Skyler sat outside the emergency room, his knee bouncing in a restless rhythm as he stared at the bright red light above the operating room door. The sign had been glowing for almost forty minutes now, and it hadn't changed once. It just hung there, a small, indifferent beacon in the quiet corridor.
One of the crew members had called the woman's emergency contact and told Skyler not to worry, that he could go, that someone else would handle it from here. But Skyler had refused. He didn't know why.
The woman was a stranger he had carried her out of the rooftop because it was the right thing to do, because she was bleeding and scared and someone needed to help her. But he could have handed her to the paramedics and walked away. He could have gone back to Salvar, back to his actual job, back to the person he was hired to protect.
Instead, he was sitting on a hard metal bench in a hospital corridor, waiting for news about a woman whose name he didn't even know.
