interested in lingering.
**Tobho Mott's** shop was the finest on the street.
Ned knew this before he arrived — had been told it by Littlefinger in passing, with the casual knowledge of a man who knew the value of everything in the city and tracked it as automatically as breathing. The best steel in King's Landing. The techniques from Qohor. The work that serious buyers went to when they wanted something that was worth what it cost.
He went in.

The shop was good.
He could see it immediately — the quality of the finished work on display, the intelligence of the organization, the specific atmosphere of a craftsman's space that has been made functional by genuine expertise rather than the performance of expertise. The steel hanging on the walls caught the light with the particular character of well-made metal.

The physical labor of it suited him — Ned could see this from the doorway, the way the boy's body had organized itself around the work with the ease of someone who has done this long enough that it has become natural. The arms were already developed beyond what his age strictly explained, the forge-work building on a frame that was — even at this distance, even through the distortion of the yard's heat and light —

Dark-haired.

Ned made himself breathe.
He crossed the yard.
The boy looked up from the bellows as his shadow fell across the work, and the face —
The face was Robert.
Not Robert now — not the king, not the man the throne and the years had made. Robert young. Robert before Ned had known him, perhaps, or Robert at the very beginning of knowing — the jaw and the brow and the particular quality of the eyes, dark and direct, carrying the same unself-conscious physical confidence that Robert had carried his entire life, the confidence of a body that knew its own strength and saw no reason to pretend otherwise.
The boy looked at him without fear. Without deference, precisely — there was the appropriate acknowledgment of a person of quality entering a craftsman's yard, the boy straightening from the bellows and standing fully upright. But underneath that acknowledgment —
The directness.
Robert's directness.
*"My lord,"* the boy said. *"Can I help you?"*
His voice — young, not yet fully settled into whatever it would become. But already with a quality in it that Ned recognized the way you recognize things that are familiar even in unfamiliar contexts.
Ned looked at him.
*"Lord Jon Arryn,"* Ned said carefully. *"He came here. Before his death."*
The boy looked at him steadily.
*"Yes, my lord. He came twice."*
*"What did he want?"*
A slight pause. The boy assessing — measuring the question and the man asking it with an intelligence that was not the smithing kind, that was the other kind, the kind that existed in him separately from the work and was perhaps the more interesting of his qualities.
*"He ordered a sword, my lord. And some armour."* A beat. *"But I think that was not why he came."*
Ned looked at him.
*"No,"* he said quietly. *"I don't think it was either."*
He stood in Tobho Mott's yard and looked at the boy and the boy looked back at him and neither of them said what they were both, in their different ways and with their different knowledge, understanding.
Ned reached into his coat.
*"I'll collect the order tomorrow,"* he said. *"The sword and the armour Lord Arryn commissioned."*
*"Yes, my lord."*
He turned to go.
He stopped.
*"What's your name?"* he asked. His back still turned, the question asked to the yard rather than to the boy, the question of a man who needs to know something and is not certain he should be asking.
*"Gendry, my lord."*
Ned nodded once.
He walked away.
He did not look back.
He did not need to.

He went back to the Tower of the Hand.
He sat at his desk.
He opened the genealogy book.
He looked at the Baratheon entries.
He looked at them for a long time.
Then he closed the book.
He sat in the solar with the afternoon light coming through the window at the particular King's Landing angle that was always slightly wrong, the light of a city built in the wrong place pointing in the wrong direction, and he thought about what he knew and what it meant and what he was going to do about what it meant.
He thought for a long time.
He was still thinking when Littlefinger came.

The knock was Littlefinger's knock.
Ned had learned, over weeks of the man's presence in his life, the specific quality of it — too light for a man his size, the knock of someone who had decided that manner of knocking said something about him that he wanted it to say. Controlled. Precise. The knock of a man who had thought about his knock.
*"Come,"* Ned said.
Littlefinger entered with the expression he always wore — the particular, slightly asymmetrical smile of a man who is amused by something and is letting you see just enough of the amusement to make you want to know the source of it. He was dressed well, as always. He was never not dressed well.
*"Lord Hand,"* he said.
*"Littlefinger."*
*"I have news."* The smile shifting — becoming something less performed and more direct, which was itself notable, because Littlefinger being direct was its own category of information. *"Your wife is in King's Landing."*
Ned went very still.
*"What did you say?"*
*"Lady Catelyn,"* Littlefinger said, with the even patience of someone repeating information to a person who has heard it but needs a moment to process it. *"She arrived this morning. Quietly — she came without the household banner, without announcement."* A pause. *"She wants to see you. Privately."*
*"Privately,"* Ned said.
*"She was very specific about the privately."*
Ned looked at him.
At this man who had grown up knowing Catelyn — who had loved her in the way that the young love people who do not love them back, which was to say entirely and badly and in a way that had apparently not fully resolved itself even across the years and the marriages and the distance. At this man who was smiling with a smile that said he understood more about this situation than he was presenting and was enjoying the understanding.
*"Where is she?"*
Littlefinger's smile completed itself.
*"Follow me,"* he said.

