The girl in black introduced the situation of Slaughter City to Gu Xuan and Dugu Yan, while the two of them raised questions from time to time.
To be honest, Slaughter City was not as evil as imagined; at least for now, it seemed quite humane. Although most people who came here were fugitives or even the most heinous criminals, everyone was treated equally here. Of course, this was likely the method that the deity used to maintain the inheritance.
As they were walking, a figure suddenly stood up from a dark corner. Gu Xuan and Dugu Yan hadn't even noticed him before. It was as if he appeared out of thin air; even Gu Xuan had once thought it was a corpse.
"Oh, newcomers. It looks like there will be new Bloody Marys again, jie jie jie."
A raspy voice drifted over. Gu Xuan scanned the man, and both he and Dugu Yan couldn't help but frown. It was impossible to tell the man's age because his physique was so peculiar. He had almost no flesh on his body; if it weren't for the layer of skin wrapping him, one might easily mistake him for a skeleton.
Through simple observation, Gu Xuan could clearly feel that this person wasn't like this because of some special cultivation technique; his qi and blood were both depleted, and he could die at any moment.
Ignoring the man, Gu Xuan turned to the girl in black and asked, "Can someone like him also pass a battle in the Hell Slaughter Arena once a year?"
The skeletal man only then noticed the girl in black on the other side of Gu Xuan and Dugu Yan. As if encountering something terrifying, he didn't dare say another word and quickly vanished back into the darkness.
The girl in black replied, "Of course not. Not everyone needs to undergo the baptism of the Hell Slaughter Arena."
"After all, the death rate there is too high. Besides surviving a battle in the Hell Slaughter Arena every year, there is another way to survive in Slaughter City, and that is to contribute two cups of Bloody Mary every month."
Gu Xuan knew that the so-called Bloody Mary was human blood. Recalling the girl's words, he couldn't help but glance at the darkness where the skeletal man had vanished. From the looks of it, that man must have contributed so much blood to end up like that; he likely wouldn't last much longer.
"If one contributes too much Bloody Mary, won't they be at the mercy of others?" Dugu Yan asked with a frown.
The girl in black replied, "No. Where you are now is the Outer City of Slaughter City, not the true Slaughter City. Only the Inner City is a place truly without rules. Those who contribute Bloody Mary to linger on can only move within the Outer City, where random killing is not permitted."
"Only warriors who survive the Hell Slaughter Arena have the right to live in the Inner City. Of course, the enjoyment one can find there is far greater than outside—things many people won't experience in their entire lives—but it also comes with the test of death at any moment."
"So, Slaughter City is entirely another world. Then, what is the source of food here? In a place like this, I doubt anything can be grown, nor would anyone try," Gu Xuan said, his gaze remaining on the girl in black.
Actually, Gu Xuan had this question when reading the original story. With so many people in Slaughter City, they couldn't possibly rely solely on drinking human blood to survive. Furthermore, Gu Xuan had observed carefully; this place wasn't suitable for the growth of any plants. He really wanted to know what the food source was.
Hearing this question, the girl's expression changed slightly as she said, "I am sorry, I do not know the answer to that and cannot answer you."
Although he didn't get an answer, Gu Xuan didn't press further. He and Dugu Yan had brought enough dry food and water in their soul tools to last two or three years.
Gu Xuan suddenly thought of an interesting question and asked calmly, "Does Spirit Hall know of this place's existence? If they do, why don't they, who always claim to be righteous, come to wipe this place out?"
Gu Xuan's question was blunt, but it held deep meaning. Although Slaughter City was an isolated underground world, since they knew about it and there were so many people in the tavern outside when they arrived, it meant the outside world wasn't ignorant of this place.
Hearing Gu Xuan's words, the girl in black let out a cold laugh and replied, "What if they know? Spirit Hall won't take action against us. Leaving aside whether they could gain any benefits in this world, destroying Slaughter City offers them no advantage at all."
"Gentleman Number 9527, please do not forget that it is nearly impossible for people who enter Slaughter City to leave. Those who come here are humans filled with depravity and sin, and this place has no connection to the outside world."
"Slaughter City is like a special prison, helping Spirit Hall keep watch over the most heinous criminals. Tell me, why would Spirit Hall destroy this place? They likely wish for even more evil people to come here."
Listening to the girl in black, Gu Xuan's understanding of this place became clearer. It had to be said that the existence of Slaughter City was quite ingenious. With this so-called haven for bad people, the villains of the continent wouldn't be forced into a desperate gamble because, in their hearts, they still had a way out.
Walking along the road, the people on both sides gradually increased in number. Almost everyone's face showed an unhealthy pallor, and many were skin and bones. Needless to say, these were the people who didn't dare enter the Hell Slaughter Arena and chose to linger on by contributing two cups of Bloody Mary every month.
Gu Xuan remembered that a single cup should be nearly half a catty; two cups a month meant one catty of fresh blood. A month or two might be fine, but doing this continuously in a place without sunlight, how could the body possibly take it?
While walking, Gu Xuan observed that in the Outer City, the streets were lined with simple black stone houses. Only after a certain distance would there be designated places to eat, where many people lined up waiting for food distribution. From the looks of it, these people were only slightly better off than beggars. As for the so-called paradise of sin...
From the looks of these people, the so-called pleasure didn't exist at all. To this, the girl in black gave a very simple explanation.
"Evil people are also divided into different ranks. Only truly powerful villains can enjoy themselves in this paradise of depravity."
"As for useless trash, they are just rats in a sewer, no matter where they go, and have no right to enjoy these things."
This 'city' was larger than Gu Xuan had imagined. After walking for more than an hour and gaining some understanding of the Outer City, the girl in black led them to a city wall.
This was the Inner City of Slaughter City. Compared to the outer wall of Slaughter City, this wall wasn't high, reaching only about ten meters at its peak.
Arriving here, the girl in black said, "Gentleman Number 9527, this is the end of the Outer City. Entering further... will be the Inner City."
Gu Xuan glanced at the girl in black and then said calmly, "Then take us in."
