"If you come in quietly, we won't have to hurt you."

The tallest of them stepped forth, dragging a morning star behind him. He had no brows and was somehow balder than Uncle John himself. His size and stature should have been threatening, but perhaps facing heroic spirits had desensitized me to that sort of thing.

"Wait," I tilted my head. "You suspect I have the Ten Shadows, and you're still confident in taking me in? That feels insulting."

"The Ten Shadows are gone. No one believes it-"

"Then, what's the point?"

"It is not our place to question the Clan Head. You will come with us, be it willingly, or by force."

I closed my eyes. "Is that so?"

"Enji-kun, you should escape while I hold them off-"

I heard the snap of a string, and the whistle of the air that told me something had been shot my way. I did not even need to open my eyes to grab it out of the air the moment it closed in. An arrow. Someone seriously shot an arrow at me.

When I opened my eyes, one of them was on me with a massive axe raised overhead. The arrow in my hand exploded in a cloud of dust. The axe never managed to reach me. Bazett stepped in beside me with her fist reeled back. The air snapped as her fist met the man's guts. He flew back far faster than he'd rushed in. His back hit the reinforced glass, then the glass shattered under his weight and momentum.

The blow dragged him across the asphalt road before he finally stopped, sprawled under a stormy sky as rain poured down from overhead.

Thunder roared as Bazett fixed her gloves.

"I expected more resilience."

I waved my hand dissipating the smoke from the arrow. The men stood across from us quickly realised that Bazett was a significant threat and detached in two groups.

Three for the Clock Tower Enforcer.

Two for me.

I'd come here to jump someone, and been jumped instead.

I stared at the two men approaching me. One of them broke into a sprint and sliced at me with his sword. I waited until the last moment, then abruptly bit down on his steel. My sharp teeth felt no resistance whatsoever. He watched the blade shatter like the glass window with widening eyes.

Impressively enough, he regained his bearings in an instant and pulled out a tag from his gi. He straight up slapped me in the face with his other hand, pasting the piece of paper on my face. I was so taken aback by the sheer audacity that I faltered for a moment. The etchings began to glow, and then the tag exploded in a shower of golden lightning.

I was flung aside, right into a pillar. Uncle John broke my momentum with his own body. His back hit the thick pillar instead of me. He let out a pained groan.

"Fuck you."

I stabbed a hand into the air. Purple lightning arched from my fingertips. It tore through the distance in less than the blink of an eye and struck the man flat in the chest, burning through his clothes and searing his chest. I followed soon after. He tried to move away but his own shadows reached out to hold him in place until my claws were wrapped around his face.

"You actually slapped me."

His partner threw his sickle at me. My shadow reached up and hardened to form a sword. Steel met shadows. Sparks flew into the air. I grabbed the chain and yanked him towards me. Just then, from the corner of my eye, I saw one of them about to hit Bazett from the back and kicked the shitstain at him.

The one in my hand tried to punch and cut at me. He didn't accomplish much. My arms were much longer than his. He let out a muffled scream as my grip tightened. His eyes bulged out. The scream became a choked gasp for air.

"Should've taken a closer look."

I let him go... only to pierce my hand right through his chest. Pulling my hand free, I shook off the blood with a sigh.

Where I only made a tiny mess, I expected Bazett to make actual craters with their bodies. Only, she'd been surprisingly clean in her neutralisation of the perceived threats. My confusion lingered only for a moment.

She was an Enforcer. We were in a public place.

There were six bodies. I doubted the people around us would take kindly to them when the bounded field dissipated.

I turned to Bazett for an answer.

"I've already replaced theirs with one of my own, but we still need to do something about the evidence."

Fixing her tie, the Enforcer scanned her ruined surroundings. The glass wall was lying all over the pavement outside, two of the pillars had craters in them, the reception table was utterly beaten up courtesy of the giant man I'd lopped at it.

"Fortunately, this nation is plagued by frequent earthquakes. The memory alteration will be easy." She nudged the dead man lying at her feet with the tip of her shoe, "The bodies still need to be dealt with, however."

Uncle John was... still standing there. His lips were parted, and shock was apparent in his gaze. He was only barely clutching the sword he'd drawn earlier. A sword that saw no action whatsoever.

Our assailants were pure bums... only of them slapped me.

I doubted I'd forget that soon.

Shaking my head, I pushed aside the embarrassment and called out the Great Serpent. Brutal as it was, the massive snake made terribly short work of the 'food' his master had hunted. It swallowed the corpses in one swoop, and the strong acids or poisons in its digestive tract dissolved them in a matter of seconds.

Then, the serpent slithered over to my foot, and though his head was nearly as large as my whole body, he flicked his tongue against the back of my head before being swallowed up by my shadow.

"That was-"

"Efficient." Bazett said calmly.

Suddenly, Uncle John fell to one knee and bowed his head to me with closed eyes. His entire body was trembling. The storm outside made Bazett's hair sway uncontrollably when we looked to each other for an answer.

"I acknowledge you as the master of the Zen'in."

"What?"

"The proof is before me. Any who adhere to the Founder's values will do the same. The Ten Shadows have been the pedigree of the family head since time immemorial. Tell me, Enji-ku... No, Enji-sama, what are your orders?"

...

...

I found myself at a loss for words. Bazett noticed. She awkwardly nudged me with her elbow. After all, she too sucked as much as I did at this kind of thing.

"Then, keep attention off me till I come for my ancestor's manuscripts. I doubt everyone's going to be as happy to hear this as you are."

If I knew magi, then one of them would definitely decide to take the Ten Shadows from me. There was a non-zero chance that it was possible too, since it was a matter of bloodline, and we all shared the same one.

"You speak the truth. I shall do my utmost."

"And... keep my sister safe."

I didn't know where that came from.

His gaze warmed, and his shoulders relaxed. The trembling finally stopped.

"Yes, Enji-sama."

I took another look at the lobby, running a hand through my hair.

"Is your name really John?"

"No, it's-"

-

Hope u enjoyed.

Plz, comment.

Bro's been fighting servants so long even I forgot he's actually pretty strong by normal standards. Still a bum, tho, bro thinks flexing on jobbers makes him look cool when he just got done running away from Berserker.
