Chapter 46 - CHAPTER 46 — THE EYE OPENS

The projection above Soren shifted.

Not slowly.

Not gently.

Not in a "this is normal magical behaviour" way.

But violently — like something inside the swirling red‑and‑white energy was pushing outward.

Soren screamed. "NO. NO. STOP. I DON'T WANT ANYTHING TO PUSH OUTWARD. PUSHING OUTWARD IS BAD."

Kael stepped closer. "Soren, breathe."

"I CAN'T. I'M TOO BUSY PANICKING."

Aldric muttered, "As usual."

Soren threw a crystal at him. "SHUT UP."

Lira grabbed Soren's hand. "We're here. You're okay."

"I'M NOT OKAY. I'M GLOWING AND HAUNTED AND POSSIBLY POSSESSED."

The fox chirped anxiously, pressing its head to Soren's cheek.

The symbol on Soren's chest pulsed again.

The projection flickered.

And then—

The eye opened.

The Eye That Should Not Exist

It wasn't a normal eye.

Not human.

Not beast.

Not anything Soren had ever seen.

It was a swirling mass of red and white light, shaped vaguely like an iris, with a pupil that wasn't a pupil — more like a hole in reality.

Soren screamed. "NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. WHY IS THERE AN EYE. WHY IS IT LOOKING AT ME. WHY DOES IT LOOK JUDGMENTAL."

Kael's jaw tightened. "It's aware."

Lira whispered, "It's watching him."

Aldric muttered, "Of course it is."

Soren pointed at the projection. "STOP WATCHING ME. I'M NOT INTERESTING. I'M NOT SPECIAL. I'M NOT—"

The eye pulsed.

Soren froze.

The fox growled — a low, rumbling sound Soren had never heard before.

Seraphine stepped forward. "Arcturus… this is worse than we thought."

Veylan nodded. "It's sentient."

Soren screamed. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN SENTIENT. I DON'T WANT SENTIENT. I WANT DORMANT. I WANT ASLEEP. I WANT DEAD."

Arcturus's voice was calm. Too calm. "Vale. What is it saying now."

Soren swallowed. "Nothing."

The eye pulsed again.

Soren corrected himself. "Okay, it's saying something."

Kael asked, "What."

Soren whispered:

"He said… 'I see you.'"

The Panic Spiral Intensifies

Soren screamed. "NO. NO YOU DON'T. STOP SEEING ME. I'M NOT HERE. I'M A FIGMENT. I'M AN ILLUSION. I'M—"

Kael grabbed his shoulders. "Soren. Focus."

"I CAN'T FOCUS. I'M BEING EYEBALLED BY A COSMIC NIGHTMARE."

Lira squeezed his hand. "You're safe."

"I'M NOT SAFE. I'M A WALKING MAGICAL TARGET."

Aldric shrugged. "He's not wrong."

Soren threw another crystal at him. "STOP TALKING."

The fox hopped onto Soren's shoulder, tails glowing fiercely.

The eye pulsed again — brighter this time.

The crystals around the platform dimmed.

The runes flickered.

Seraphine gasped. "It's draining the resonance field."

Veylan snarled. "It's testing the boundaries."

Soren screamed. "BOUNDARIES?! IT HAS BOUNDARIES?! WHY DOES IT HAVE BOUNDARIES. WHY DOES IT HAVE NEEDS. WHY DOES IT HAVE A PERSONALITY."

Arcturus stepped forward. "Vale. Tell us exactly what you feel."

Soren clutched his chest. "I feel… pulled."

Kael's eyes sharpened. "Pulled how."

"Like… like it wants me to go somewhere."

Lira whispered, "Where?"

Soren shook his head violently. "I DON'T KNOW. AND I DON'T WANT TO KNOW."

The Eye Speaks Again

The projection flickered.

The eye widened.

And a voice echoed through Soren's mind.

Not loud.

Not shouting.

But deep — like roots cracking through stone.

"Come."

Soren screamed. "NO. I'M NOT COMING ANYWHERE. I'M STAYING HERE. I'M STAYING IN MY DORM. I'M STAYING ALIVE."

The voice continued.

"Come."

"NO."

"Come."

"NO."

"COME."

Soren grabbed Kael's arm. "MAKE IT STOP."

Kael held him steady. "We're here."

Lira pressed her hand to his back. "You're not alone."

Aldric cracked his knuckles. "Tell it to fight me."

Soren screamed. "I'M NOT TELLING IT ANYTHING."

The fox leapt onto Soren's chest, tails flaring with blinding light.

The projection shattered.

The eye vanished.

The runes stabilised.

The crystals brightened.

Silence.

The Aftermath

Soren collapsed onto the platform. "I hate this place."

The fox curled against him, chirping softly.

Kael knelt beside him. "You did well."

"I DID NOT."

"You did."

"I DIDN'T."

"You did."

Aldric muttered, "Both of you stop."

Lira brushed Soren's hair back gently. "It's over."

Soren stared at her. "NO IT'S NOT. IT'S NEVER OVER. IT'S GETTING WORSE. IT HAS AN EYE NOW. AN EYE. WHY DOES IT HAVE AN EYE."

Arcturus stepped forward. "Vale."

Soren squeaked. "Yes?"

Arcturus's expression was grim. "This confirms it."

Soren swallowed. "Confirms what."

Arcturus answered:

"You are no longer hosting just the core."

Soren blinked. "What else am I hosting."

Arcturus said quietly:

"Something inside it."

Soren fainted.

Again.

Kael caught him.

Again.

Aldric rolled his eyes. "Pathetic."

Lira sighed. "Expected."

The fox curled up on Soren's chest and chirped.

And the entire Hall of Resonance watched the boy who accidentally became the vessel for something far older — and far more aware — than a corrupted forest core.