The brothel was on the Street of Silk.
Ned walked behind Littlefinger through the narrow corridors of the establishment — past the doorways with their particular sounds and particular smells, past the women who acknowledged Littlefinger with the comfortable familiarity of people who know a regular patron and the more cautious assessment they reserved for unknown companions —
And into a back room.
Where Catelyn was waiting.

He saw her before she saw him — one second, perhaps two, in which he had the strange, displaced experience of seeing his wife in a place so entirely wrong for her that the wrongness was its own kind of information. She was sitting on the edge of a chair with the straight-backed composure of a woman who has been maintaining composure in unsuitable circumstances for long enough that the maintaining had become effortless.
She looked —
Tired. The specific tiredness of someone who has traveled hard and slept inadequately and been carrying something too heavy for the duration of both. But beneath the tiredness —
Herself.
Entirely, completely herself.
*"Ned."*
He crossed the room in three steps and she rose from the chair and he put his arms around her and she came into them with the completeness of a woman who has been doing things alone for too long and is temporarily, gratefully done with the alone.
He held her.
He breathed her in — the smell of the road still on her, beneath the other smells of the establishment, the specific her-ness of her that the road and the weeks and the distance had not altered.
*"Why are you here,"* he said, into her hair. *"What happened. Is it Bran —"*
*"Bran woke up,"* she said.
He pulled back.
He looked at her face.
He looked at what was in her eyes when she said it — the profound, exhausted, multi-layered relief of a woman who had been sitting beside an unconscious child for weeks and had received the thing she had been holding herself together in order to receive.
*"He woke up,"* he said.
*"Five days ago. He is — Ned, he is alive. He is himself. His legs —"* her voice caught slightly, then steadied *"— Luwin says the legs will not recover. He will not walk."*
Ned breathed.
He absorbed this.
The relief of the waking and the grief of the legs existing simultaneously in the same moment, the way all of Bran's situation had existed since the beginning — the gratitude that he lived and the sorrow of what living had cost him.
*"He woke,"* Ned said again.
As though the saying of it was itself something that needed to be done.
*"He woke,"* Catelyn confirmed.
A moment.
Then —
*"Ned. That's not why I came."*
He looked at her.
The tiredness in her face sharpened into something else — the specific, focused expression of a woman who has traveled five hundred miles to say something and is here now and is going to say it.
She reached into her traveling cloak.

A dagger.
Ned looked at it.
It was — beautiful, in the particular way that weapons made by masters were beautiful, the beauty of a thing made with complete skill for a complete purpose, nothing extraneous, nothing insufficient. The blade was Valyrian steel — he knew this immediately, the quality of it unmistakable, the rippling pattern in the metal that could not be imitated and could not be mistaken for anything else by anyone who had seen it before.

Not a weapon for a hired killer.
Not the knife of a man sent to do a simple job by someone who needed to spend as little as possible on the doing of it.
This was a weapon that cost more than most men earned in years. This was a weapon that had a history and a provenance and a previous owner who was not the man who had carried it into Bran's chamber.
*"Where did you get this,"* Ned said.
*"From the man who tried to kill Bran,"* Catelyn said.
The words arrived with the flat, precise impact of things that have been prepared for the journey and land exactly as intended.
Ned looked at her.
*"Tell me,"* he said.

