When they entered the mansion, the doors closed behind them with a quiet finality.
The air inside felt different.
Heavier.
Measured.
The elegant maid guided them through polished corridors lined with oil paintings and silver-framed mirrors.
"Elara's room is this way," she said gently before turning to Kael. "I'll show you yours."
Lyra remained asleep on his back.
"Would you prefer separate rooms," the maid asked, "or one room?"
"Separate," Kael replied calmly. "But for now, I'll stay with her."
Her eyes flickered briefly toward Lyra.
"As you wish."
They continued walking.
"I didn't catch your name earlier," Kael said.
She smiled warmly.
"Elizabeth."
"Eliza, then."
"It's Elizabeth," she corrected lightly. "But I assume you won't change your mind."
"You're quick on the uptake. I like that."
She gave a soft, amused sigh and stopped before a door.
"This will be your room."
Kael paused at the entrance.
"Well then… I'm Kael. I'll be seeing you around, Eliza."
He entered before she could object.
"This child…" she murmured quietly.
Then her gaze sharpened slightly.
"I see now why our lady is interested in them."
She turned and disappeared down the corridor.
Inside the Room
Kael placed Lyra gently on the bed.
For a moment, he simply sat beside her.
Watching.
Making sure her breathing remained steady.
Then he stood and stepped back into the corridor—
Only to nearly collide with someone walking briskly past.
Seris.
She froze for a split second upon seeing him.
Then her eyes flicked down the hallway behind her.
Someone was there.
Following.
Her expression tightened.
Without a word, she grabbed his sleeve and pushed him back inside the room, closing the door behind them.
Silence filled the space.
She exhaled slowly.
They stared at each other for several seconds.
"Sorry about that," she said quietly.
"It's fine," Kael replied. "Though I'm curious why you were rushing through your own house."
She hesitated.
"Well… one thing led to another."
He studied her face briefly.
She's hiding something.
But he looked away.
No need to pry.
"You're Seris, right?"
Her eyes sharpened.
"You know about me?"
"Since the market."
She glanced toward Lyra on the bed.
"I see. That explains your behavior back then."
"It's not like knowing who you were would have changed anything," he replied lightly.
She studied him.
"You met me without any formality."
"Should I have?"
"Most people do."
He shrugged.
"So," he continued, "did you have something to tell me?"
She tilted her head slightly.
"Why would you think that?"
"You came this direction right after hearing we arrived. You told Eliza to follow you. And someone was clearly trailing you."
He met her gaze directly.
"So I assumed you wanted to confirm something."
A slow smile formed on her lips.
"You're quite analytical."
"And?"
She folded her hands together.
"I wanted to confirm what everyone else is curious about."
"And that is?"
She looked him up and down once.
"Are you male… or female?"
He didn't hesitate.
He smiled.
"I'll be here for a while," he said calmly. "You're free to find out."
Her smile widened slightly.
"In that case, you'll have to spend more time with me."
"I think I can manage that."
She walked toward the door.
"Let's meet again…"
"Kael."
"Kael…" she repeated softly.
Then she left.
The Summons
Moments later, there was a knock.
Kael opened the door to find Elizabeth standing there.
"My master is requesting your presence."
Her gaze shifted slightly.
"Is your sister awake?"
"No."
He stepped out and closed the door behind him.
"What does he want from me?" Kael asked as they walked.
"Do you believe you were invited here for nothing?" Elizabeth replied calmly.
"Fair point."
They passed through a series of long corridors before entering a large living chamber.
The room was vast, with high ceilings and tall windows that allowed golden light to spill across polished marble floors.
Three figures were already seated.
At the center sat Vaelor.
Composed.
Smiling faintly.
Eyes that felt older than the room itself.
To his right stood Orin, silent and observant.
And to the left, seated with quiet elegance, was Seris.
Kael's gaze swept across them calmly.
So these are the Daincrests…
He walked forward and took a seat without hesitation.
The room felt still.
Measured.
Like the beginning of a game neither side intended to lose.
This chapter does something important:
Introduces social tension
Builds Seris–Kael chemistry
Establishes Vaelor's authority
Places Orin in silent observer mode
Shows Elizabeth is perceptive
Now the next chapter will be pivotal.
The first conversation between Kael and Vaelor must feel like:
Two people speaking politely…
While measuring how dangerous the other truly is.
