Chapter 20 - The Fall of the Mango Tree

The storm arrived unexpectedly.

For three days, rain poured across the valley.

Thunder shook the hills.

Lightning illuminated the night sky.

The villagers welcomed the water after months of drought.

But on the third night, tragedy struck.

A bolt of lightning hit the ancient mango tree.

The tree that had witnessed nearly a century of family history.

The tree beneath which generations had gathered.

The tree that had become the symbol of their struggle.

The explosion echoed across the valley.

By morning, thousands had gathered around it.

A massive section of the trunk had split apart.

One of the great branches lay broken on the ground.

Many people wept openly.

Even Thandiwe struggled to contain her emotions.

For decades the tree had represented continuity.

Now it seemed vulnerable.

Mortal.

Just like the people whose stories it carried.

As villagers stood in silence, an elderly botanist examined the damage.

Finally he smiled.

"The tree is wounded."

People listened carefully.

"But it is not dead."

A murmur spread through the crowd.

The roots remained healthy.

The trunk still lived.

New growth was already possible.

That afternoon, something remarkable happened.

Children collected mango seeds from beneath the tree.

Families planted them throughout the valley.

Schools planted them.

Churches planted them.

Farmers planted them.

Hundreds of new mango trees took root.

The old tree had nearly fallen.

But its legacy was multiplying.

And in that moment, the community understood something important.

Their strength had never truly come from the tree itself.

It came from the people who gathered beneath it.
