Chapter 79 - Thirty Minutes

"Xander. You have thirty minutes."

Chawng didn't raise his voice. He stood at the iron gate, hands behind his back.

Xander was already moving.

The chalk X at the center was empty. Luna sat at its edge with Elara's hand on her shoulder, the weed root still alive beside her boot. Drake's furrow cut across the oil groove. Kara's river stone sat clear on the middle tripod. Frost smoked low over the stones.

Finch looked up from his wax slate. "Designation?"

"Seven-Gamma," Xander said. He didn't step to the X.

His thumbs twitched once against his thighs. Then he shoved both fists into his pockets and the twitch stopped.

On the balcony, Mirell leaned to the rail beside Calder. She expected a vortex. Calder had his ledger open, pen ready for a radius number. The Senior Logician Orderly checked his dampener slate. Proctor Miller kept the students behind the outer line. Vance stood with his logistics board, Toby beside him with his Ward 4 witness ribbon pinned crooked. Dr. Aris watched Finch instead of Xander.

Finch lifted his stylus. "Phase one. Sustained vortex protocol."

Xander shook his head. He wasn't looking at Finch. He was looking at the ground.

"You never reset the room," he said.

Mirell frowned. "Explain."

"This room's not clean," he said.

He crouched by the oil groove. He didn't touch it. He held his hand a breath above it and dust lifted in a thin line, then settled west toward Drake's furrow.

"See that? It still pulls that way. From his shield."

He stood, moved two steps to where Kara had stood. He didn't say temperature. He just pulled his sleeves down a little.

"It's colder here. Still."

One more step to where Luna had closed her hands.

"And the air's still moving from her test. You can feel it if you stand here."

He looked up at the balcony.

"You're measuring me inside their mess."

For a second no one said anything. Dust hung in the still line he had found.

Finch wrote.

"Environmental variance noted."

Mirell cut in, flat and final. "The Board does not debate metrics."

Xander looked at her. Not challenging. Just tired of being measured wrong.

"I'm not debating them," he said. "I'm reading them."

Finch's stylus didn't move. Mirell held his gaze a beat longer, then looked away first.

Xander pulled his right hand from his pocket. Between thumb and forefinger was the small brass spacer from the maintenance column, edge filed flat. Along its rim, tiny gear tooth punctures Toby would recognize as numbers. He set it on the edge of Finch's wax slate, not as a trick, as something to hold the place where the wax was still soft.

"Can I ask something?" he said, loud enough for the balcony to hear.

Mirell didn't answer. He asked it anyway.

"Representative Mirell. Can Luna grow vines from stone?"

Silence from above.

"No," Mirell said.

"Can she heal someone who isn't hurt?"

No answer this time. Finch waited. Elara's hand tightened on Luna's shoulder.

Xander looked around the courtyard. At the dead stone raked flat for Drake. At the oil that had been left still for Kara. At the empty X where Luna had closed her hands over nothing.

"Then what exactly did you measure?"

Toby swallowed. Vance stopped writing mid line.

Finch lifted his stylus and wrote the only thing that was true without adding anything that was not.

"Incomplete due to condition."

Three words. Cold.

Mirell's jaw tightened. "That entry was utility undetermined."

Finch didn't look up.

"Amended."

Calder closed his ledger with a soft snap.

His eyes moved from Drake's furrow to Kara's clear stone to the untouched weed root beside Luna's boot.

He said nothing.

Xander walked back to the middle tripod and picked up Kara's river stone. It was clear all the way through.

He turned it over once in his hand.

"If this was heat," he said, almost to himself, "it would be cold."

He set it back down. Looked at Finch.

"You need to clear the room before you test me," he said. "This test is already dirty."

The Senior Logician Orderly opened his mouth, then checked his slate. He had to tell the truth.

"Residuals present."

Finch wrote again.

"Rezero required."

That was it. No paragraph. He felt like a printer again.

Mirell stepped back from the rail. She didn't argue point by point anymore. She had been made to look, and once was enough for someone like her to know the inspection would not dry clean.

Xander stepped finally onto the chalk X. He didn't raise wind. Dust around his boots hung in that thin, perfect thread between Drake's pull and Kara's cold, held still by nothing more than balance.

His hands were back in his pockets. His thumbs were still.

He wasn't calculating.

He was perceiving.

Finch's stylus hovered over the wax. The brass spacer gleamed beside his hand, punctures catching light. The ledger was still open. Ink not dry.

Xander waited in the quiet room he had found inside everyone else's noise.
