Chapter 107: A City Beneath the Sun

For the first time since arriving in Solaryn

Kael was given an entire day with no assignments. No training.

No missions.No evaluations.

At first, he didn't know what to do with himself.

The realization was almost embarrassing.

Most people dreamed of free time.

Kael had forgotten how to use it.

So he did the only thing that felt natural.

He walked.The Heart of Solaryn

The capital felt different during the day.

Not because it was quieter.

Because it was alive.

The markets were overflowing.

Vendors shouted from colorful stalls.

Children chased each other through crowded streets.Musicians played near fountains built centuries ago.

The smell of bread, roasted meats, spices, and fresh fruit drifted through the air.

People smiled here.Argued here.Laughed here.Life wasn't waiting for heroes.

It continued regardless of them.

Kael found himself watching people more than the city itself.A father teaching his daughter how to carve wood.

An elderly woman bargaining aggressively with a merchant half her age.

A group of young recruits pretending to be members of the King's Guard.

One of them was clearly pretending to be Kaelen.

The child folded his arms dramatically.

"Only results matter."The others groaned.

Kael laughed before he could stop himself.

The children immediately froze. Then recognized him and panicked.

The Weight of Reputation.By now

People knew who he was.

Not everyone.But enough.

The young recruits stared at him.

Wide-eyed."You're Kael."Not a question.

A statement.

Kael suddenly understood why King Godfrey disliked public attention. It was awkward.

Very awkward. One of the children stepped forward."Did you really fight a Devourer Lord?"Kael paused. Then answered honestly.

"Yes."Another child immediately spoke.

"Were you scared?"That answer came much faster."Terrified."The children blinked.

Clearly expecting something more heroic.

Kael smiled."Anyone who says they aren't afraid is either lying or doesn't understand what they're facing."The children seemed to consider that seriously.

Before immediately returning to pretending they were legendary warriors.Kael quietly escaped.Politics Beneath the Surface

Later that afternoon he found himself in one of Solaryn's central plazas.A crowd had gathered around several speakers.

Not entertainers.Politicians.And they were arguing.Passionately.A man wearing noble colors slammed his fist against a podium.

"The Crown cannot continue centralizing military authority!"Boos.Cheers.Arguments.

Another speaker immediately countered.

"And what would you suggest instead?"

"Giving power to the provinces!"

More shouting.Kael listened quietly.

Because this was something he had never considered.Politics wasn't simply kings and nobles. It affected everyone.Farmers.

Merchants.Soldiers.Citizens.

Especially now.Because the Devourer threat was growing. And fear made people choose sides. The Expanding World

That evening,Kael joined King Godfrey for dinner. Not because the King demanded it.

Because the King enjoyed conversation.

And surprisingly—Kael had become interesting."Tell me," Godfrey said.

"What do you think of Solaryn?"

Kael thought for a moment."It's bigger than I expected."The King laughed.

"That's everyone's first answer."A pause.

"And their second?"Godfrey looked out a nearby window."They realize how small they are."That answer lingered.

Because Kael understood exactly what he meant.

The Future Expands

Later in the conversation

The King revealed something unexpected.

"The story isn't ending with the Devourer Lords."Kael frowned.

"What do you mean?"Godfrey smiled.

A knowing smile."The world is older than our problems."A pause.

"And far larger."He tapped a map.

Not of Eryndor. Not even of Aetheris.

A map of the known world.

Several continents stretched beyond the sea.

Entire civilizations.Empires.Kingdoms.

Unexplored territories.Ancient ruins.

Unknown lands.Kael stared.

The world suddenly felt impossibly large.

Godfrey smiled."Good."

Because that was exactly the reaction he wanted.Meanwhile...Far from Solaryn

Bram and the others were returning home.

Victorious.Stronger.

And perhaps more importantly closer.

The journey back was slower than usual.

Not because they were tired.

Because they enjoyed each other's company.A realization none of them were comfortable admitting.Especially Nyra.

Nyra's RealizationShe noticed it first.

Not during battle.Not during training.

Not during danger.During silence.

The dangerous kind. The kind that allowed thoughts to exist. Her gaze kept drifting toward Tovin. And every time she caught herself—She became annoyed.

Which only made it worse.Tovin eventually noticed.Of course he did.He noticed everything."You're staring."

Nyra immediately looked away.

"I wasn't.""You were.""I wasn't."

"You absolutely were."Lira nearly choked trying not to laugh.Bram openly laughed.

Nyra looked ready to murder all of them.

Lira's Observation,that night

As everyone settled around campfires

Lira found herself watching Bram.

Not romantically.Not yet.

But differently.

The way someone begins seeing a person instead of simply a teammate.

Bram had changed.Grown.

Become something dependable.

And she wasn't the only one who noticed.

The group was changing. Not just in strength.

In connection. They were becoming a family.

Slowly.Naturally.Without realizing it.

A New Direction

Back in Solaryn

Kael stood atop the palace walls.

Watching the city below.

Watching the world beyond.

For the first time

He wasn't wondering how strong he needed to become.

He was wondering where this journey would take him.

Because perhaps

The Devourer Lords weren't the end.

Perhaps they were only the beginning.