All of it — the vigil, Robb's face in the doorway, Rickon's weeping in the corridor, the fire set to draw the household away, the man coming through the door with the blade in his hand. She told it plainly, the way she told things that had cost her something — without embellishment, without the dramatic narrative that other people might have constructed around these events, just the facts in the order they had occurred.
She held up her bandaged hands.
He looked at them.
He looked at the cuts across both palms — healing now, but deep, the kind of cuts that left scars, that left the permanent record of the moment in the skin of her hands.
She had grabbed the blade.
She had grabbed the blade with her bare hands to keep it away from her son.
He looked at her hands.
He looked at her face.
He thought about things that could not be said adequately in words.
*"The wolves,"* she continued. *"Summer and Shaggydog. They killed him."*

*"Good,"* he said again.
Catelyn looked at him.
Then she looked at the dagger.
*"I took it from his body. I wanted to know whose it was. Ned — it's Valyrian steel. The handle is dragonglass. This is not a weapon a hired man carries by chance."*
*"No,"* Ned said.
*"Someone gave it to him. Someone who owned it."*
*"Yes."*
*"So I asked."* She breathed. *"Carefully. Through Littlefinger — which I did not enjoy, but he knows the weapons of the realm the way he knows its finances, completely and always."*
She looked at the dagger.
*"He told me that dagger was wagered at the tourney before last. A joust — Jaime unhorsed the rider and the rider bet this dagger against his pride and lost."*
Ned looked at the blade.
*"Whose dagger was it,"* he said.
Catelyn looked at him.
Her blue eyes steady. Carrying what they were carrying with the steady, unflinching honesty of a woman who has come five hundred miles to deliver information she wishes did not exist.
*"Tyrion Lannister,"* she said.
The name.
Landing in the room between them.
Ned looked at the dagger.
He looked at it for a long time.
Valyrian steel. Dragonglass handle. Carried by a man sent to kill a sleeping ten-year-old boy in his bed. Wagered and lost by the youngest son of the most powerful man in the Seven Kingdoms.
Sent to kill a boy who had —
Who had been climbing.
Who had looked through a window.
Who had seen something he was not supposed to see.
The thread that had been pulling at him for weeks pulled now with the full, sudden weight of the thing attached to the other end of it.
*Bran fell.*
*Or Bran was pushed.*
*And what Bran saw was worth killing him for.*
*And the dagger belonged to a Lannister.*
Ned stood.
He moved to the window.
He looked at the Street of Silk below — the ordinary mid-morning traffic of a city going about its business, the people who were not kings or hands or players of games, who were buying bread and carrying water and arguing about prices and falling in love and living their lives with the blessed ignorance of people who were not in the middle of something.
He breathed.
He thought about Cersei's children.
He thought about the genealogy book.
He thought about the bastard boy on the Street of Steel with Robert's face.
He thought about Jon Arryn.
Dead.
He thought about Bran.
Fallen.
He thought about a dagger that had gone from Tyrion Lannister's ownership into the hands of a killer sent to silence a child.
He thought about the pattern.
The shape of it.
The Lannister shape of it.

Catelyn was watching him.
She was reading his face — she had always been able to read his face, had from the earliest days of their marriage developed the skill with the patient thoroughness of a woman who had decided to know her husband properly and had applied herself to the knowing until it was complete.
She was reading what was there.

*"They tried to kill our son,"* he said.
*"Yes."*
*"Because of what he saw."*
*"I believe so."*
*"And the same people —"* he stopped. *"Catelyn. Jon Arryn was looking at the same thing Bran saw. Jon Arryn is dead."*
The room was very quiet.
Catelyn sat very still.
*"Tell me,"* she said.
He told her.
Not all of it — not the full, specific, devastating conclusion that the genealogy book and the bastard boy and the Lannister children's golden hair had assembled for him in the nights of his investigation. But enough. The shape of it. The direction of it.
Enough for a woman of her intelligence to see where the shape was pointing.
She saw it.
He watched her see it.
He watched the specific quality of a mind arriving at an understanding it cannot unarrive at — the moment of comprehension that is also the moment of no-return, the knowledge that once known is owned permanently, that changes the shape of everything that comes after.
*"Gods,"* she said quietly.
Not an oath. A genuine, involuntary appeal to something larger than the moment.

He looked at the dagger.
*"I have a job to do,"* he said.

*"Robert needs to know. All of it. What Jon Arryn found. What Bran saw. What this dagger means."* He paused. *"He is the King. This is his kingdom and these are the people who are —"* he stopped himself from saying the word because the word was still the kind of word that, said
